Plastic bowls, breakfast on 6" side plates. Understaffed badly managed, kids playing football in the corridors. No managers available after 5pm or during the weekends or over holiday periods.
Don't go there.

Gran Hotel Turquesa Playa was the place we spent our honeymoon in. We spent there 13 nights and we had All inclusice -service.

The hotel was big and it wasn't crowded at the time we were there. Basically there were retired people and us. So if you want to party hard, don't go to this hotel :)

The food was good and the service great except the cleaning ladies. They didn't speak english at all and they refused to wash our laundry though the hotel had a laundry service.

We have stayed here previously, and for the past 3 visits we have said that we must find another hotel in PDLC that meets our needs. However after this visit, it will be our last, The hotel has gone downhill very quickly.
We had 3 night half board on a recent touring holiday.

There are some pros for staying here:-

Always find somewhere to park ( for free) on the streets nearby.
15 / 20 mins stroll into town – relatively on the level
5 mins stroll to the bus station
10 mins to Loro Parque

However the cons now outweigh them:-

No free wifi, and wifi not available throughout hotel. ( This is 2013 !)
Parking at hotel 18euros a day!! Yes you did read that right 18 euros a day
Pay for the safe in the room
Pay for sauna – and it isn’t a mixed one – luckily we realised before we paid – I do not want to sit in a sauna in the female changing room, whilst my OH sits in one in the male changing room.
Rooms are now very old, tired and dated. The TV ( no English channel) is a old 14” portable.
The electric lock on the door kept being faulty, which meant the door could be opened with very little force! It was mended once by a maintenance man, but soon broke again, and we had to figure out how to fix it ourselves.
Food – has really gone downhill, tasteless, overcooked and not the same variety as used to be.
The hotel is part of the subsided holidays for Spanish pensioners scheme and these seem to be quite a chunk of the clientele, beware their elbows are sharp at the scrum at breakfast time J
The hotel caters more for the elderly, retired person, with English clientele being in the minority – not that, that bothers me. It may bother some.
They seem to be trading on previous good name – the holiday certificates so proudly displayed in reception finish in 2008, if I remember right.

We arrived here from Santa Cruz, where we enjoyed free underground parking, free wifi throughout hotel and a large flat screen TV with 2 English new channels and contemporary furnishings, and a fantastic wetroom.

We will return to PDLC as we enjoy the town and winter sun, but not again at this hotel.

Room Tip: Room on top floors, sea view

Ok second year without any kids, and the wife and I’s continuing search for a reasonable (around £1000) A/I week/10 day break in November.
Portugal last year was lovely through the day but alas just not warm enough in the evening to sit outside, and this time of year evenings can be long.
By travelling down to Tenerife we had a good additional hour of daylight + a lot milder evening temperatures, see weather.

We paid £1152 for the 2 of us for 10 days at the Gran Turquesa Playa hotel in a 2 room apartment, staying all inclusive. This excluded airport parking and insurance, but did include 20kg hold baggage each. As the airport transfer was going to cost £60 we decided to hire a car for our full stay at £125. We used Goldcar who charged us 85eu’s for a full tank of fuel when we picked the car up and another 500eu’s returnable deposit. However we could take the car back with no fuel. With hindsight it would have been cheaper to pay a little more and have to fill the tank before we returned it. Fuel is cheaper than the uk at just over 1 eu per litre.

Food
Having stayed at several 3/4* hotels we considered the food and dinning arrangements here above average to what we’ve experienced elsewhere. However, we did think the snacks available outside meal times not very good.
For breakfast, a choice of cooked to order fried eggs, as well as boiled/scrambled eggs, and bacon + cereals, pastries, yoghurt, honey and a selection of cold meats breads and jams. Unlimited Coffee and several types of Tea were also available. The orange and pineapple juice’s from a machine weren’t fresh but were still ok.
Lunch and dinner were very similar with soup, at least 2 of each meat/fish/vegetarian dishes and loads of fresh salad. The vegetables available were cooked within an inch of their lives mind. We thought the salad bar, and particularly the sweet selection good, with at least 5/6 different very sweet deserts to choose from.
You were trusted to seat yourself and on entry to the dining room given a voucher for either a bottle of very mediocre wine or quite a nice cold beer (each, not per-table). Wine/water was also available on tap. The 6 or so different fresh fruits available at each meal time were neither bruised nor overripe during our stay.

Bar/Entertainment
Drinks tasted the same as previous A/I’s - no weaker/stronger. But not being regular spirit drinkers we can’t comment on quality. The bar people usually managed to keep up – unless someone had a large order. The entertainment in our opinion was really poor. The only entertainment we saw were 3 guitar playing singers who were singing in Spanish. To be fair the Spanish majority of residents did seem to think they were great. We don’t usually sit inside by choice, we prefer to sit outside and talk with others most nights. Probably our only disappointment with the Turquesa Playa was the very few people from the UK staying there. We only met 2 other English speaking couples, both of which were Spanish residents taking advantage of the Spanish governments assisted pensioner holiday scheme.

Accommodation
We felt the apartment was comfortable but not 4* more akin to an average 3*. Consisting of a twin bedded room and a self-catering kitchen/living area complete with a washing machine, but no kettle? A single largish balcony was accessible through sliding doors from both rooms. We had no issues with the huge twin beds, which were if anything rather on the soft side for us. A modern TV with more than the usual 3 English language programs should be standard fair in a 4* hotel. Although WiFi was available free between 1 & 3 in the reception area. The paid for service that should have been available in our apt was so weak it was almost unusable. Again WiFi should be standard fair in a 4* Hotel. Furniture and fittings were adequate but rather tired. The thing that irked us more than anything was the absence of a simple ledge in the bathroom for toiletries, and no bedside tables for books or pocket change etc.

Location
Location was ideal for us with several shops restaurants/bars within a few hundred meters. For the able bodied, a pleasant 10min stroll takes you down to a black sandy beach. While we were there one or two hardy souls were swimming in the very rough sea.
Just outside the centre of Puerto de la Cruz we felt the location was quiet yet with the harbour and centre were within easy reach. A must while staying here is a visit to Loro Parque, again only a short distance away. Entrance isn’t cheap at 33eu’s, however this and a visit to the volcano on Tenerife were the highlights of our stay.

November Weather
Had 9 overcast but pleasantly warm days/nights with occasional short sharp showers. We only got one day of unbroken blue sky and sun. However, this is November and even when overcast temperatures never dropped to the point where a jacket was required even at night.

Overview
We liked the Hotel but would only recommend it to friends for a quiet break. Residents while we were there were mainly Spanish and German pensioners with very few guests from the UK. While we thought the food was 4* the accommodation though comfortable wasn’t. All the staff we had dealings with were very friendly, apart from a rather gruff grounds person who stalked the sun loungers looking for guests to growl at if they even looked like putting a shoe/sandal on his sun loungers. Cleaners visited every day and changed our bed 3 times during our 10 day stay. The Hotel is very clean. Take a kettle, we did have a percolator but prefer Tea. Do hire a car. Ours sat idle for a couple of days but being able to tour what is a very interesting island was a real bonus.

Room Tip: Apts looked better than the rooms. But you may find your balcony view is of a stone wall.

Since we last stayed here two years ago, the restaurant has gone downhill. The evening meals are centred round low-cost items, the veggies are overcooked, the salad selection very much reduced. There was little variety. Fruit was bruised and/or unripe. We wanted tap water to drink but the waiter refused to serve it, saying it was unfit to drink, and selling us instead a bottle of water for €1.50. This turned out to be a very small bottle (250 or 330ml - beer in town was cheaper.

Breakfast was somewhat better but again little variety. Coffee is OK, but the "juices" are sugary drinks.

Rooms are large and serviceable, but basic and faded. The whole hotel was very clean.

Room Tip: Ask for room on upper floor overlooking the pool.

I can only assume that some of the recent reviewers who gave poor scores must be talking about another hotel. Either that or they have unrealistic expectations. I stayed here with a friend for one week and found the room to be clean, comfortable and well maintained. Hot water is available at all times of day and night (unlike some other places I have stayed with higher ratings). There was such a good variety of food to choose from at every meal I certainly ate too much because I just had to try everything. They serve wines by the bottle with your meals as well as on tap. I slept like a log every night because the place falls silent after the bar closes. Access to the gym was free. OK, there wasn't much entertainment so maybe not the best choice for families with children but personally I don't like being pestered to play volleyball or do aerobics etc. so this didn't bother me! A large proportion of the guests were Spanish and in the 50-80 age bracket, so there is a very relaxed atmosphere. Reception very helpful and understanding considering I forgot to print off half of my holiday documentation before I arrived. Would stay again if in Puerto de la Cruz. The service met my expectations for a 4* hotel so I feel it is fair to give a 5/5 rating.

Room Tip: Best outlook is from the rooms overlooking the pool.

My friend and I spent a wonderful week at the Turquesa no complaints at all. Food choices excellent about 7 per meal and very good food too. Staff friendly and helpful, rooms clean and spacious. Walking distance to Loro Parque which is well worth 33 Euro (3rd visit for me) Entertainment in the evenings very good Snakes, Birds of Prey, Dancing etc. All in all very satisfied with our choice of hotel.
