Overall we were pleasantly surprised at how much we enjoyed our holiday; it was our first visit to Tenerife, stayed at the fabulour Hotel Riu Garoe, can't wait to go back again. Wonderful hotel in quiet location with stunning views. In every department all of the staff were amazing and did everything to make our stay so enjoyable. Buffet meals are something we try to avoid on holiday so we were a little apprehensive but the standard and choice of food at breakfast and dinner was impressive.

Just back today. The hotel and its staff are a credit to the Riu brand. We stayed here for a week and were treated to the highest standards of service.
Staying on a half board basis can sometimes bring an element of repetitiveness to the food offering but hotel presented a vast and varied selection over the week that we stayed.
Our room was immaculately kept during our time there and again house keeping excelled. A note - our room overlooked the front of the hotel and although quiet we would maybe ask for accommodation that overlooked the pool area or with a sea view.
Entertainment was although professional - a bit on the tame side. Predominatelly the hotel is populated by Germain guests of a certain age who obviously have what can only be described as reserved taste.
If you want a place to completely relax then you've just found it.

The hotel is on the outskirts of Puerto, but close to the Botanic Gardens and several nice restaurants. Excellent rooms, interesting interior decor, good service and friendly staff. Dinner is buffet style in two sittings, but don't expect a romantic candle-lit meal - bright lights and efficient service are the style here. However there's a wide range of excellent food on offer, both at dinner and breakfast.

The hotel has a German management and most of the guests spoke German when we were there. The beer is good, the local wine less so. Some evening entertainment is provided in the lounge bar but it's not exceptional.

Room Tip: Rooms on the east side have nice views towards the sea and hills.

We recently visited Tenerife for a two week break (28/1 to 11/2/13) - spending the first week in the north and the second in the south of the island. Owing to one of the passengers on our plane being taken ill on the outbound flight and hence a diversion via Lisbon, we did not arrive at the hotel until 3.00 am! We were met by a very pleasant gentleman who informed us that as the hotel was full, we had been allocated one of the suites for our first two nights stay - needless to say we did not object! We were escorted to the suite on the 3rd floor by a nice young man and on arrival we found a cold buffet had been left for us, together with a bottle of sparkling wine - very much appreciated but we were not able to make the most of it as by now it was 3.30am! We obviously enjoyed the use of a suite for two days and loved the views of the mountains and the sea.

On the third day we were moved to a room on the first floor (reception level) and again the room was of a good size, well furnished and clean, with views of the sea. The bed was rather hard but this was soon correcterd by a mattress topper. Our cleaner, Lola, was always cheerful and looked after us extremely well.

The service in the restaurants and bars was excellent. There was plenty of variety in the buffet breakfast and dinner. Freshly baked bread was always available and overall the food was hot (not always the case with Spanish hotels!) but a microwave was available if anything was not hot enough.

We like to relax after dinner and play board games. This hotel has a very pleasant area in the mezzanine area above reception for just such a purpose and although the bar and entertainment area is just below, you are not disturbed by the music and a lift takes you straight into the bar.

The location of the hotel in the La Paz district, does involve walking up and down a steep hill or alternatively lots of steps but the hotel do provide a shuttle bus and there is a bus stop 10 mins walk away giving access to other parts of the island. We really enjoyed our week at the Garoe and will certainly go there again when we visit Puerto de la Cruz. Yes probably 98% of the clientele were Germans but this did not disturb us at all - they were a very friendly group most of whom could speak some English!

Be aware that this is really a mainly german staying clientel, but the standard was very good, with all you could eat breakfast and evening meal, lots of choice and plenty of it. However there wer three of us in a room as the 2 bed ones were all booked, which made for being quite crapped with a bed bought into the room. Nice balconies. I would recommend one over the pool area as the sun goes down on your balcony, which is nice for late afternoon sun. Good position of hotel on the quiet edge of puerto de cruz, easy to find especially if coming by hire car, of which there are free spaces right outside the hotel. Reception staff were professional, smart and attentive. You'll receive a dressing gown for your time there too to use when ever, as long as it is given back the day before you leave.

Room Tip: Choose a room over the pool area, plus you'll see the top of mount el teide

My wife and I recently returned from the Hotel Riu Garoe at Puerto de la Cruz, Tenerife. We are repeating visitors to Riu hotels in many countries over several years due to the consistent standards of overall quality they offer. This hotel ranked higher than most other Riu hotels in so many ways, the reception, quality of accommodations, exemplary cleanliness, decor and furnishing throughout, superb and spacious pool and garden areas, but above all else the wonderful staff throughout the hotel. They were the most welcoming, friendly, with what appears to be an inherent willingness to serve and please, we couldn't praise them enough. They made our visit memorable.
As always there are issues which don't match expectations and this Riu turned out to be no exception.
The hotel is predominantly elderly German occupied of whom the vast majority were obviousy repeat guests of long standing. They were friendly and courteous in all regards. However they have apparently modelled the hotel daytime activities and evening entertainments to suit their requirements, in effect there are no organised daytime activities except 2 x mini golf organising efforts over two weks. Unused mini pool table, shuffle board game and table tennis badly located adjacent to each other in front of both sets of toilets which were unused/unusable.
The entertainment was poor and repetitive and consisted repeat performers of one or two
singers who accompanied prerecorded background music in a totally unsuitable venue bar where seating arrangements and columns restricted the views of the guests. Inflated drink prices did not help the situation.
The restaurant was spacious, of wonderful decor and furnishing and as in all other areas of the hotel was staffed by friendly, helpful and competent staff. The standard Riu buffet service was offered. A Salad island with a good variety of fresh soup, fish, meat and salad offerings frequently and well replenished. An Italian Pasta/ Pizza servery which offer a great range of freshly made pasta /noodle dishes many made to order while you wait. I recommend the Bolognese. A further island offered hot and cold desserts, fruits, ices, cheeses and breads etc. This was consistently well presented and offered real choice.
Finally there was a single cooking station comprising of a hotplate on one end frying two types of fish each night and a hotplate at the other end frying the meat offerings. In between were the vegetables offer as accompaniments. This important main course servery element was the singular most disappointing element of the hotel. Repetitively poor fare cooked poorly and served from unheated plates.Fish was cooked in small almost bite size pieces cooked naked withour any dressings sauces etc. Hamburgers and various sausages, steaks and cuts of loin pork, lamb cutlets, chicken cut so thin as to be invariably dry and chewy. I could offer more critical comments but feel minded to say no more than the fare overall on this station was neither 4 star nor Riu standard. I am sad to offer this review especially when there are so many excellent aspects to this hotel

Room Tip: Most rooms have good outlooks excepting those at the rear of the hotel which directly overlook the s...
