This is an establishment that punches well above its weight within the “three-star category” in which it chooses to place itself. It is well-run, friendly, and – with a couple of caveats mentioned below – in a fine location in town. We had few complaints during our time here, first as a couple and then with kids and grandchild in tow.

We spent nearly three weeks at Casablanca, so a comprehensive review is perhaps in order.

All too often, high-end hotels boasting excellent location and luxurious amenities – and the high tariffs that inevitably accompany such things – are let down by surly staff and a nonchalant, even unwelcoming atmosphere. Apartamentos Casablanca is a refreshing reversal of this rule. Nobody is going to claim this is the Ritz or the Waldorf Astoria, but the reception staff and others don’t seem to content themselves with “3-star ordinariness” – they were cordial and very helpful from Day One. This is important stuff: reception, cleaning personnel, and housekeeping are at the sharp end of any hotel operation. In this case they provided an excellent calling-card. Further, when things went wrong or certain items were missing, Casablanca was quick to act – another very positive feature that is not always a given.

The rooms are well enough equipped, though as others before have noted, bringing at least one SHARP kitchen knife from home is a good move if you plan on doing any self-catering. The kitchen has a four-hob stove and an oven, so one does not need to rely on the microwave or the sandwich toaster. We moved from one two-bedroomed apartment to another during our vacation and discovered the two places had markedly different kitchen/dining inventories: “missing” items and utensils were nevertheless brought promptly and with a smile. It seems some of the apartments are actually time-shares, but these are given to outside customers when they are otherwise unoccupied: this creates something approaching a “two-speed solution”, though it probably only manifests itself if one changes apartment in mid-stay, as we did.

The apartments are in at least three different sizes, and by one of those curious quirks of architects’ humour, the two-bedroomed apartments seemed to have the SMALLEST balconies – in spite of the fact that they (the architects) must have known that there would probably be four or more occupants. Again, it may be that some of the apartments on the top floors with suspiciously large terraces and BBQs are “owner-occupied” or time-shares.

The bathrooms in both our apartments were adequate, with enough towels, a bidet, and decent lighting and water-pressure, though both could have been improved by a walk-in shower rather than the bath & curtain arrangement. The website indicates that bathrooms in some other blocks have been refurbished recently: you may find these have been equipped with proper shower cabinets.

One particularly welcome thing in the bedrooms was excellent reading lamps above the bed, including LED spots on flexible metal arms. Beds were a little on the hard side, but perfectly comfortable. No air-con, but at least in November and December the ceiling fan was quite adequate. I’d guess anyone using the spare divan in the living-room in the height of summer might nevertheless relish a floor fan – there was no fan in the living/dining area. The room safe is chargeable, something like EUR 2.00 a day. Decent cupboard space.

A lot of the balconies face inward to the pool area and central courtyard. Here, height above ground is your only friend, in terms of more sunshine (especially in the winter months), not being overlooked by dozens of other guests, and also getting away from the noise from the pool and the bar terrace (most guests are at the mature end of the age spectrum, so it isn’t too loud or too late at night).

One of the location caveats is that some balconies in Blocks 3 to 6 can face out onto the relatively busy Avenida Marqués Villanueva de Prado (buses, ambulances, quite a lot of traffic, but again not too bad late at night, and no throbbing discos). These rooms get morning sun and views of Teide, while some in Blocks 7 and 8 overlook a quiet strip of garden, a pedestrian walkway, and then onto a pleasant leafy barranco, with cocks crowing in the morning, afternoon sun, and views of Teide and down to the sea. Outward-facing balconies in Blocks A and B overlook Calzada Martiánez (a slightly less noisy street), and can have sea views, but then again they are north-east-facing, so have limited sun.

Public areas are pleasant enough, and the pool, while not overly large, seems to have sufficient chairs around it even to cope with those pathetic wretches who are still unable to read the signs in several languages telling them sunbeds CANNOT be reserved. In winter, the lower sun and the buildings of the apartment complex make it necessary to move around to stay in the sunshine. Pool towels (and also the TV remote) are not charged, but require leaving your credit card number in case you forget to return them.

The “mostly elderly” clientéle in winter meant that families with children stood out a bit, but with one very obvious and extremely loud (British…) exception, harmony was maintained. There is also a small children’s pool, quite well-shaded. A lifeguard is on duty most of the day, but early-morning swims before breakfast looked to be prohibited before 9:00, which was a shame. We did not eat in the hotel restaurant, so cannot really comment. There are pool and table-tennis tables, a gym, a kids’ playroom, a library (take a book, leave a book), a coin-operated laundry, an outdoor chessboard, and even carpet bowls, with bowls matches twice a week, if that is your thing. I’m not sure who actually owns the two tennis courts just outside the front entrance, but I think they are usable for a fee.

Some have warned of the steps down to the town and the seafront. Yes, there are 100+ steps on the Camino Las Cabras, and it is probably wise to note this before you book, but they are hardly the North Face of the Eiger, and if I could get up and down them daily with shopping bags and my creaky 60-something arthritic knees, I don’t see why they should pose a huge problem. Besides, taxis are cheap for those whose bodies are really not up to it. The advantage of this location, as I see it, is that you are quite close to the town proper, to the excellent Lago Martianez seawater pools, to a very reasonable Mercadona supermarket, and to some quite delightfully un-tacky local restaurants, rather than being stuck out in the hotel-ghetto suburbs near Loro Parque. These looked pretty soul-destroying from the bus as we headed west towards Los Realejos (the starting point for a super cliff walk).

Giving a place five TA blobs is always a bit of a risk, as some people are bound to get the wrong impression and raise their expectations sky-high. Don’t be misled: this is simply a very well-run and welcoming establishment in its price class, and that’s why it is riding so high in the TA rankings.

Many thanks to Marta, Irene, and many, many others whose names we didn’t catch. You are what makes Casablanca the sort of place one wants to return to!

Recommended.

Room tip: Block 8 outward-facing is relatively quiet and has afternoon sun and views of Teide. Reception staff do their best to help.

We enjoyed the location and spacious apartment but my wife thought the bed was hard and pillow uncomfortable. The customer service was great as was the bar service for food and drink. We would stay here again but would change rooms and hope for a better bed. It was clean and had good vehicle parking also.
