Hotel Luabay, known locally as Hotel Florida, is located on the edge of Puerto de la Cruz, a little over ten minutes walk into town, five minutes walk down the hill to the beach, five minutes walk up the hill to a market, which has a street market on a Saturday.
Clean and tidy, rooms clean.
A couple of years ago the rooms were renovated. Out went quality, functional furniture, in came cheap tack. Main problem is lack of storage space, lack of surfaces. There used to be a table, with drawers, a seat. No longer. The drawers at the side of the bed can take a paperback novel, nothing more.
Flat screen TV. Poor choice of channels. BBC World, but no Al Jazeera, no Russia Today.
Oppressive loud music everywhere in the hotel, in reception, in the lifts, in dining room, by the pool.
Pool freezing cold, no heating.
One day one of the underwater pool lamps came loose and was floating on the end of a cable in the pool. No attempt was made to fix and remained like this for the rest of my holiday.
Service in the dining room was abysmal. Not the fault of the waiters as they were working very hard, there just was not enough of them. Short-sighted cost cutting, many waiters had been fired, now not enough waiters. At breakfast I had to clear and set my table. I could have waited for a waiter, but how long? In the evening dirty dishes would pile up on the table, until a waiter was called to deal with the problem.
Breakfast was reasonable and a fairly wide choice. What masqueraded as muesli was improved with the addition of dried fruits. Powdered milk not fresh milk. Fresh bananas, though often green or rotten. Bacon was very poor quality, either burnt or nearly raw. The reason was laid in overlapping strips, the bits exposed were burnt, that covered left uncooked. I noticed the chef took his bacon and laid it on the hot plate.
At breakfast they were always running out. No plates, no cups or sauces, no bowls, no bread, no milk, no tea etc. If you told them the problem was fixed, but why no one in charge monitoring the situation?
In the evening the soup was usually very good, as was the salad and pasta, but the main dishes ranged from about acceptable to pretty disgusting, very cheap cuts of meat. Chips, the impression was they were left to dry up, get cold, then served. No self-respecting chef would serve food in that state, they should have been binned. Food cooked on a hot plate was balanced on a rail in front of the hot plate. Very dangerous, it would only take one child to reach up, and have hot scalding fat poured all over. Always a good range of fresh fruit. Sometimes the melon was under ripe, but when it was slightly over ripe it was delicious and very juicy.
Reception always very helpful.
Daylight robbery for the use of internet on what were little better than arcade machines. Even charging for wifi. When for the cost of a drink, wifi free in bars, use of wifi should be free. To use the internet better to walk into town where internet is much cheaper and on superior machines. Try below Dania Park Hotel, and a couple of streets up from the main promenade.
There were very few sunbeds. On the sun terrace where there was rows and rows of sunbeds, now a few scattered around the edge, a fraction of what there was. Mattresses for the sunbeds were left out overnight and in the rain. There were sodden the next day and unusable. Very few parasols for the sunbeds, leaving people to get burnt.
Few English, mainly German and Spanish.
A Thomson representative who was very rarely seen, and when he was seen he was a waste of space and completely useless. He was told of problems that were very easily rectified, but was not interested, chose to do nothing. He even lied, claiming he had raised issues. When this was checked, he had not.
The problems at the hotel are down to a useless manger and cost cutting. He left at the end of my holiday, much to the relief of both guests and staff as he was an unmitigated disaster and had not a clue how to run a hotel. How can you run a hotel where people come for the sun and there are hardly any sunbeds, a pool where people would like to swim, but too cold as no heating, food that at times was disgusting?
