Hotel Luabay, known locally as Hotel Florida, is located on the edge of Puerto de la Cruz, a little over ten minutes walk into town, five minutes walk down the hill to the beach, five minutes walk up the hill to a market, which has a street market on a Saturday.

Clean and tidy, rooms clean.

A couple of years ago the rooms were renovated. Out went quality, functional furniture, in came cheap tack. Main problem is lack of storage space, lack of surfaces. There used to be a table, with drawers, a seat. No longer. The drawers at the side of the bed can take a paperback novel, nothing more.

Flat screen TV. Poor choice of channels. BBC World, but no Al Jazeera, no Russia Today.

Oppressive loud music everywhere in the hotel, in reception, in the lifts, in dining room, by the pool.

Pool freezing cold, no heating.

One day one of the underwater pool lamps came loose and was floating on the end of a cable in the pool. No attempt was made to fix and remained like this for the rest of my holiday.

Service in the dining room was abysmal. Not the fault of the waiters as they were working very hard, there just was not enough of them. Short-sighted cost cutting, many waiters had been fired, now not enough waiters. At breakfast I had to clear and set my table. I could have waited for a waiter, but how long? In the evening dirty dishes would pile up on the table, until a waiter was called to deal with the problem.

Breakfast was reasonable and a fairly wide choice. What masqueraded as muesli was improved with the addition of dried fruits. Powdered milk not fresh milk. Fresh bananas, though often green or rotten. Bacon was very poor quality, either burnt or nearly raw. The reason was laid in overlapping strips, the bits exposed were burnt, that covered left uncooked. I noticed the chef took his bacon and laid it on the hot plate.

At breakfast they were always running out. No plates, no cups or sauces, no bowls, no bread, no milk, no tea etc. If you told them the problem was fixed, but why no one in charge monitoring the situation?

In the evening the soup was usually very good, as was the salad and pasta, but the main dishes ranged from about acceptable to pretty disgusting, very cheap cuts of meat. Chips, the impression was they were left to dry up, get cold, then served. No self-respecting chef would serve food in that state, they should have been binned. Food cooked on a hot plate was balanced on a rail in front of the hot plate. Very dangerous, it would only take one child to reach up, and have hot scalding fat poured all over. Always a good range of fresh fruit. Sometimes the melon was under ripe, but when it was slightly over ripe it was delicious and very juicy.

Reception always very helpful.

Daylight robbery for the use of internet on what were little better than arcade machines. Even charging for wifi. When for the cost of a drink, wifi free in bars, use of wifi should be free. To use the internet better to walk into town where internet is much cheaper and on superior machines. Try below Dania Park Hotel, and a couple of streets up from the main promenade.

There were very few sunbeds. On the sun terrace where there was rows and rows of sunbeds, now a few scattered around the edge, a fraction of what there was. Mattresses for the sunbeds were left out overnight and in the rain. There were sodden the next day and unusable. Very few parasols for the sunbeds, leaving people to get burnt.

Few English, mainly German and Spanish.

A Thomson representative who was very rarely seen, and when he was seen he was a waste of space and completely useless. He was told of problems that were very easily rectified, but was not interested, chose to do nothing. He even lied, claiming he had raised issues. When this was checked, he had not.

The problems at the hotel are down to a useless manger and cost cutting. He left at the end of my holiday, much to the relief of both guests and staff as he was an unmitigated disaster and had not a clue how to run a hotel. How can you run a hotel where people come for the sun and there are hardly any sunbeds, a pool where people would like to swim, but too cold as no heating, food that at times was disgusting?

My wife and I spent the second week in January at the Luabay. The location was great although it could get a bit noisy outside in the street below at night sometimes. The hotel was spacious, had pretty good food with a wide range of choice and fresh fish cooked during the evening meal every night. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful and the place was very clean. The only negative things that bugged us were (1) when we were in the hotel, apart from the corridors leading to the bedrooms, and the bedroms themselves, there was no way to get away from the awful piped music. Having some Dillon tribute-type singer whinging away as we ate our meal took the edge of our meals a bit. (2) The culture of booking a sunbed at dawn (or maybe before) with a beach towel is alive and well at the Luabay. Some hotels ban this practice and I hope the Luabay will. At times sunbeds were vacant for two hours or more and then their absentee occupants would return, remove their towels and leave the pool area. Overall though, we had a good time and thought that the hotel offered very good value for money.

Room Tip: We were on the seventh floor and our room had a good view of the volcano.(NE side?). Leave the balco...

Booked relatively last minute so were not sure what we would get as not many choices available. Quicker journey from South Airport than anticipated which was great. Receptionist was a bit slow to acknowledge us and check us in, but got the impression a group of lads were trying to pull a fast one on their extras bill so his mind was elsewhere.

A little disappointed not to be able to see the sea but could see Mt Teide so that was fine. Balcony was pretty tiny - enough space for a table and two chairs, so no sunbathing on the private terrace. Only ground floor terraces seemed larger and then you had people on sunloungers overlooking you all day.

Found the air conditioning wasnt worth turning on for the cooling effect one got, but being 5 floors up we left the doors open all night.

Food was good, fairly varied and plentiful - though unless you got it straight of the griddle it was often lukewarm ( found a microwave on last day!). Breakfast omelettes to die for!

Agree with comments about the age of the sunloungers, or at least the mattresses which could do with a really good scrub. As with many hotels they ask that you dont reserve loungers and then disappear for hours, but if you didnt then everyone else did so you never got one - so after a few days I decided that if you cant beat them join them.

Definitely a much older more sedate crowd, I sympathise with the comment Kelly makes about 60+ dancers waltzing, but this is the kind of place it is and no worse for that. My only comment about the live music was that it was almost totally geared to Spanish and "ballroom" rhythms so very hard to get up and dance anything else.

Will certainly go back to the resort and possibly to the Hotel, plenty more to see and despite very small gripes nothing was annoying enough to make us veto in the future. Would try to go when the chance of good weather all week was better but much warmer than GB!

Room Tip: Be prepared to pay extra for anything extra. Room on higher floor costs more, sea view costs more. S...

Spent the first week of January at Luabay with my husband and eleven year old son. What a fantastic place and lovely location. Spacious and spotlessly clean room, great food, friendly staff, good activity programme for the kids, the only thing that I could pick fault with were the sunloungers on the top terrace which had obviously seen better days!! Would not hesitate to recommend this hotel to anyone, we can't wait to return next year.

My wife and I have just returned from a week at the Luabay Hotel. We stayed on half board basis and thoroughly enjoyed our time. The resort is very pretty and not your typical holiday resort which suited us. The hotel was very good, the staff all friendly and helpful. The food was very good with a good choice. We would really recommend the hotel as it provides excellent value for money. We would have no hesitation in returning.
Although it would have been nice to have had free wifi, it was not a major problem. Internet access was available very close by at a cheap rate and you could always go to MacDonalds and take advantage of their free wifi.

Room Tip: We had a room at the front of the hotel South facing, from which we got great views of the sea and M...

Me and my boyfriend went on our second holiday here to luabay, the hotel pictures/reviews sounded fantastic! As we arrived at the hotel it was raining (heavily) and we were glad to get to the pretty hotel and drop our bags and get some tea.
We were greeted by a gentleman at reception who gave us our room key and up in the lift we went. We got into the room which was beautiful! We looked out of the window and we had a view of a grotty car park and NO balcony when I had paid extra for one? Without un-packing we went back down to reception and explained the misunderstanding to the receptionist. To which he explained the hotel was "full" and we would have to return the following day we were told we could be moved up to a sea view room with a balcony.

As it was raining, dotted almost everywhere were buckets to catch dripping water from the ceiling and towels to soak up any wet on the floor! This was ranging from the resturant to the entertainment room, hall wall and near the lift! I saw an elderly man trip over one of the towels!
The entertainment consisted of 60+ year olds dancing the waltz etc so we had tea which was ok and went to bed.

The following morning we had breakfast and managed to make it to the table while dodging the buckets full of water and soggy towels on the floor! Then we returned to reception to be told we could move only one floor up so effectively would only have a better/higher view of the car park with no balcony?? It was only when my BOYFRIEND pointed to a highlighted room on the 8th floor and asked "is that one not free" that the receptionist started to sweat. He stumbled over his words umming and arring. He then explain that it was in fact empty and that he was going to check if the room was clean, he typed a number into his mobile and began shouting in Spanish down the phone. Then put the phone down and smashed it against the floor in a massive rage! He then explained the room was free and we went up slightly scared. The room was beautiful but quite frankly, enough was enough. After a dozen phone calls we managed to move hotels. As we checked out almost 4 days early not one of the reception staff asked why we were leaving so early. The started muttering to one another in Spanish.

Which is so rude!!!

I would never EVER go to luabay again and I have told all friends/family/clients to avoid it like the plague! Waist of a holiday, time and money! Don't do it!!!

Dear Kelly, we are very sorry that you were not satisfied with your stay at our hotel and decided to leave early. The behavior of our staff you are describing is unacceptable and we will look into this situation in more detail, believing there might have been a misunderstanding, as there would be no reason for our staff to lose temper in the situation you are describing. We experienced very strong rains this season and are working on the problems with the ceilings to prevent the rain from entering and would like to take this chance to apologize for the inconvenience this might have caused you. It would be a great pleasure if you would give us another chance on a future visit.

On our annual visit to Luabay Puerto de la Cruz once again we found the staff at the hotel to be friendly and efficient.
There have been some changes in the hotel in recent years but the thing that never changes is the treatment received from all the different departments.
If it is within their means they go out of their way to help.
Some of the staff we know better then others although we are grateful to everyone who made our stay enjoyable.
There are other hotels in the Puerto similar to Luabay, but what encourages us to return year after year is the welcome we receive from the Staff.
Well done "Team Luabay"!
