Hotel El Tope
Ranked #33 of 82 Hotels in Puerto de la Cruz
Reviewed December 20, 2010

We really enjoyed our stay at El Tope. We found the staff to be very helpful. (The water would not drain out of the bath, so they had that fixed by the time we had returned from a day's outing.) The restaurant staff are possibly some of the hardest-working waiters I have seen in a long time!
The location was great - it meant we could walk down to the beach and town centre, or also walk up (where we walked most evenings after dinner) to La Paz and the lookout point. We felt very safe here.
The room was great - the double set of doors meant that we never heard anything from the corridor outside, although we were right near the stairs. We had a lovely little balcony. Our room wasn't on the sunny side, but we didn't mind this because there were always sun loungers free by the pool and it was nice to have a view of the sea.
The evening entertainment was hard on the ears. It would be nice to have something cultural - but instead, they were usually mediocre singers with a keyboard - some variety would have been good, since most people stay for a week or fortnight. Let's just say I was grateful for the double doors!
The food was good, it was always being replenished. There was a lot of variety (for non-vegetarians) and the fruit was fab. The meat wasn't the best, but there was always the option of fish, which was freshly cooked on the hotplate.
We went to Loro Parque, which was 32 Euros, but we spent the whole day there. We recommend that you take the first Loro Parque train (free, and goes from town) at 9am, and then watch ALL the shows. This left us free after midday to wander around and enjoy the other attractions. We saw some lovely orchids here. Having been to the Orchid Garden the day before, we felt slightly ripped off that we had paid around 5 Euros each to see a mediocre garden, when Loro Parque had heaps of greenery and lots of well cared-for orchids.
The worst thing was finding souvenirs. They were all made in China! The evening entertainment was disappointing, but it was a good reason to leave the hotel and head up the hill for a walk. There was a gym, but it cost 5 Euros to use, which we thought was a bit cheeky in a 4* hotel.
The best thing was the walking. We did not hire a car, we chose to explore Puerto de la Cruz on foot and we had a fabulous time, with great weather and lots to see. We also went to the creperie La Vie en Rose and had the chocolate and pear crepe and yes, it was amazing!
Perhaps not in the near future, but I would not hesitate to return to this hotel. We were looking for a relaxing winter break in the sun, and that is precisely what we got.

We booked this hotel after reading its reviews on Trip Advisor and took the advice to book a superior room. The room was large with a very big balcony on the first floor with a view out to sea. The balcony had a table and two chairs and two sun loungers with mattresses. The beds were comfortable and we asked for extra pillows which arrived immediately. There was a fridge and a kettle and cups. We were given 2 tea bags and 2 satchets of coffee and 2 tiny cartons of milk every day. There were also 2 bananas and 2 apples and a bottle of sparkling wine in the room when we arrived. We asked if we could swap the wine for a bottle of red but this was not allowed! There is a small supermarket about 2 mins uphill and a big supermarket about 5 mins downhill. We discovered after a few days that our knees were grateful if we went up and down the hill on the pavement rather than by the steps. The food was o.k although it seemed to get cold very quickly. It was replenished very frequently and even towards the end of meal time there was still plenty of choice. As a vegetarian I struggled to find things to eat at dinner. There were always plenty of salads but not many other vegetables apart from potatoes. My husband said the meat was often rather dry and the same choices seemed to be repeated several times. I also don't find it very relaxing when everyone is trudging around with plates of food. I think water should be provided free at dinner time especially as sparkling wine is provided free at breakfast. Breakfast was good with lots of choice of breads, cereals, fruit, ham, cheese, cooked food etc. However the coffee was probably the worst I had ever tasted.
The evening entertainment was appallingly bad and should be stopped. The lounge/bar area had no atmosphere so not many sat here although it could have been improved.
Puerto de la Cruz had had a tropical storm the day before we arrived which had blown down trees, blown out windows in other hotels and blown sun loungers into swimming pools and out of hotel gardens, however we were really impressed with how quickly the mess was cleared up. Everywhere we went there seemed to be teams of people removing fallen trees and clearing up branches and leaves.
The orchid garden is very close to the hotel and deserves a visit and a climb up to Taoro park is worthwhile because of the views of the town. The Botanical garden was closed because of the storm, but this was the only place we couldn't visit. There is a Happy Train which goes from the town centre to Loro park although its not far to walk. It is quite expensive at 32 Euros to get into Loro park so we didn't go this time as we have been before but it really is worth a visit. There are lots of TITSA buses going to surrounding towns. They now go from the street near the bus station and the bus station has been abandoned.
English visitors are very much in the minority in Puerto de la Cruz but that didn't cause any problems, staff in shops and cafes are mostly friendly and polite as were all the staff in the hotel. We will go back here for a relaxing winter holiday and despite the dull food the hotel was very good value for money.

We spent a week at the El Tope at the beginning of October on a Half Board basis. This worked out fine for us, as we could eat out and try different places at lunch time. We had a bit of rain, but the rest of the time it was hot.

The Hotel is located on a hill, which you can reach by a long flight of steps, or you can walk on the pavement alongside the steep road. But this wasn’t a problem for us, being only 23/27 – good exercise :o) It really wasn’t as bad as some reviews made out!

The Hotel had a charming lounge/reception area, with entertainment each evening (not really our taste, so we did our own thing). The dining room was nice and spacious with lovely views. We really enjoyed the food, with a good selection for both breakfast and dinner – buffet style. They had fresh meat on the hot counter every night – from tuna steak to pork. I would recommend the soups, which I tried most nights, and the fruit was really fresh and juicy :o) Our room was on the 5th floor, accessible by lift. We had the most fabulous view....overlooking the Hotel pool, then up to Mount Teide, and over the town towards the sea. It was really beautiful, and we felt very lucky! We spent most evenings on our balcony with a couple of drinks, watching the sun go down.....very romantic!! The room itself was big and airy, the beds were nice and firm, there was a free fridge (great for storing drinks) and double wardrobes. We had good air conditioning, though some people we knew complained, but it suited us fine. On arrival, we also had a tray with fruit, bread, cheese, ham and juice, as we got to the Hotel in the early hours of the morning – a nice touch. I would recommend hiring the safe, which we did for the duration of our stay – only a couple of Euros per day. We had a nice big bathroom, and had our towels changed every other day (you could have your towels changed daily if you wanted, but we didn’t feel the need to). The Hotel’s cleanliness was second to none. The cleaners really kept on top of it....well done! The Hotel staff were very friendly and helpful – top marks! :o)

Once we booked the Hotel, I started to worry that we would stick out like a sore thumb seeing as we are only a young couple. And even though about 80% of the people were over 50, it really didn’t matter, and we met some really lovely friendly people. So if you’re young, don’t let this put you off! There was a mixture of nationalities at the Hotel – mostly German and British.

Puerto De La Cruz is a picturesque resort at the north of the island....much quieter than resorts such as Playa De Las Americas at the south of the island. There were lots of nice cafes and restaurants, as well as lots of souvenir shops. There was only a small beach in the town, but we’re not really beach people so it didn’t bother us. If you want to buy any drinks/snacks to take back to the Hotel, I would recommend shopping at the supermarket at the bottom of the hill (Las Piramides de Martianez) – cheapest by far. We did a lot of exploring whilst here, and if you keep walking up from the Hotel, you’ll come to the area of La Paz....with some lovely restaurants and beautiful views – nice and peaceful. We also stumbled across La Vie en Rose in La Paz, a French style restaurant/creperie, which we visited twice. I’d highly recommend the crepe with chocolate and pear....yummy :o)

We were on a budget and therefore couldn’t afford many excursions....but the one place we did visit was Loro Parque. We bought our tickets through the Thomson Rep, which was the same price as on the gate. To get there, we got the free land train from outside McDonalds in the centre of the resort, which took us straight there (only took about 10/15 minutes). Once you’re there, you get your photo taken with a couple of the parrots, which you can then buy on your way out if you want to – only cost 6 Euros, and a great souvenir. You MUST watch the Orca Whale show and the Dolphin show....they were AMAZING! Also, Planet Penguin was truly magical! You can easily spend the whole day here – we were there for about 6 hours. Think it was about 64 Euros for both of us, which is a bit pricy, but well worth it.

Overall we had a wonderful time in Puerto De La Cruz, and it was a great choice for our honeymoon destination. I would recommend the El Tope to anyone. It was the first time my Husband and I had been to Tenerife, but we will definitely be returning. Hopefully with a family in tow next time :o)

This is a wonderful hotel, big rooms with fantastic view, quiet during the night, very clean. I particulary loved the common areas:the charming lobby, bright restaurant, well cared garden, panoramic swimingpool (even if is better to go to the Martianez pools because the hotel one is quite small and crowded). Breakfast was very good, the champagne every morning is something to try, and dinner always good. Staff very kind, especially the waiters at the Restaurant. Internet wifi available in the lobby and in the swiming pool. The stairs to go down and return to the hotel aren't a problem, we didn't even note that, the location is perfect, very close to everything (10-15 mins walking to Plaza del Charco, 3 minutes to the martianez pools) and far enaugh to the noisy small streets. We would come back to the Tope!!!
Please note that there are no beaches in Puerto de la Cruz, is a nice town, you can relax, go to the pools, visit the Teide, rent a car and visit the entire island but forget about the beach.

Just had two week stay at this hotel - excellent in every way - very clean super friendly staff and very good food with plenty of choice. We had never been to any of the Canaries (usually Greek fanatics) but
fancied a change and we were well pleased. The steps are a bit daunting at first but plenty of flat bits inbetween aand plenty of benches to have a rest. We shall certainly try the Canaries again.

Myself and my partner stayed in the el tope for 14 nights and we can't pick one single fault with it. When we booked we asked for a high floor room and we were given a room on the top floor with a brilliant roof terrace and a great view of the resort. When we arrived it was quite late and we had missed dinner, but when we arrived in the room there was a tray lined with food (bread, fruit, salad, water). The maid service was excellent, the room was left spotless every single day. All the staff are friendly and happy to help with any problems.
The hotel is located up a large amount of step, which wasn't a problem for us as we are only 19 and 21. If you don't fancy the exercise though there is a taxi rank at the bottom of the hill.
Puerto de la cruz is a lovely resort. My partner and i were a little worried at first as we though the resort might be too quiet, and we couldn't have been more wrong. Its relaxed in the day but when the sun goes down there is plenty to do. When staying in this resort you must must MUST visit the beehive 1 pub its brilliant :D

This was our first visit to Tenerife and to the El Tope. Overall our experience was excellent and we would not hesitate to return.
Yes, there are 126 steps between the hotel and the town, but these are wide and well made. They are laid out in flights of 10-12 with 'landings' between each flight, many of which have a bench or resting place. My wife and I are in our mid fifties and had no problem going up and down several times a day.
The hotel is clean and pleasant, although a little old fashioned. The bedroom was spacious and the beds were firm - a far cry from some of the saggy mattresses we have slept on in the past. We booked a 'superior' room which had it's own sun terrace with loungers. The public areas of the hotel are quiet and peaceful - ideal for sitting to read for an hour.
Meals are served buffet-style and were generally quite varied. Over a two week period the menu did repeat, but there was enough variety for it not to matter.
We found the staff to be incredibly helpful. My wife cannot eat wheat or gluten, and having mentioned this to the chef a supply of special bread and cake was immediately ordered and made available to her each breakfast time. As another example, our room was supposed to have tea and coffee making facilities but these were missing when we arrived. I walked down from the first floor to reception to let them know, and by the time I walked back upstairs the stuff had arrived.
Outside there is a pool which never got overcrowded, and pleasant gardens which were well kept.
The only downside was the 'entertainment' which was put on three times a week and featured very bland "guy on keyboard" type music.
Puerto de la Cruz itself is a nice town with some good shops. There is no lager-lout element and it is ideal for couples or families.
