Went slightly concerned with some reviews here poor. But had a good time. As others say bit jaded but great value booked 10 nights through Thomson. We joined a walking group for 5 of the 9 days, great location for this and the dry but dull weather was good for this. Also would not book superior again as not sunny enough for balcony. But the mountain view side had a lot of noise at night from the town below at start of carnival week so sea better if carnival week. Only point to mention is that hairdryer is the blow sort in the bathroom. Take your own if that matters. Meat and fish freshly cooked lots of choice of salads, nice soups. Great variety at breakfast.

My wife & I are just back from a week at Porto De La Cruz in Tenerife (15 - 22 Feb 2013).

The hotel El Tope was good overall -- the food is good (and that is coming from someone who does not like the 'plate & shuffle' buffet style). The service from waiters & reception staff was also good - very responsive eg Jose in the restaurent is excellent. The pool area is very private & well serviced. On the down side the hotel is rather 'jaded' - carpets are worn & the standard rooms a little scruffy.
We had a Superior Room booked through Thomson's with a sea view - however the sea view was very distant & blocked by the high rise San Felipe Hotel. So we asked to be moved to a mountain room view on the opposite side of the hotel --- these have a great view of the hillside, lots of colourful flowers etc plus a good view of Teide. However, because Thompson's did not reserve Superior Rooms with a mountain view we had to have a Standard room instead -- we have fed this back to them. So, the tip is to stay on the mountain view side of the hotel (our room was 204). Two other things about the hotel -- it has a rather 'sedate' nature & clientelle; also there is a walk down steep steps or road to the town -- this is no problem for most people.

We really liked Porto De La Cruz -- you can catch the local bus just around the corner from El Tope up into the hills/mountains -- we'd recommend walking in the Caldira & Agaumansa area (45 mins away) -- some lovely walks, all well signed & ranging from 2 hours to 5 hours! If using the local bus buy a 'BONO' card from a local shop -- this provides 'credit' on the bus at half price -- costs 15 or 25 euro per card & you can share a card between 2 - typical cost of a journey up into the mountains is only 3.60 return.Without a BONO card you pay double.
We also recommend:

* the Botanical Gardens in Porto -- absolutely fab!
* the walk to the Jardin Beach at the far end of the town -- where all the locals go
* going at Carnival time -- this is the weekend after Ash Wednesday & was fantastic -- eg 300 men dressed as women racing uphill in high heels!! Also a great display of floats etc
* the coastal walk north out of the town

Finally a note about the weather -- Porto is close to the mountains & so gets more low cloud -- we had 50% sun, 45% sun/cloud & 5% rain --- you'd be unlucky to get low cloud all week.

Overall, we had a great week and much prefer Porto to the south of the island - despite the risk of more cloud cover, there is so much more to do! We would definitely go again.

Steve & Suzanne

Room Tip: Rooms 204 (standard) & 104 (superior) have great mountain views.

February half term in Puerto de la Cruz and a return visit to the El Tope. This time we had a room downstairs below the reception area/dining room area. I was a little concerned about this before we went but in actual fact the room was fine, 2 comfy easy chairs along with the bed, desk, TV, fridge, etc and roomy bathroom. Either 2 flights of stairs or lift one floor and then stairs. It was very quiet and the only drawback was the glassed in balcony but the view was over the town was OK.
The meals in the restaurant were varied with fish show cooked by a chef and also either chicken on the grill too or a roast carvery. Sufficient variety of meat and vegetarian options for main course and deserts. Fruit, yogurt and cereals at breakfast along with eggs cooked to order and cold meats and cheeses and lovely breads.
Nice clean pool area with plenty of beds, mattresses & towels provided and the snacks were not too expensive at lunch time.
Staff all very pleasant and helpful - our shower stopped working one morning , I told reception and by the time we had returned from a walk, it was mended.
It is a steep walk down to the town itself but once there a really nice place to wander around - we were there in Carnival week which added interest but it is not just a holiday resort . There are hotels but the little streets are interesting and the main square is delightful. A very pleasant walk right along the coast from the amazing pools and lido area(daily charge about 40euro) through the town past the harbour to the next beach which is landscaped really well.
If you go up the hill from the hotel a large area of mainly hotels and apartments along with the Botanical Gardens.
We caught the bus into Santa Cruz but this was a little disappointing. There are plenty of trips on offer but the weather was unfortunately not brilliant so we did a lot of local walking rather than sight seeing. When the sun did come out it was hot and certainly needed the sun cream! The north of the island is green and plenty of banana plantations around whereas the south is drier and more rocky - and more sunny whilst we were there!

When you return from a holiday in a place you've never been before, I guess the verdict is based on whether you liked it enough to go back again or would you do things differently next time

In the case of the island of Tenerife, it's a definite "yes". In fact, we have already booked for January 2014. Although we couldn't go everywhere in 10 days, we did get around quite a bit and found the scenery and coastline beautiful and varied, particularly in the north.

We chose the resort of Puerto de la Cruz after a fair amount of research because we wanted an established town with character as well as facilities but not a megaresort full of pubs, clubs and burger outlets. Again we came up trumps with this choice and completely fell for the place and will be returning.

The Gran Hotel El Tope turned out to be more or less as other reviewers had described it. The elevated location, just beyond the bustle of the town centre was good if you were prepared to climb the hill back up from the town and seafront. The seaview was unfortunately slightly spoilt by another, taller hotel nearer to the beach and also by the unattractive roof area of a shopping centre lower down the hill.

The hotel was spacious and never felt overcrowded, although it could get very busy in the restaurant at peak times. In the main, the staff were very accommodating and the restaurant service efficient. The food was not "cordon bleu" but we didn't expect this and always found lots to choose from and plenty of it. The local wines were very acceptable and were not marked up in price nearly as much as they are in the UK.

I agree that, in certain areas, the decor is looking dated and even worn. For example, the main stair carpet is ready for replacement and there was some peeling wallpaper in our room. However the place as a whole does have a genuine Spanish charm about it although few of the guests were Spanish or English, the majority being German holidaymakers.

We had booked a superior room but, in retrospect, wouldn't bother next time. Although we gained more interior space for a couch, chair and coffee table, the standard room would have been perfectly adequate and the balcony was huge but had no privacy.

The evening entertainment was different each day and reasonably enjoyable with a good standard of musicians, singers and a local folk dancing group.

So, would we return to the El Tope? We nearly re-booked and would seriously consider it in the future but for now, we have decided to try a different hotel on the seafront and close to the lido. Only time will tell whether or not we have made the right decision!

Room Tip: The rooms on the upper floors presumably have a better view than Floor 1 where we were. We chose a s...

My sister and her husband love this family run hotel and they persuaded us to give it another go and to stay with them at the hotel over Xmas.

I wasn't too sure as the last time we went we weren't overly imprssed with it. I'm glad we did give it a 2nd chance. We had a great weeks holiday, the food was excellent, especially breakfast. Plenty of options in the evening.

All the staff...from those working reception and to all the waiters in the restaurant were great...nothing was too much trouble and always had the time to chat with you. This is a fantatstic family run hotel that has many visitors (like my sister & her husband) who visit over and over again......so they must be getting something right!

And the Germans love the place and they have an eye for good hotels.

So I hold my hand up and admit I was overly critical last time and in fact we plan to go there again next winter.
Lovely hotel....great staff!

Very noice location, in the upper part of town. Very quiet overnight so the sleep quality is excellent, no nightclubs or late night bars around the area to keep you awake at night.. Very clean, staff very polite and helpful, especially the waiting staff. Great view on the upper floors. Ideal for a beach holiday. Decent buffet breakfast is served, unlike other hotels in the area.
There is a little parking area for residents but on peak time finding a spot can be a hassle

location: The location of the hotel is one of the best ever. The hotel is located a little up the small hill (5 minuts walk up bu stairs on by road).

rooms: Very clean, cleaned everyday, nothing was stolen, we didn't use safe. Beds are very comfortable. We had room on the -1 floor with the sea view - it was excellent. HINT: There is very weak internet connection in the lower level rooms. In the rest part of the hotel the signal is strong and the internet is for free.

people: We were in January 2013 and 98% of people were in age of 50+. If you are looking for some good party in hotel or to find other young people- forget it.

restaurant/food: very good, tasty, but mostly european (german). The buffet is large. You have to pay for water 1,5 eur, beer 3,00, wine 10eur/bottle. However, this what is usually bothering me in such a places is a fact, that besides that we are on the coast, only the 2% of the food is fish or sea food. HINT: On the passage down in the city by the sea, there are couple of nice restaurants. If someone likes sea food I can suggest Restaurant Bodega with the best cuttle fish ever!!!! In Teneriffa they call it CHOCOS :) Price 8,00 for the meal (2 cuttle fish, canarian potatos + green and hot sauce) is not so much.

In the area: Lago Martianez - great place!! However I have some request to the ladies in the age 60+. I respect your experience anf the fact that you breed and raise children, but if you are 60 or more - please don' take your top off! ;) Lago Martianez - great place however there is a lot of old people taking the sunbath almost naked. However if it turns somebody on - he will be in Heaven!

Rent a car: www.teneriferentacar.com - great cars, service.

Summarizing, hotel EL TOPE is great place to stay if you want to visit Tenerifaduring the day, and take comfortable rest during the night.
