“Early birds get the best experience”
Reviewed May 12, 2013

Though now very commercialised, a visit to Masca is high on the list of places to see down this end of the island. Nightmare single track road makes it best to visit early or late in the day. An early visit gives the best experience as the sun comes over surrounding mountainous cliffs and the water taxi back to los gigantes is enjoyable. You will need to dress for very cool temperatures (11 degrees) until the sun hits after mid-day.

“The Masca Gorge”
Reviewed May 9, 2013

The village of Masca is nestled in the remote Teno mountains. It takes about 1.5 hours to reach Masca from the south coast and the final part of the journey involves a hair-raising drive along a narrow mountain road with extreme hairpins, but in fairness everyone treats this road and other drivers with respect.

The village of Masca is very picturesque, though it plays up its tourist appeal somewhat. The descent into the gorge is one of the most popular walks on the island, which takes you through this spectacular canyon full of unique vegetation and brings you out at the sea where you can take a "boat taxi" back to Los Gigantes or have a quick swim before trekking back up the gorge to the village.

The walk involves a bit of scrambling over rocks so the route isn't suitable for being with bad knees, hips, backs or ankles. And whilst the descent is fairly leisurely, if you don't get the boat taxi then the return up the gorge is very demanding.

Top tip, if you are travelling independently go early to beat the crowds and avoid the big organised tour groups which can cause a sort of traffic jam along the footpath. The Nashira boat service departs Masca beach at 13:30, 15:30 and 16:30 approx.

“Fantastic experience”
Reviewed May 9, 2013

This valley/gorge is lovely. I was so glad that I made the decision to go here. I have to mention that I went with an excursion - and I was glad I didn't go on my own (together with my friend)

First of all the guides are lovely, they know a lot, they make jokes so the whole experience is getting better, they guide you, and helps you through the valley. They know what they are doing, and they will not let you participate if you don't have good enough shoes or if you are in bad condition.

Second of all, the valley is so beautiful. I have been at Samaria gorge in Crete, and I liked this Masca valley better!

It is about 8 km, but it is not at all easy! Don't go if you are not fit or if you are not in a good healty condition.
But if you are, and you like nature GO THERE! it is a lovely experince - and really good exercise for the legs ;-)

“Fabulous trek to the sea”
Reviewed April 9, 2013

Difficult walk but work all the effort. Should wear proper walking boots due to terrain. It takes between 2 and 4 hours to complete and you should make sure you have booked a water taxi to pick you up on completion.

“stunning valley, great terror ride on the bus on death roads”
Reviewed April 8, 2013

takes some time to get up here but its worth it the view is fab and the story of it being a pirate hideaway is good aswell. if you are of the faint heart on difficult roads then be warnred i loved it but others were screaming, it was like being in a top gear challenge going up the switchback vertical drop roads to get there, its more deathy leaving but it was all handeled superbly by our driver who got a round of applause afterwards. great little bar/resaurant at the top. very scenic and worth the visit
