On our trip in Tenerife, we tried to visit most restaurants mentioned in the Michelin Guide that were close by. Some of the restaurants were really good (namely M.B, which was quite excellent), some were quite mediocre and then there was El Patio, which was in its own class -- in a negative way.

From the very first second we entered the restaurant, everything was a disappointment.

We had to wait in the lobby area for several minutes trying to get any of the staff guide us to our table. The problem wasn't they didn't notice us, many of them glanced at us when walking by, by no one thought it was their responsibility to make us feel welcome from the start.

After we had been finally escorted to our table, it became obvious that the restaurant was having problems with its staff. Some in particular were too busy to listen what we ordered. Instead, they just assumed they knew what we were saying and rushed forward. This seemed to be the case in other tables as well. The restaurant was quite full so some rush is understandable, but it really isn't an excuse for such a behavior.

As a result of this, especially our wine orders often got mixed and either only one of us or none of us got the drinks we ordered (be it a new bottle of water or more of their cava).

We ordered the menu dégustation as we hoped it would give a good display of what the restaurant thinks it is.

The food was confusing. The first amuse bouches tasted like dish water, but in a way that we were really unsure whether we liked them or not -- we were just confused. But when the first starters had been served, we looked at each other dumbfounded and after a small silence started laughing.

Going forward, we returned the main courses back as they were just plain bad. Too much of ingredients fighting with each other, tasting terrible.

When it was time for the dessert -- if I recall correctly, some sort of a creme caramel with cinnamon ice cream -- it sounded like they just couldn't fail it. How wrong we were. The structure, taste and presentation of the dessert was just terrible. I don't think I've ever had to stop eating a dessert due to bad taste in places as expensive as El Patio, but this was just so terrible that I'd rather drink up the rest of my bottled water and leave.

I don't know why we had so bad experience -- perhaps the chef was sick and someone with no vision nor competence had taken his place for the evening?

Nevertheless, there were better restaurants both in Costa Adeje region and on the island. They have a nice setting and they clearly are trying to do something nice, but the execution was lacking so badly that I could not recommend El Patio to anyone.

My wife and I always save one night on our vists to Tnerife for dinner here. The food is unusual and I had cuttlefish for the first time which was good. All in all the usual great dining experience but the prices have eased upa a bit and while this was always our most expensive dinner out the gap is widening with otehrs.

We’d clocked this place when we were wandering along the “Geranium Walk” and thought it would be good for a bit of a special foody treat. Situated in the grounds of the Jardin Tropical Hotel, it looked smart and its menu seemed a million miles away from the run of the mill touristy restaurants in the area. And we don’t mind spending big money on a great meal – dinner last year at Alain Roux’s Michelin 3 star Waterside Inn at Bray was over £150 a head. That was worth every penny. The El Patio is much cheaper, of course, but it isn’t as good value, unfortunately.

There wasn’t much of a welcome. In fact , there was nothing of a welcome. We were ignored by four members of staff at the entrance and it was only on button-holing one that the reservation book was checked for us and we were shown to a table. Not a great start to what the restaurant’s advertising describes as a “special luxurious evening”.

There was a good choice of bread on offer. And the freebie soup was an absolute belter – a light seafood broth with finely diced king prawns, peppers and mushrooms. Unfortunately, the food was downhill from there onwards. Lobster salad was described as coming with mini organic lettuce and a seaweed vinaigrette. Certainly there were some chunks of lobster but the organic lettuce was nothing more than some mixed leaves that may easily have come from a supermarket pack. The vinaigrette seemed nothing more than a normal vinaigrette – but there was some battered, deep fried greasy pieces of seaweed. It was something of a disappointment, as was the salmon salad, described as coming with “dilled Canarian cheese”. Well, it was some pieces of smoked salmon, wrapped around a tasteless mousse – much in the fashion that the supermarkets sell packs of “party food” at Christmas – and some of the salad leaves.

My main wasn’t too bad - a decent portion of monkfish, albeit somewhat overcooked. Also on the plate, a few cockles, a scattering of tiny vegetables, couple of tomatoes and a decent fishy/winey sauce. My partner’s plate was also better than OK, as far as it went. Sea bass, with a salt crust, with a lemon, wine and pine nut sauce. But no veg; no carb. The sort of plate that makes you wonder about getting a bag of chips on the way home.

Perhaps needless to say, we didn’t trouble them with dessert.

If you like fish you can't fail to love this place. Beautiful location overlooking the sea, fresh fish - if you love calamari you will be amazed by the portion size and quality and recommend the fish platter - so fresh. The staff were excellent too - Marcus in particular - really welcoming. Make you feel special!
