Looking for a last minute break from the British weather i came across Hotel Villa Vik after seeing the great reviews. I booked the hotel on the phone using the UK sales company which comes up on google. They did a better deal than booking direct and cheaper than all the last minute style sites. The Villa is only five minutes from the airport and the taxi worked out at ten euro including the tip, alot less than the recommended prebooking cab.The Villa itself is superb, spacious and clean. We wanted a relaxing and quiet few days and this is 'the' place to kick back. With only fourteen rooms you dont have to be up a six to get a sun bed by the pool, perfect. The pool in May wasnt heated and did take some getting into but also funny watching the other guests going for a dip! The four front of house staff could not have done more for us, doing everything possible to meet our needs. Dont forget its adults only aswell.
Ok, so the Hotel is five star, the staff are five star but, and here's the but, the food isnt. Sorry to say but the food was average quality and the menu more three star. You book your dinner table time each morning and the choice of food not great. Generally three startes, two mains (one meat dish / one fish dish), one main desert or fruit / icecream. Personally i dont eat most fish so that left me with one main and no choice. The wife also thought the menu very poor for this class of hotel. On Saturday for lunch the kitchen was closed and only a salad or sandwich (literraly just one sandwich on a plate) is simply not good enough especially as the Villa is aimed at people who want to stay round the pool and not do much. Breakfast is eggs and bacon along with the normal continental bit and bobs which was fine. Please please Vik Hotels....sort the food / menu.
Samll tip, if you want water, ask for a four and half litre bottle for your room, alot cheaper than the small bottles normally given. Oh, and no kettle in the bedroom. The bedroom was great, plenty of space, a sofa and nice bathroom, a little dark as some one else has mentioned but then the front door opens up onto the pool area, bliss.
As mentioned before this is not the hotel for you if you want 'lilos and sports bars'. Its in an area that is quiet and away from the tourists. Five minutes in a taxi to Arrecife (five euros with tip) and a lovely twenty minute walk along the promenade back.Arrecife has some nice shops and a good mix of food outlets and resturants including 'Lilium' which is well worth a visit. Play Honda is the other way and the walk is only ten minutes. Here there is a small shopping mall and some nice 'local' eateries, bowling alley and cinema (remember in Spanish though).
We went on a couple of 'last minute' excursions just to see the island a bit and thought they were very good. The Villa staff more than happy to book these for you.
To sum up, we had a truely great seven nights here, relaxed plenty, swam a little, met the lovely 'Ladies' (you know who you are :-)) and went for walks. Would we go again? Definately but next time we would go bed and breakfast and eat out. Thanks again to the staff.
