“Excellent Hotel, especially at current prices”
Reviewed July 25, 2013

This is a beautiful hotel in the Lanzarote capital and we had an amazing week there and got a good deal.

Rooms & facilities
It's got a lot of suites (more than double bedrooms) and we were upgraded to a large suite which, whilst it faced towards the town, still had side views up the coast both ways. The room had separate bedroom and sitting areas along with a large bathroom and entrance area. The pictures from others and the hotel illustrate the rooms well. There is a great spa with Turkish bath and pools etc. for 15 Euros for 2 hours. They also provide very reasonable massages and other spa treatments. Didn't try the top floor restaurant as we found so many local ones (see other reviews for these). Went the café a few times on the top floor with great views and a good selection of snacks and drinks at reasonable prices. The 2nd floor pool area had 2 major events on whilst we were there and we were offered free entry both times, having great nights (lots of locals came to see the band one night paying 9 euros each).

Food
Only stayed B&B but the choice at breakfast was huge with a large range of freshly made food (pancakes, churros, omelettes to order, eggs, bacon) as well a huge range of meats, cheeses, breads, fruits, cereals and so on. For me, the cava and freshly squeezed orange juice and smoothies are the differences that mark it out above a 4 star hotel. Snacks in the café were very good value.

Any downsides?
I could see the main downside at the hotel could be for those that like to sunbathe around a pool and use sunbeds. There is very limited room within the hotel grounds to sunbathe outside and the covered pool area, whilst great at night, tended to be very warm during the day. The few beds on the terrace filled up quickly. Personally this was no issue for me as it is so near one of the most beautiful and quiet beaches I've visited on Lanzarote with golden sand and very clear sea. The beach has no sunbeds but its very quiet until the locals come down around 4pm each day. When staying in Puerto Del Carmen in previous years, we've cycled to this beach a few days, as it's far prettier and better for swimming.

Arrecife:
Arrecife isn't a tourist town, but that doesn't mean it isn't beautiful with lots to offer. You can see in the capital that one hotel had closed and some redevelopment work has been halted, obviously due to the economic issues. It is a working town and, in my opinion, has a lot to offer above places like Puerto Del Carmen. There are less tourist bars, but a huge choice of restaurants and enough shops to go shopping for a few hours. If you want an endless (and I mean endless) choice of very similar perfume shops rather than the 6 or 7 in Arrecife or more English bars or to play some crazy golf, buses take between 10-20 minutes to Puerto Del Carmen, depending which end you are visiting, for 1.70 euros per person. They go every 20 minutes from the station at the other end of the beach. The few nights we went to clubs in PDC, a taxi home was about 15 euros.

Conclusion:
It was quiet when we stayed and I imagine this explains why we got a week there with about 40% discount (and were upgraded). Honestly, at full price, I would give it 4 stars, but with the discounted price, upgrade and just general value for money, this has to get 5/5 from us. We will definitely stay here again and are making plans to go back.

Stayed last week as part of a last minute holiday and had a great time... and I'd actually recommend this hotel. It's highlight is the 2nd floor pool area.. protected from the wind, great couches, good bar and fantastic for relaxing. The hotel itself is very nice and I think earns it's 5 star. The town of Arrecife isn't fancy... that's why you get this hotel at a good price but frankly none of Lanzarote is fancy and all beaches are average. Arrecife is the capital and it is run down however we found some good tapas bars (for locals and not tourists), a little shopping and gelati shops... that's all we wanted and it was there. We visited Playa Blanca and Peurto del Carmen and we were so pleased we weren't staying there... british, more expensive for less quality and restaurants who were out for the season and didn't care about their reputation or the quality of the food. Service was good, everything clean and neat and well decorated. It was 100 percent occupancy when were there but you wouldn't know it... not crowded, plenty of room, tables, chairs, couches. They have entertainment a few nights of week which was a fun change. Food in the buffet was excellent .. both breakfast and dinner. No kids activities but that was fine.. ours are old enough that if you give them a pool, they will have fun.. and the beach is right there. Also meant that the hotel wasn't overrun with children.

We've stayed at the Gran Hotel several times but not since last October. It is still great value. Big, spacious rooms (worth paying extra for a sea view, too). There is now a much improved breakfast service but, sadly, the quality of coffee from the machine let's things down - I'm sure a 5* hotel could do better. Which it does in other areas. The 17th floor bar is just great for relaxing and very well priced - as is the restaurant with its revamped menu. We enjoyed some very innovative food and incredible value for a hotel in this class. There is a nice relaxed ambience that bodes well for relaxation. Must mention some of the great hardworking staff in the bar, restaurant and at breakfast. And thank you to Olga on Reception for her warm welcome and for remembering us - we thought that was very special.

Room Tip: A room with a sea view is worth the extra cost. And the 17th floor restaurant is great if you like g...

Other travellers have already commented on the fact that this hotel is just in the wrong place. It's a lovely building with great views but the area of the town is rundown and parts of the hotel are mothballed - the Tapas bar restaurant is closed including the terrace. The Bar at the top could also be a lot better - with great views the decor didn't live up to it with plastic chairs and tables it felt like a corner cafe than a trendy ;ounge bar. Rooms are fine and you couldn't really fault the breakfast spread. The reception area is cold and impersonal though the staff were all smiles. Outside the hotel a pedestrianised area by the sea was damaged and there was a lot of graffiti on the walls. Our room was a good size, though i can't say it was quiet as there was building work going on in the Spa area below us, however we were out most of the day. Not sure the hotel can pull up the area around it so unless the town do something i can't see this place surviving, shame really.

Room Tip: We were on the 2nd floor and it was a bit noisy so i would say higher the better and you get the vie...

Stayed bed and breakfast for a week.
Breakfasts are very substantial, even include champagne Buck's Fizz!
Great views from 15th floor, probably the most comfortable mattresses we have ever slept on.
Majority of staff very friendly and helpful. Only irritant were the lifts, which are completely random as to when they turn up, and stop at floors where no-one is waiting. Seem to have minds of their own!
Good base for exploring whole island.
Lovely little lagoon minutes up the road, many excellent restaurants. Taxi rank outside, and bus station 10 minutes' walk, from where you can tour whole island.
Feel that Playa Blanca is the resort well-worth visiting, not spoilt like Puerto del Carmen, which is turning into Blackpool. If you visit Playa Blanca, take the "Chillout Yacht" for a couple of hours' cruising around the coast relaxing to Ibizan chill music.
Do make the time to visit Timanfaya National Park, marvellous.
There is a small market near the lagoon in Arrecife on Saturday mornings.
Hotel is good, comfortable base to return to. You will never lose it, as it can be seen in the distance from every location!

We stayed in Arrecife Gran Hotel and Spa on the 10th June-17th after finding a great deal for a 5* hotel, the hotel is a five minute drive away from the airport which is convenient. The hotel over all was great, clean, towels cleaned everyday and friendly staff. We were on the 15th floor which had amazing views over Arrecife which could be viewed from the bar on the 17th floor. The breakfast was good which a lot of choice as stated previously. However as shown in a photo for the hotel there is no outside pool, this may not bother people but we found it a slight problem. There was only a couple of outside sun loungers, were it was very windy but most of them didn't come out in the sun until gone 1 o'clock.
Overall the hotel was very nice, maybe not 5* but worth the price if you can get a good deal.

The area of Arrecife however was not ideal, after reading reviews before we left and looking at the map, arrecife is one of the most built up areas in Lanzarote so we didn't worry about the area being quiet. You get the idea that in arrecife that previously it used to be busy but not the area around the hotel is run down with graffiti and missing floor boards on the prom. There is a supermarket and a few shops but it lacks any restaurants. Almost every night we got a bus to Puerto De Carmen (1.30 euro each way) for food in the night as there is much more choice, if eating in the area would recommend the tapas restaurant and the pizza place around the corner (they however didn't speak a word of english).
Being a young couple (20s) we weren't happy staying and eating within the hotel every night, it may be ideal for some people who don't want to leave the hotel but the area was a disappointment for us. However over all had a lovely holiday.

ps - Anyone thinking of going to Lanzarote it is VERY windy, we were unaware of this.
