“Playa de Las Canteras”
Reviewed March 11, 2013

If you want winter warmth, glorious sandy beach, bar, cafe, restaurant facilities along the Paseo (promenade) and hotels or self-catering apartments within easy walking distance, and enjoy daytime temps of 26-32 C and like a stroll in the evening at a temperature of 19 C at 9pm; stop by a cafe for a coffee and nightcap at a table overlooking the beach - this place is for you.

Only 4 hours flying time from London, and a very cosmopolitan mix of tourists but, reassuringly, mostly Spanish, you can't be shy about people-watching: about two thirds of the ladies go topless on the beach.

The Paseo is well lit from dusk 'till dawn and the elegant lighting sweeps over the beach, too.

Las Canteras is located in the North of the City, on the opposite side to the island to where the tourist cruise liners dock in the Port of Las Palmas. Indeed, a little known fact for the day tourist is that it is only a short walk of about a quarter of a mile from the Port to Las Canteras, straight through the City from one side of the island to the other!

The beach (La Playa) de Las Canteras is about 1.3 Km long, and roughly crescent-shaped, and was formed with a coral reef over (an estimated) 100,000 years ago. The reef runs parallel to the beach for about two-thirds of its length, creating a protective barrier from the Atlantic sea and almost lagoon-like calm waters off the beach for safe swimming in the clearest warm waters among the abundant fish!

Average water temps throughout the year are 20-21C. At the southern end of the beach, beyond the protective barrier of the reef, the Atlantic rollers come crashing in and is the favored spot for the surf-boarders.

My wife and I have been coming here for the last 9 winters and always enjoy the atmosphere as well as the facilities - and go home with a great tan! But it does get busy at weekends with all the locals attending; a good indicator I think.

“Hot hot hot”
Reviewed March 6, 2013

The beach is great and it was 25 degrees for a couple of days, not bad for February. The restaurants along the beach are as you would expect a bit more expensive but what a great view

“Look for the east corner..”
Reviewed March 4, 2013

The beach and boulevard is a mingling place for locals and tourists. Soft clean warm sand, and a lively beach tennis area. The east side of the beach is the best; for sun and atmosphere.
