We visited the crater during a recent stop on a cruise, when we had rented a car for the day.

Like most locations on this island it is an easy drive to the top of the crater from where you not only have outstanding views of the crater itself, but also looking back over Gran Canaria.

The crater is 1,000m in diameter, 200m deep and situated 569m above sea level. It is impossible to imagine the volcanic eruption that produced this wonder of nature.

Make an effort to get there.

The drive is easy, especially if have done some of the hairier drives on GC. We took our 5 and 7 year old daughters on a walk all the way around the crater rim. The guidebooks say this is also mucho pelligro, but it isn't. We held their hands in a couple spots just in case, and they thought some of the more gravelly ascents tedious, but it was NBD. Visiting Bandama and not circling the crater or descending to the crater floor would be a shame as the nature in this area is really nice. Wonderful plantlife and lots of birds and lizards. Recommended for anyone with a heart and a descent pair of shoes.

Awsome geological landscape, don't forget your camera. Best seen on a guided tour so you get some information on how this volcanic landscape came about!

We liked the excellent views from the "Pico" as well as the views of the "Caldera". Worth to go, even if the road is not the best of the island!

The red walk is one of three walks you can do in bandama. Don't do it in the heat of the day, as it can get very sunny and there is little shadow on the way. Wear good shoes, because downhill the road can be a bit slippery and therefor tricky. Bring enough water and sunscreen, and you will be down and up in 1,5 hours, with nice view and lots of lizzards.
