Mixed feelings about some of the other reviews on here. For the cost of the trip it would be nice to get a bacon roll when u get there then the filled roll later on. But all on all I had a great day the lake and the scenery are amazing. The fishing was slow but was given a fly rod to catch some bass which was great because I've never caught on a fly rod before and never caught a bass before so to catch a few was great. Between 3 of us we had 3 runs and one lovely scaled never been caught before 22lb mirror. All I would say to Dave is when I come again the drive up and down from the lake needs to be slower because it did make me feel really ill.

Just got back from a 5 night trip on Lake Chira through Costa Del Carping/Carping Gran Canaria run by Dave and Alison. As arranged I was picked up from the airport and driven to the lake, I'd opted for the guided fishing option which was well worthwhile and I can't recommend it enough - Steve was my guide, he knows the lake inside and out and had us on fish throughout my stay (we caught within 3 hours of setting up on the first night). The fishing was excellent; between us we had 28 fish up to 36lb, all the fish previously uncaught, in great condition with huge rudders that make for strong fights. The average size of the fish caught was probably 23lb but probably 12 of the fish caught were over 25lb. We moved round the lake 4 times by boat to keep on the fish and try and tempt some larger fish from the deeps, we slept under the stars but due to the heat and forest fires on neighbouring islands cooking on the bank was out of the question. Thankfully Dave offered up one of the apartments which meant that I could go back there for a cuppa, shower and something to eat whenever I wanted which was perfect.

Just looking at some of the other comments posted I can't disagree enough and I'd really question their motives for posting - suggesting that you'll catch from the bank casting chickpeas into 150+ acres of water is a nonsense. The baits are boated out to a) determine the bottom being fished over b) appreciate the depth of water being fished in and c) to get a spread of bait around the hookbait. The chances of catching a fish from a cast bait (let alone 3...) I would say are miniscule.

On the price of the trip, it's €65 for a defined trip of a set duration; that includes transfers, a light lunch (which to me is a sandwich, don't get that gripe) bait and equipment hire. Compare that to the cost of a sea fishing trip, which by the way would also give you a sandwich for lunch, and it's excellent value.

The last review implies 'carp at any cost' - he doesn't explain that comment but again I didn't see anything to suggest that. There are large beanie mats and carp cradles to deal with banked fish, all of the fish we caught were very well treated (most dealt with in the water as the banks are rocky) and none of the fish were marked/damaged at all. Baits are rowed out, naturally where boats are allowed on large lakes that's the most effective way to get a bait in the water in the right place.

Personally I really enjoyed the trip, it's raw, it's unspoilt, it's you against the fish not other anglers in a fantastic location with a great chance of catching something truly special. I think it's good value for money, if you understand what you're paying for, how you'll be fishing and you accept it's called fishing for a reason (raher than catching) then you can't fail to be impressed by the set-up and the whole experience.

This is a tricky review to write because there is a good chance you will catch a carp or two but from my experience the enjoyment of your day could be ruined by the feeling that you have just been well and truly ripped off.

The day I went it was hot (no surprise there) but there were NO cold drinks, only warm coke or tap water (fortunately I'd taken some bottled water of my own) and the 'light lunch' consisted of a filled bread roll purchased for a few Euros from a local shop (don't skip breakfast before you go!!). In addition there was virtually no choice of bait because the tiger nuts had apparently mysteriously disappeared and boilies were not worth using because the turtles get to them before the carp. Fortunately I had pre-boiled some chick peas from the supermarket which is what I caught my fish on. The 'guide' really didn't do anything to help apart from rowing the rigs way out into the lake which I really don't think was necessary since the 3 fish I caught all came as a result of casts from the bank towards showing fish. Also, be aware that for your 65 Euro your day's fishing will end at 5:00 pm..

So, if you're a fanatical angler prepared to catch at any cost you should do OK but be warned, Costa del Carping is all about making money and your enjoyment of the day is definitely of secondary importance..
