We rented a small house for 3 weeks in Vegueta just off Santo Domingo Plaza and thoroughly enjoyed the experience of peaceful urban living among locals. A lot of the main historical attractions are in Vegueta or the nearby district of Triana. Just walking around the small streets in the area of the cathedral gives a real good impression of Las Palmas 400 or so years ago.

Then you have a good chance to like it. It is still probably the best part of Palmas but to us it it was not that inspiring. Just another old quarter... Looking back I remember firstly casa de Colon and statues of dogs at plaza Santa Ana.

Final point - do not look for Vegueta somewhere close to Cantaras beach, it is very far from that newer center of Las Palmas... Better to take a taxi or a bus than to go by foot.

This is a beautiful, old part of Las Palmas that is like going back in time. There are great typical Canarian restaurants with fresh fish, paella and everything else you would see in a Canarian home. The area has the Christopher Columbus museum, the Guanche Museum as well as the beautiful Cathedral. At night the area comes alive with the young adults of the city. A visit to Las Palmas without going to Vagueta would be a sin!

I was impressed with the restoration work on this old part of the city. The little side streets and the preserved buildings look lovely. Everything is very clean.

The old area is largely pedestrianised and easy to wander round, with plenty of restaurants and bars
