Santa Catalina Hotel
Reviewed April 13, 2013

We stayed at Santa Catalina for an extended week and enjoyed the comfort and the ambience of this Canarian palace. The hotel is tucked away in a vast park a block from the coastal highway, between the charming old Vegueta and the elegant Triana in the South and the new downtown quarters and the Las Canteras beach in the North. Despite appearances there are actually several good restaurants in the vicinity - not least in the yacht harbour - although the hotel's own lunch and dinner restaurant is a well-known waterhole for gourmets and the local elite. Most things are top-notch at the Santa Catalina - beautiful architechure, professional reception team, spacious rooms, excellent spa and fitness facilities...

Having said that, we find some minor improvements still to be needed:
- Improved wifi capacity, too slow as is
- Refurbishment of the outdoor pool area - vast empty areas of concrete and plastic chairs does not convey a 5* feeling
- Large television set in the beautiful old bar - please move it elsewhere
- It is time to install new elevators

Room Tip: Look for the rooms at the 1st floor with the large terraces!

Very nice staff in the reception and we felt very welcome when we checked in. We only stayed one night so we did not get to use the pool or spa. We had a nice superior room with a large balcony and think the hotel has got lots of charm. The surroundings are nice with the park in the back and the palms trees in front with a view to the sea from our room.

We only had a snack at the bar and did not eat dinner in the hotel. The waiter looked like he did not like his job, but the club sandwich was good.

The breakfast room had a high ceiling and lots of light and everything you need, but for a five star hotel we thought maybe there was a chief to make a fresh omelet or other hot food. A little minus for the bacon and scrambled eggs which were not the best, but overall with fresh fruit, lots of pastry and other cold food we were happy.

The bathroom could use a renovation, but were nice and clean. We would recommend this hotel because of the charm and other qualities.

Would stay again, because there are so many hotels that looks the same everywhere and we appreciate the qualities of this hotel.

Room Tip: Rooms in the back are possibly more quiet, but rooms in front has a view to the sea.

We found this a very comfortable, spacious, well-maintained, quiet hotel of quality with attentive staff, a classy bar, a lovely pool, and in a great setting - a fine city park extends in front and behind the hotel. The topping on the cake is breakfast: fresh fruit, breads, cheeses, eggs, omelettes, cold meats, cakes, cereals, nuts, fruit juices, cava -all you could want and more - with just a little variation every day. Perhaps the restaurant is expensive (and there are not a lot of eating places nearby) - but the city is full of great places to eat, so we never tried it. Perhaps some extras are expensive - but apart from enjoying the odd cocktail, we couldn't think of anything extra we needed, and the wifi was free and worked well. For some, the disadvantage of the Santa Catalina will be its location. It's not right on the beach - but their shuttle bus will take you there. It's not in the historic centre - a few minutes away by bus or taxi. I tend to find fancy hotels rather off-putting, but I couldn't fault the Santa Catalina, and if we return to Las Palmas we won't waste time looking for a better hotel.

This 19th century luxury hotels looks as good as ever .. as long as you dont look too close. While the garden paths are swiped at least one a day the railing on our balcony could have used a slew of paint .. 10 years ago or so. Rooms and especially bathrooms are a bit crammed .. as they were back then. You can easily hear what your neighbours on all sides are up to. Breakfast is really good and so is the pool area and the surprisingly spaceous underground garage. Did not try the spa. Wireless internet connection is ok. All kinds of extra serrvices are super expensive. Eat elsewhere, like at Segundo Muelle just down below the pool and spa area.

Staff were excellent - helpful and friendly. Contrary to comments about shabbiness of hotel decor, we felt that this added to the charm of this fantastic hotel. Highly recommended hotel, and hope to return soon!

This was a brilliant hotel with excellent staff from information desk to the cleaners, our rooms were cleaned to an excellent standard every day,the breakfast room was an eye opener each day with a fantastic selection of food on display and so nicely presented. There were a few things my wife and I disliked such as main meals in the evening so called ( ponce food ) with very small portions and at great expense, We ended up eating outside the hotel where you were satisfied with your food,we also used the hotel bar which also disappointed us due to half measures and again the price was ridiculous and costly,1 issue also was the spa and pool you had to go outside the front of the hotel with a robe on or change at the poolside other than these items it was a wonderful hotel and stay.
