“Historic hotel in need of makeover”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 6, 2013

Friendly service, clean rooms, convenient free parking in underground garage, ok spa/gym/pool/sunbathing facilities. Rooms are drab and in bad need of a total makeover. Beds are hard and uncomfortable. Breakfast is nice enough, but nothing special, and the choice of fruits and vegetables is disappointing. The location inside the Doramas park is peaceful and beautiful, but the local area around the hotel is boring with nothing much going on at all. You will depend on taxi (ca. 4-5 EUR) to go to the Vegueta/Triana area or the Canteras beach - walking takes 20-30 minutes along streets that are not particularly pedestrian friendly. Despite the shortcomings, the hotel still maintains a certain grandeur and style, and seems to be frequented mainly by middle-aged to elderly, well-to-do locals and foreigners. If you prefer a party atmosphere, or to wear your flip-flops and bermudas everywhere, this may not be the hotel for you.

This is a lovely world charm hotel in Las Palmas , we have just come back from this hotel it is perfect for a few days loved the ambience and history , you really feel the past here lovely terrace The staff are very nice and could not be more helpful and friendly. Be warned the pool is not heated and is cold in the winter months.
The rooms are old but that's the charm. We would definitely stay here again.
Las Palmas is really up and coming city also the locals are friendly food is cheap real Spain , and it has a top beach in Las canteras.

We walked by this hotel while on a city tour. I really wish that I would have had the time to go back and hang out there. Our tour guide told us that this is a historic hotel. It was quite the landmark. The parks both in front and behind the hotel are perfect places to relax. When I come back to town next year, I will definitely find time to hang out in the cafe here. If I were staying in town, I would stay here - what a great location!

Recently spent a week grabbing some Winter sun in Las Palmas. Our third stay at the Santa Catalina in as many years. Rooms still comfortable if perhaps a bit dated - be sure to ask for a room with balcony or terrace which feel much 'roomier'. Our biggest gripe was over the breakfast buffet which has been pared back since our last visit - less options for a hot breakfast and a rather boring/samey selection of fruits and continental breakfast offerings. The pool is still a great place to while away hours of sunny days but again, the pool bar menu is tired and quite limited. All the same we love staying here, it's really the only option for chilled out faded graciousness in what can sometimes be a gritty town and in fairness the room rates are reasonable. We do however hope they improve the food offering!

Room Tip: Ask for a room with balcony or terrace.

stayed here from the 21st to 28th november, 1st time to Gran Canaria..what a fantastic hotel with great history, the staff were really helpful especially on reception. the breakfast was lovely with a great choice, free champagne every morning! our room was great, recommend getting your own drinks for your room as the only down side is no coffee facilities but a fully stocked drinks cabinet, Had a great meal in the hotels restaurant the tuna tarta and the chocolate souffle were amazing. but local restaurants are only a cab ride away and would strongley recommend the Marinera at las canteras, great location and amazing fish and steaks! the swimming pools and leisure facilities were good. and great location for the marina and restaurants. will hopefully be back the same time next year!

Room Tip: over look the swimming pool area, the suites on the 1st floor are lovely with a great balcony

The hotel was one of the most glamourous I visited during my stay in Gran Canaria and the staff were helpful but overall attention to detail was lax and it doesn't compare with other 5 star hotels I've stayed at. The breakfast is very good.
On arrival I wasn't happy with my room and reception were happy to upgrade
The hotel is located near a couple of the better Las Palmas restaurants but a 20 minute walk from the beach or the old town and there wasn't much to do nearby. I did though enjoy the local park (turn right out of the front door) and the bistro next door at the next door museum.
My main complaints were:
To visit the pools you have to walk out of the hotel past the parked cars down the road
The pool was closed on Sunday and randomly on Thursday evening although a class was advertised
There is nowhere in the hotel to sit and enjoy the sun other than by the pool
The main course at the restaurant the one time I ate there (piri piri cod) was truly revolting

Room Tip: If you're travelling alone upgrade to a twin. The single rooms are dark cupboards at the back of...

All staff were always helpful & friendly, the building is beautiful & great location placed in the centre of the main attractions of Las Palmas. However, this is not a 5 star hotel. Room service is slow & unreliable. There are no tea/coffee making facilities in the room. The food in the bar was tasteless & poor quality. Breakfast was deceiving in that it looked impressive but of no substance, virtually the same everyday and the cooked selection was limited. The room (240) was spacious but very little natural light from a small side window with a horrible view. We were really upset that children under 16 are not permitted to use the indoor pool which is the only reason we choose this hotel so that our 2 year old could enjoy swimming as the outdoor pool was too cold. In summary: this was a very disappointing hotel.
