“The soul alone worth experiencing ”
Reviewed November 14, 2013 via mobile

We were there for lunch only. Sat near the bar where an incredibly charming man was working making coffees and drinks singing and whistling his favourite tunes. The bolognese we ordered was not up to standard, and after he realised that due to half empty plates, the replacement meals were ordered. He chatted us up and offered his "cortado special" together with a brief history of the place. In the end, the check was only for water and the second meal and even after insisting on paying for the coffee he wouldn't have any of it. Really felt like we were in typical Spanish establishment with no tourists around. Highly recommended, even with not so good food.

A lovely part of Las Palmas with it's own little bit of history, supposedly the place where Franco stayed and made his final plans prior to the start of the civil war. Beer and sandwiches were good too!

The Hotel Madrid is an institution in Las Palmas as it is supposed to have been where Franco stayed immediately prior to leaving for the mainland and the start of the civil war.
It is now a well established hotel but can not comment on that as we only ever ate there or enjoyed a refreshment in the sunshine watching the world go by. In the heart of the old town with a large pavement area where tables and chairs spill out and provide seating outdoors under the shade of some palm trees.
Good selection on the 3 course set menu for 10/12 euros complete with beer or wine. Very much local fare, well cooked and served by excellent friendly and helpful staff. Well worth a visit and feel like one of the "locals".

Room Tip: Can't vouch for rooms as we only ever used the bar/restaurant

Handsome building on attractive largely unspoilt square (rare in Las Palmas), used by locals as well as visitors, much of the authentic decor is retained. The cafe restaurant has something of a Cafe de Flore/Deux Magots atmosphere. (Perhaps a few too many repro retro posters in the dining room.) We did not stay there but enjoyed a very good goat stew off the reasonably priced menu of the day. This menu stops at a certain point during the afternoon. Unfortunately the next day we went back, but the service was so bad we simply walked out. My effective lack of Spanish may have contributed to this, but the waitress seemed to go out of her way to be as unhelfpul as possible. The second day I was wearing a tie (before going to the opera) and I wondered whether this was the reason why the waitress attempted to charge significantly more for a bottle of wine than (a) the price on the menu and (b) the price we had paid the day before! Nevertheless this place would be on my "must do" list of places to visit in Las Palmas. (The service the day before was excellent.)

What a lovely place to have a drink or brunch. Outside terrace is a bless, when the weather is nice. Drinks and snacks are ok, service friendly. Gets busy on lunch and dinner times, mainly with locals, which is a good sign.

Service:
The staff where all friendly and helpsome and the service where really high compared to the very fair price of the room.

Location:
If you want to live in the historical part of Las Palmas and close to the shopping area and local area with lovely restaurants the location is perfect! If you want to stay by the beach it is not. But we really loved the location at the most beautiful square in Las Palmas.

Shared area:
The hotel is filled with history and charm. A very lovely old style hotel keeped with original furniture and charm. The outside area is really great! Great food & a very poulare place to eat by the locals! Really authentic spanish.

The room
We booked a room with balcony with view over the square. The view was awesome and the room had the authentic charm from the past that we had hoped for. It is not luxury but that was not what we where looking for either by choosing this hotel. Instead we looked for a hotel that had a history to tell and everything at this hotel made it a special place.

Yes the bathroom smelled a bit but it is also an old hotel, but it was clean! If this hotel was updated with modern ammenities lots of the original charm would fade away. So liked it as it was. Only thing we could have wished for was some airconditioning.

Cleaning:
Room was clean :)

Conclusion:
Great value for the money and lots of charm & history. We will warmly recommend this place if you like the historical feeling, location near the historical sites but dont expect luxury. Remember to compare it to the price. I would say just the location alone is worth the money you pay! We will definately recommend this hotel.

If you want to experience the best in town ambience, convenience, history, friendly enviroment, culture and confort, I was there experiencing real life in Las Palmas, Tell Paco I sent you you will be treated above any expectations. It will be fun, historic as staying in a friend's home. I will be back in April, my room is waiting for me overlooking the square. I will never forget.

Room Tip: View over the square where the beautiful ladies gather
