We spent two nights here, after coming on a few trips to eat lunch only. The restaurant/bar is extremly popular, so the plaza is full of people on Saturday night. Not good if you want to sleep early and have a room facing the plaza. But perfect if you want to party. We had a lovely balcony facing the plaza and it was beautiful.
The room was large and very old style, of course. They didn't have breakfast, so we went and bought some stuff and were given plats and cutlery to use in room by the staff (we had to eat very early).
The location is good, smack in the city and a lot of shopping and restaurants nearby. You can eat at their own restaurant of course, set lunch is good value. Also, the two restaurants on either side on the plaza are also nice.
The city center of Las Palmas is not touristy at all and it is quite a genuine experience to stay here.

We stumbled on this iconic hotel by accident, and had the most amazing lunch time experience of our whole trip to Gran Canaria. Slow food and charming service, felt like a local - luckily we were quite smartly dressed! Don't bother if you are a vegetarian - veggie soup had hunks of ham hock in it! - but fab experience overall. Not expensive, and would recommend modern art gallery (free) just up the road from cathedral. Beautiful decor, fascinating photographs, ceramic tiles and artwork on all surfaces... Highly recommend for a visit even if you r staying elsewhere.

We spent a couple of nights in Las Palmas in January and stayed in the fantastic Hotel Madrid. Beautiful architecture from the outside - painted a sunny yellow, with white shutters & wrought iron balconies, overlooking a pretty square. Inside, the decor has faded a bit and there are no mod cons, however it has bundles of charm and the staff are friendly, particularly if you make the effort to speak a few words of Spanish. Located in the old part of the city, very close to the cathedral. Thoroughly recommended.

Room Tip: Ask for a room overlooking the square,

We had the meal of the day at lunchtime - excellent value for money - 10euros for 3 courses including a drink. We ordered two meals and there was enough for us and our two young children. Friendly and helpful waiters, and a lovely view over Plaza Cairasco all makes this a lovely spot for lunch. There's also a childrens playground in the Plaza.

Classic old spanish hotel, apparantly unchanged, except for the bathrooms and TV, since Franco stayed there in 1936. (Ask for his old room, number 3). Somewhat eccentric management. Beautiful architecture. Its a tourist attraction in its own right and you can sit on your balcony overlooking the square and be photographed by other tourists. Bang in the heart of the old town. No a.c. trouser presses or any of that. Affordable. Go now before someone turns it into a boutique hotel at 3 times the price and with half the style.
