Owner description: Discover the lost industrial heritage of the Apedale Valley and the history of the surrounding area when you visit this unique attraction. We are located in the beautiful Apedale Community Country Park, North Staffordshire, in an area that was once an industrial powerhouse. At weekends and Bank Holidays we offer tours of an authentic drift mine. Mine tours run on the hour from 11am until the last tour at 3pm. Tours cost £6 for adults and £4 for children (over 5 only) and senior citizens. Group bookings may also be made for schools and organisations etc. Please enquire via our website or at our Reception Desk. Our museum is also open at weekends and Bank holidays, plus several week days. There you can learn about the industries and history of Apedale and the local area. There will usually be a guide on hand who will be happy to answer any questions that you may have. There are several quiz sheets for children of all ages to have fun discovering the artifacts and information in the museum. These are sited on a table in the Roman section and available free of charge. Entry to the museum is free, although we'd appreciate it if you dropped a donation in our red box! The cafe is open every day, so even if you are just passing, you can come in for a cuppa [and a warm!] or to try some North Staffordshire Oatcakes, a speciality of the Potteries. We look forward to seeing you and/or your family and friends soon!

“Learned a lot, great fun & value”

Superb attraction. Understated and excellent.

Knowledgable guides with genuine enthusiasm for the job - very friendly people.

Took our teenagers (16/19) who were both thrilled with the mine tour.

Cafe was good - lovely cuppa and we broke our Oatcake cherry.

Had a ride on the little steam train next door.

All-in-all a good few hours of family fun.

Younger children will either love it or panic in the mine - it is dark and a bit risky.

You need to be fit and agile to do the mine tour but the museum and train etc would be manageable if not.

Highly recommended.

Glad you had a great time at Apedale and hope you visit again to sample more oatcakes! You make a good point about younger children although the vast majority take it in their stride and really enjoy it. In fact I'd say that more adults shy away from going underground than children! We do have a lower age limit of 5 years old for the mine tours as it isn't suitable for the very young.

“Today at Apedale”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 14, 2013

Went to Apedale this afternoon to the steam gala, so there were extra things going on, my husband loved a little petrol driven plough which was the size of a smallish lawn mower, we went on the steam train ( I struggled to get on as the steps were quite high and I have short legs!), saw Black Dog Molly Morris dancers and had a trip round the museum which has exhibits varying from different bricks to miners tools and acetaline torches - great for interesting industrial archaeology. There is a drift mine which has guided tours. We did not go down it today as we have been on the tour before, but it does give an authentic feel of how people used to work in the mines, although not good if you are claustraphobic. Good to meet up with friends. Had a couple of cheese oatcakes because we got there late and they had finished cooking for the day. Finished with a nice walk in the sun- a very pleasant afternoon.

“Very interesting-unusual”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 14, 2013

We visited during the Centre's annual gala, for which there was an entry fee of £6 per adult; I can't say whether or not there is s charge at other times. Highlight is a narrow gauge railway, but there is also a fine museum largely devoted to coal-mining ; the remains of Apedale Colliery can be visited, but we lacked time. There was a small model railway exhibition, with some first class layouts.

Hi, Thanks for your review. The entry fee was just for the railway gala. At other times there's no entry fee, but normal train fairs apply. The Heritage Centre museum is free, but there is a charge for mine tours of course.

“So Much More Than We Were Expecting”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 3, 2013

We just spent a really enjoyable day at the Apedale Heritage Centre and with ages ranging from 5-70 it is challenging to find something that keeps everyone entertained.

The Museum is so much more interesting than we thought it would be. It kept our children occupied (with fun children's trails) for over an hour. The Museum attendant was very helpful and friendly and it was very relaxed and informative.

We also took a trip on the railway - although the trip is quite short and the view not particularly special. We are not big train enthusiasts and will probably give this a miss when we visit next time.

The cafe is great - reasonable food at reasonable prices with friendly and helpful service.

However, the highlight of our visit was the trip down the mine. Our guide was an ex-miner who knew so much about all types of mining. He took the time to talk to us about his time in the mines and our kids were very excited about putting the hard-hats on and descending into the depths of the seam mine. It really gives you an appreciation of how hard this work really was. I would recommend warm clothing and stout shoes for this part of your visit.

We just wish we had more time because there are loads of fantastic walks in this area and we would have loved to have more time in the museum.

I would really recommend this place for a visit.
