Parador de la Gomera

We decided to treat ourselves to a night at the 'luxury' Parador Hotel at the start of our 2 week holiday in La Gomera, the rest of which was to be in a self-catering apartment in Playa Santiago. It was a disastrous start to a wonderful 2 weeks. We got off the ferry in the evening and there were no taxis anywhere. To cut a long story short, we ended up having to pull/carry our heavy cases up the steep high hill to The Parador. We arrived sore, hungry and exhausted and too late to eat. The room was nice and there were complimentary toileteries but what we could have done with was a complimentary bottle of drinking water and coffee making facliies and a biscuit. There was of course a horribly expensive minibar. We found the bar downstairs, but it took forever to find a member of staff to help serve us a very overpriced beer. There was NO Wifi in our room. Next morning we saw that we had a wonderful view and the grounds were beautiful. Breakfast was self service and unexciting. It was very expensive and there was only enough weak coffee (with hot milk) for 1.5 cups. The orange juice was watered down. The staff at reception were nice.
When we arrived later at our lovely apartment in Santiago, waiting for us was not only a complimentary bottle of water but also a complimentary bottle of very drinkable wine. The big posh so called luxury hotels are such poor value. They have stopped trying, whereas the little places still try really hard to make your stay as good as possible. I would not recommend The Parador and The taxi service in San Sebastian is appaling. Perhaps the Hotel could arrange to meet it's guests and provide transport from the ferry for them.

We spent two nights here last week. We absolutely loved it. Previous comments regarding the position and views are spot on. We particularly loved the gardens (so many little places to sit) and the whole place is so wonderfully calm. We also loved the inner courtyard which we used to access wifi and to have a drink following dinner. We received a lovely welcome from a very friendly lady who gave us a quick tour en route to our room. We have only stayed in one Parador before near Madrid and we found the staff much friendlier here. The meal in the restaurant was good (bit pricey but we knew this would be the case) and largely was what we had expected following reviews of other paradors. Maitre d' was very pleasant and made us feel very welcome. Good choice of wines too. Our one criticism was that there wasn't anyone manning the hotel bar (both times we visited) but the pool bar was manned. Staff did seem busy so maybe this was why. Our room overlooked a courtyard garden and was excellent. We couldn't fault it. I so hope that we will be able to stay here again soon.

Wonderful position with commanding views of San Seb and sea. Aire of faded grandeur, in a good way. Fantastic pool - cold as unheated but that's a plus point for me. The building is 2 stored, rambling and set in lovely gardens. Lots of chairs so you lounge about and enjoy experience. Staff helpful and friendly. Agree with others that WiFi in rooms and by pool would be good. Dinner was tasty if not spectacular.

Coming at the end of a week's walking holiday on the island, two nights at the Parador felt like we were spoiling ourselves a bit, but why not? The trek up the hill with the sun beating down on us was a real slog, but you see why they put the hotel here when you go into the very well-planted and carefully maintained grounds: the views over the town and across to Tenerife are simply great and the breeze that comes off the sea keeps the temperature down. We spent quite a lot of time on the loungers in the summerhouse, enjoying the views and listening to fellow guests splashing in the open-air pool below (they seemed to feel it was a bit chilly).

Our first-floor room was well furnished and comfortable, with a sea view. The bathroom was well-equipped, although the shower was in the bath and the hot water seemed to have a demented mind of its own, varying between lukewarm and scalding, seemingly at random.

The public areas of the Hotel have been very well thought out. There's lots of quiet places to sit (no children when we stayed, by the way -- hurray!) including a sort of inner courtyard with a fountain, which we found to be a very agreeable place to sip an aperitif before dinner. This is also the wifi zone, although a free-to-use desktop is also provided for those of us (apparently very few) without iPads.

We were on half board so ate in the restaurant both nights (and it's worth noting that there's nowhere else to eat within a comfortable walk of the Hotel). The dining room is well appointed, with lots of tables for two. The serving staff were helpful and efficient and the food arrived promptly. We were a little surprised that some hot dishes were served on cold plates; this meant they cooled down quickly and had to be eaten quickly. A shame, but the food itself was well-prepared and tasty. There's a good wine list, which the waiter who served us seemed to know his way round quite well. We can't say the same about the service we received in the bar, where a request for a white port worked in neither English nor Spanish, although it does feature on the restaurant menu (not on the bar menu, alas). Settled for a sherry. Breakfast offered plenty of variety, from Gomeran specialities to baked beans, but you need to get there early to get the best out of it.

The reception staff were a bit cool but this is a big hotel (60 or so rooms) so it's maybe a bit on the optimistic side to expect the personal touch. It's not cheap, by the way.

We stayed overnight at the end of January before catching the ferry to Tenerife. Lovely, relaxed and calm hotel with good views across the ocean. Very clean room and public areas. No children there when we were. On a hot day there are plenty of nooks and crannies to sit in the garden or the hotel itself. There is a quiet atmosphere (although the floors creak a bit!). Good breakfast but cooked food was sitting there too long. If you don't have a car, it's quite a hike up the hill but there are plenty of taxis about. We would definitely stay again.

Thoroughly enjoyed our third trip. The hotel staff were kind and helpful. Ask and you would receive. We found the restaurant foor was very good and the staff attentive. Room with a view yes. You do have to walk to the dining room and the other rooms but the walk is through wonderful corridors with nooks and crannies to sit and admire other views. Our room was lovely and super clean. We enjoy the gardens which are immaculate and have directors chair one overlooking the harbour and two over the town. It was exciting on the 5th jan with their usual parade. Yes there are steps down to town and a long way back but a taxi prompt and helpful. The town has wonderful stores and cafe's. Great place for peace and quiet. Pool area great and peaceful.

Comfortable firm beds.Spacious room. Immaculately clean room. Well kept gardens. Lots of lovely areas to sit in.
Everything is a long walk in the hotel.
Great looking pool, but the water was so cold that when you opened your eyes underwater they felt as though they were going to freeze over.
Ok recetion staff.
Poor location at top of rise overlooking the town so you would have to hike down to main part of San Sebastion then back up again. By road it takes long enough.
Would I stay again yews but I think I would try out some of the other hotels before going back to the Parador

Room Tip: Make sure you get a room with a balcony and a sea view. We stayed in 229 which had both
