“Perfect stay”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 2, 2010

We stayed for six nights end of August 2010 in the Porthouse (#1). The Porthouse is a separate building next to the hotel building.

The room was on two levels. Downstairs a "living room" with coffee machine, mini bar and safe, flat screen television and a full bath room with a shower. Upstairs the bed room with a bathroom with a bath tub/shower. The bed room also had a smaller flat screen tv.

From the bed room there is a stair case to the private roof terrace. The terrace a not so big, but VERY nice. Two deck chairs and an outdoor heated jacuzzi. From the roof terrace there is a beautiful view over the small harbor.

Room nice and clean. Furniture etc was ok - a bit scandinavian like.

In the morning there is a bit of noise from the little street when suppliers arrive with deliveries to the hotel

Breakfast was very nice. Plenty to chose and friendly staff. The restaurant in the hotel is great. Food is a bit "fusion like" with some "asian inspiration". Prices are moderate and the wine list is also pretty nice. Staff is very friendly and attentive.

The pool and sun deck are not so big, but look very inviting (didn't use any of them). Location of the hotel was great for us. A bit outside central Palma, but we borrowed bicycles and went into town (10 min or so). There is a separate path for bicycles all the way into central Palma. Also great in the evening when dining in Palma.

All in all, a great frame for a relaxing holiday. I fact we liked it so much that we immediately booked a long weekend in early spring - already looking forward.

I have been staying at the Portixol for the last 4 years, usually 2 x per year. June with the girls and September with my husband. I would say I have high standards and I do notice attention to detail and the little extras which make a hotel "stand out from the crowd". This is a small and intimate hotel with a famous restaurant (recently read in the RED summer mag that its "the place to celeb spot and catch the glam set".. not sure about that ! Hotel been open 11 years and a true sign of a good hotel is the staff are loyal to the hotel and have been there for many years. We have taken one of our daughters one particular year (at time aged 10) but I would not say this hotel is geared for children.

What I like
- Familiar faces who recognise you, friendly and professional, polite staff
- Cleanliness
- Free internet service
- Swap library and mags and daily papers
- Pool towels
- lots of extras in your room, water every day, soaps, creams, dressing gowns, flip flops, umberella's,
- Super choice of breakfast overlooking pool
- Lunch can be taken round pool or in restaurant
- Free bikes to cyle into Palma
- Small but adequate Gym and great Spa (with regular offers)
- Card and chocs and complimentary drinks for repeat vistors
- Music lounge.. with records (yes proper LP's!) and stereo
- within walking distance of Palma and 10 mins max from the airport (20 Euros)
- Mustang car hire.. great to go exploring
- Round the pool waiter service

What Could be Better (if I was to be really picky)

- price (not cheap but you get what you pay for)
- Some rooms are very small others are very airy and spacious. I usually go for the cheapest which is the biggest of the small rooms (room 25) but adequate
- coffee and tea making facilities in the room would be a real welcome
- Discounts for repeat customers (given one has to often book a year in advance perhaps the hotel dont feel they need to do this)
- or if no discount perhaps private transfer from the airport and back would be a nice touch for repeat loyal customers

I have mentioned the Portixol to many of many colleagues and friends. Some people I know have houses in Majorca and have heard or stayed or eaten at the hotel. I do believe this to be a great jewel of a find which attracts the more discerning of visitors.. just as one would want!

Have just returned yesterday from a 3 night trip with a group of 9 girlfriends to celebrate my 40th Birthday. This hotel is very special and has an excellent location about a 5 minute taxi ride from the centre of Palma. I rented the Attico penthouse room with my sister and the views from this room in particular are really amazing. It would be particularly suited to a couple as there is a high degree of privacy and it is almost like a small apartment. The hotel service was second to none and rivals many 5 star hotels I have stayed at in the Middle East. The rooms were spotlessly clean and all our party enjoyed excellent views from their med view rooms. Breakfast is served until 11 am which is great for those later risers. The food in the restaurant is to a very high standard and is excellent value for money. Some of us took advantage of the free bike hire and took the cycle path around the whole of the bay. There are beaches to both sides of the hotel within easy walking distance. The only slight thing downside is that tourists need to be vigilant of their valuables in Palma in general. We made use of the hotel safe but there appears to be quite a problem with bags being stolen. That said, I would definitely recommend this hotel to anyone wishing to stay in an excellent hotel near to Palma City Centre that has that little something special!

Bad feature:
NOISE! Being woken at 1am by loud thumping music in a hotel of this nature is unacceptable. We weren't sure whether it was from a neighbouring room or from the kitchens, but it was bad! The same thing on two occasions mid-afternoon ruined our atempts at a siesta.
As commented elsewhere, there is also a lot of general noise from room-to-room and the corridor. especially in the morning.

Good features:
A good sense of space in the communal areas. Nice pool. Good breakfast. Good decor. Excellent DVD library. Good restaurant. The neighbouring Italian restaurant El Tula was excellent as was the nearby fish restaurant.

Could improve:
Attitude of some staff - though some were excellent, others were downright miserable. Spa treatments - the massages we had were pretty poor.

We have been to Portixol three times, twice as a romantic couple in recent years and for the first time this July as a family with our 2 year old son. As a couple, we enjoyed the smaller no sea view room, and the expansive common areas and cabanas. With a child, Portixol required us to book a larger sea view room, and it was worth the extra cost: Room 42 overlooked the hotel pool and the sea. The large room with a balcony had an enormous shower room that easily fit 3 people. We keep returning to Portixol because of the phenomenal service, clean and funky decor, its great location which is an easy 5 minutes walk to the beach, fabulous salt water pool and legendary breakfasts. Our son has life threatening allergies to nuts and eggs and the staff went above and beyond the call of duty to ensure there was no cross contamination from the food and offered to cook special meals and all the staff appeared to have been briefed about his allergies, even when we ordered room service, and made eating at the hotel, which we did every day for a week, a real pleasure. We tried a different gelato at the gelati bar (cannot remember the name) along the esplanade every evening. The children at the hotel, predominantly Scandis and from the Continent, were very well behaved. Our whole family love the staff and facilities at the Portixol and cannot wait to go back next year, especially to try their new bikes including kiddy seats. Too easy. We stayed at the sister hotel Esplendido last year but prefer the proximity of Portixol to the beach and to the airport. Portixol cannot be beat. We only wish they would operate a hotel in Italy.

We loved this hotel and it was 100% right for the self contained rest and relaxation we were looking for (my wife and I went with our parents who are in their eighties). There were lots of public areas where you could sit and read, inside or out, in the sun or in the shade. Our rooms were first rate, having terraces and lovely views over the port and the sea (meaning they were more expensive).
The staff were excellent - they were friendly without being over-bearing, the girls on reception were particularly helpful and spoke excellent English. The restaurant was also very good. So we spent most of our five days actually in the hotel.
The location of the hotel is very good - about 10 minutes from the airport (18 Euro taxi fare) and 5 minutes from the centre of Palma. And the area immediately around the hotel was also good with some excellent restaurants and bars (and the hotel had helpfully provided an information sheet showing local facilities).
We had no real gripes at all, the rooms had showers not baths, but that's the way these days and there was no soap just squirty things on the wall, which worked but aren't as nice. And after five days it would have been nice if the restaurant menu changed (we had sampled most options by then!)
But these are minor points - we would very strongly recommend the Portixol.

From the moment we arrived, hot and sweaty at 11pm we fell in love with the Portixol. No nonsense about filling in forms, hand over a credit card and passports then we were ushered into the bar for a free drink (of our choice) while the hotel checked us in and put our luggage in our room. Thanks Anna
Breakfast is full of all the lovely things you intend to eat but somehow never do (Actimel, Activia Yoghurts, fresh fruit, home made yoghurt) as well as a nice selection of juices, breads, cereals and meats and cheeses. Free Telegraph and Guardian as well as other international papers every morning.
Everything is very laid back and chilled with efficient and friendly service - the cafe con leche is everything you want from a coffee.
The pool was just what we needed in the heat and Richard on pool service was great - even if he did seem to have an aversion to bringing ME water - perhaps he knows it is not my drink of choice.
Our room was quite small (for two large people) but perfectly adequate for four nights, with fantastic views over the harbour. Also the beds are superb - my brother-in-law refers to them as devil beds because you fall asleep immediately you lie down!
Drinks in the bar were very reasonable for the grade of hotel - we couldn't believe it was cheaper to drink rose wine than diet coke but hey, who's complaining?
The old town is only a €7-9 cab fare away - it is possible to walk but way too hot - although it is along the harbour/beach for most of the way so pretty scenic.
There are also some nice restaurants in the immediate area as well as the hotel - we only ate in the hotel once (at lunchtime) but it was very nice although pricier than in the Old Town.
