We have been going to Palma regularly over the last few years and have always stayed in hotels within 10/15 minutes walking distance of city centre and main restaurant area. However this year we got a great deal from Alpharooms on the Melia Palas Atenea and decided to give it a try even although it is much further, 20/25 minutes, along the seafront from centre.
The hotel has a vast reception hall area with dark wood and light plasterwork. We found it impressive, and not as some reviewers have said, as being 1970/80's. There is a circular bar and lounge area in corner of reception hall which we found rather lacking atmosphere, so had drinks elsewhere. Cannot comment on previous reviewers suggesting bar prices expensive.
The reception staff were very pleasant and helpful with any queries or problems. However a word of warning, the hotel operates alternate smoking and non-smoking bedroom floors. We arrived late and after being allocated a sea view room on the 5th floor, which had good views of the Marina and cruise liner terminal, we went out for dinner. It was only in the morning we realised the 5th floor was all smoking rooms. We had requested a non-smoking room but because we were only staying 5 nights didn't go through hastle of changing rooms. The rooms are of a reasonable size and adequately furnished, also a large flat screen TV, but few english language channels.
The buffet breakfast offers a good selection of hot and cold food with the biggest choice of pastries and cakes we have seen in a hotel. The Majorcan food area in buffet was a nice touch. There is also cava and rioja available as part of the buffet breakfast. We didn't have dinner in the hotel as we prefer to visit restaurants we have discovered through the years. The hotel did offer a 3 course dinner with a drink (very restricted choice) for 17 Euros which is extremely cheap for Palma.
The pool area is restricted in size, as in all Palma seafront hotels, as they are located on 2nd or 3rd floors. We would recommend it is essential to pay for a sea view room, unless you don't intend to spend any time on balconies. This is because the side and rear rooms have absolutely no view apart from other buildings unless perhaps you are on top floors. There is a narrow road on side of hotel with 3 rather dubious nightclubs on the ground floor of hotel building (but not part of hotel), and at rear the ground floor rooms are below level of pavement, so no view, no sun, no privacy.
In conclusion we would recommend the Melia Palas Atenea, especially if walking distances to the city centre are not an issue. It is a pleasant walk along the promenade beside the sea and Marinas. Also you can get a No 3 bus for 1.25 Euros from behind hotel to city centre, rail and bus stations. Personally we still prefer one of the other solmelia hotels, purely on location, but would stay in the Melia Palas again if the deal offered was better than the others.

Room Tip: Look for best deal on a high floor sea view room .

We stayed out of season and the hotel was eerily quiet with the pool closed. Our room with a balcony and a view of the marina and cathedral was fine. There is no point in staying here if you do not upgrade to such a room. The area around the hotel is OK but not very interesting and all the good restaurants are nearer the city centre (a good 20min walk). The staff were excellent and English is widely spoken as I'm sure is German. Just one thing, if you're going out of season and it looks as if it will be warm during your stay, ask if the aircon will be available. It was not switched on during our stay, and the room did get a little stuffy. Opening the French window isn't really an option due to the heavy traffic on the freeway below.

+ location in the middle of the nightlife area and only 10 min walk from the historic centre. just next door from the other more luxurious and certainly more expensive melia. spacious rooms. very good standard. great bed. only rooms in the front enjoy sea view. they come with a price.
- no beach (the good ones are out of town anyway). as usual, breakfast is quite expensive. but there's plenty of cafes just outside the door. no parking.

Have just returned from a Christmas holiday at the Palas Atenae with all my family.

The hotel itself is nothing special to look at from the street, but step inside and that all changes!!

There is a HUGE marble floored lobby with 8 to 12 foot tall crystal chandeliers hanging down from the ceiling, a staircase to the upper floor that looks like something from a luxury liner, and a 7 ft tall bronze sculpture standing in a pool with a 2 storey waterfall at one end! VERY Impressive!!!

The lobby also contains a really nice lounge at one side, a bar, and numerous comfy sofas and a large lcd tv, not to mention at night they turn on night club style lights that flood the lobby, really nice effect!

They also had a pianist playing a baby grand piano in the lobby on 3 of the 7 nights we stayed there!

The bar is a bit hit or miss whether there is anyone there, as I believe due to it being Xmas the usual barman works in the hotel's a la carte restaurant which is on the other side of the lobby.
Drinks prices were 2.75 euros for a normal sized beer (half pint), but 9.75 for gin and tonic, and 10.75 for Absolut Vodka and Coke! Quite expensive even though they are big measures in highball glasses!

Restaurant does a daily set menu for 17.50 euros plus drinks which is good value compared to restaurants around there, and is very well cooked, although we ate out pretty much all the time.

There are 4 lifts in reception, and indicators to tell you which lift for your floor will arrive next, very cool!!

There is WiFi internet throughout the hotel, charged at 12 euros for 12 hours of actual logged on use, so 12 hrs will last you for a whole weeks stay!

The rooms are very good quality, with FREE ELECTRONIC SAFE use included!!!!

There is even a "pillow menu" to choose what type of pillow (size , filling - feather / foam etc and harness) you would like if the supplied MASSIVE 6 pillows aren't enough on the 8ft approx wide bed!!!

All the rooms had 32 inch Philips LCD TV's, with lots of channels, although the only English ones were Sky News, BBC World Service, CNN, and a couple of others, Disney Cartoons (in German I think).

There is a minibar ( beer prices and water were ok, but miniatures of Vodka, Rum, Whisky, gin, were a rip off), as was 2.25 euros for a 200ml bottle of Coke, 2.25 for a small bag of sweets, suffice to say, we didnt use them, but just put our own stuff in the fridge too!

Other reviews have said the minibars are electronic and register you taking a drink out, THEY MAY HAVE BEEN ONCE as they do say that on them, BUT THEY AREN'T, the cleaners check them every morning and re-fill if necessary!

Cleaners seemed to arrive every morning by 9.30am and rooms were always tidied up efficiently!

Breakfast is pretty good, served till 10.30am prompt in the breakfast restaurant, lots of fresh fruit, cakes, bread rolls, bread, pastries, meats, cheesed, and a chef on hand to cook omelettes, eggs, tea, coffee, wine etc.
Waiters are extremely efficient and courteous, plates disappear almost as soon as you finish! Fabulous service! Eat as much as you like too! Yum!

The hotel has an outdoor pool, on the second floor outside sun terrace, and a YHI Spa with a heated indoor pool, although you have to pay to use the Spa one 10 euros per time.
There is also a gym, a business centre with photocopy, fax and printing / binding facilities for business guests etc..

All in all, the only thing we could fault with the hotel was the lobby bar service was a bit hit or miss, although no doubt this is down to it being Christmas and staff being elsewhere!

Palma Centre itself is a good 20 minutes walk which takes you to the Cathedral, and about the same to Bellver Castle BEHIND the hotel on the hill, there are a surprising number of Italian restaurants around the hotel.

There is a very good Modern Art museum on the way into Palma just off the seafront.

Overall a great holiday, although be careful in the clubs, as one of our group was ROBBED of all his money and new Blackberry Mobile when he was drunk!

The motto is always stay as a group, or at least a couple at al times.

There were a surprising number of "lookie-lookie" men selling Christmas rubbish on the seafront, also, beware the well dressed "Spanish" guy, who approached a number of people over the week on the seafront with an "I've lost my wallet" sob story and can you help me please!!!!

We told him to sling his hook, and my dad (ex police officer) even walked over a couple of times and told people about to get cash out, that he was a scammer!! lol!

Anyway, a fab hotel, not bad prices, although breakfast is expensive at 22 euros per room, or about 13 euros for a single person, cheaper if u just want a coffe/ croissant at little coffee bars / cafes 200 - 300m down road!

This hotel is one of the better places to stay in Palma. The staff we found to be very helpful and the restaurant food was very good, the menu of the day was quite passable for the price. Arrive at the airport and take the shuttle bus (2.00 euros each) to the stop for Titos' and it is less than 100m to the hotel back toward town. The choice at breakfast is excellent, it caters for all tastes and if you have a good wander 'round the breakfast bars it will keep you going until late afternoon !!
The Palma football team have their pre-match lunch in the hotel, the rivals usually go to the Victoria, just down the road.
All in all, an excellent week-end in an excellent hotel, in a lovely city.
