“The reason for our visit to Vitoria-Gasteiz”
Reviewed January 3, 2013

This was truly the highlight of our short visit to V-G. We booked the restoration tour online at the Santa Maria website. The guide must have been a trained engineer herself since she knew so much about the construction and history.

catedralvitoria.com/ingles/visitas_reservas.…

It was such a memorable experience to see the excavated areas, walk across the scaffolding, squeeze through the narrow archways high above the nave of the church and see the town from the roof! I wish I had a spy camera with me since no photography was allowed (just kidding, I don't own a spy camera).

“A must in any trip to the basque country”
Reviewed December 13, 2012

We've all heard about the Guggenheim museum, the playa de la Concha, etc...But for those of you who like me enjoy historical sites, medieval architecture, and cathedrals in particular, Santa maria in Vitoria-Gasteiz is a must see. I don't think there's anything quite like it anywhere else. In this cathedral, open to the public to show the restoration works, you literally get to see the layers of history in one glance. From the prehistoric basque village and cemetery which lays under it's foundations to the medieval city walls and the modern renovation which almost managed to take down the entire building trying to embellish it. At risk of collapsing for many decades, Santa Maria is now one of the main attractions of the city and I'd dare say of the entire country.

“Extremely interesting”
Reviewed August 26, 2012

We didn't go on the guided tour but on the cheaper (2euros?) "visit on your own" option. They give you a helmet and a 20-pages book of explanations about the works they are doing and the history of the cathedral. I think the guide is saying more or less what is written in the book (I could hear what he was saying to the group).

“Dive into the cathedral that inspired "World without end"”
Reviewed August 12, 2012

In my opinion this cathedral is fascinating! I love to feel like an archeologist discovering the misteries of the architectural problems of the building and the history of the city! It is a brand new point of view when visiting a temple.
