“Absolutely stunning”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 18, 2007

My boyfriend and I have just returned from Villa Soro and had a fabulous time. We arrived late on Friday night and were welcomed by very friendly, hospitable staff. Room was extremely comfortable with outside garden/chairs. We hired bikes, ate breakfast in the restaurant and just loved the place. After 4 nights we were sad to leave. Would definitely recommend for romantic weekend in the sun!!!

We were originally booked at the Maria Cristina but were put off by the iffy reviews as of late, so we tried this place based on its high ratings. It seemed a bit pricey, but Conde Nast Traveler had it on their 100 Hot New Hotels list last year and they are usually spot on.

It is a stately former private home and has the polished woodwork and marble floors that one might expect in such a building. The front yard, inside the gates, was very well manicured and had the air of a really nice home.

The staff were quite helpful and were very pleasant, and although our room was not ready for early check-in, our bags were brought up in time for our arrival for siesta time.

My room, in the main building, was beautiful, very simple and elegant. It was absolutely spotless. The bathroom was virtually paved in white marble, with a deep soaking tub and separate stall shower with great water pressure. They had Penhaligon's bath products, which smell terrific and are quite expensive, I am told.

The hotel is a bit of a hike into the central part of San Seb, but it is a pleasant walk in good weather and the road affords a great view of the surf and the town.

Breakfast was quite good, and included delicious ripe melon and berries, good sweet rolls and excellent coffee.

Is this place inexpensive? Not by a long shot. Is it worth the splurge? Yes! It definitely is.

Unfortunately we only stayed here one night. I wish we could have stayed a week. It's a lovely place to stay, the staff was very accomodating and helpful. The rooms were great, wonderful beds, linens and little patios. The breakfast buffet was good with a large variety of foods. It's outside of town but we walked to town and all over town. If you don't want to walk the bus is close by. If you want to splurge and feel like royalty I recommend staying here.

  • Liked — The staff, service and the luxurious feel
  • Disliked — A bit far from town

Jenny and myself recently toured the Basque country of Spain and France and ended with a five night stay in the Villa Soro San Sebastian/ Donostia.

At first we thought the hotel pretentious as it claimed quality but did not provide a restaurant, comprehensive breakfast bar or even pool and gym facilities.

On reflection we should have seen that their lack of quantity did not reflect lack of quality. Indeed, as an intuition we did not offer a 'tip' for the carrying of our luggage to our room because we thought that would insult the hospitality that we were receiving; this was pure intuition.

As we progressed through the week we came to recognise the high levels of care we received from the people who run Villa Soro.

The hotel is some twenty minutes walk from the centre of San Sebastian so this needs to be taken into consideration. However if you are really into serious quality pintxos and wine there are several excellent local bars recommended by the Villa. As well as recommendations for tapas in the old town and centro.

El Lagar, in Gros, was one of our favourites.

On a more general note about San Sebastian this is a city (shopping?) with three excellent beaches.

You can go up three mountains (steep hills) one of which has a quaint funicular railway and small fun-fair at the top; alongside a museum, castle and 4* hotel if you prefer. And there is an island to visit as well as other places nearby in Spain and France. Biarritz proved a great day out.

The society in the city still seems to hold to the family and you can see the grandmother taking the evening with the mother, teenage children and small children etc.

Loved it!

Sincerely,

Paul Clark.

We stayed two nights in this hotel at the start of September. We wanted something a bit special and were prepared to pay over the odds for this. However, we found the staff to be apathetic and at times standoff-ish. I asked one staff member for a glass of wine in the bar one evening and it felt like it was a hugh hassle for him to get it by his reaction. Not once were was any attempt made by any staff to go above and beyond the basic check in - here's your room routine. To sum up - no hospitality. The house is smart and crispy clean, but it borders on the cold/ sterile side of things. During our holiday we stayed in many other spots which were nicer hotels and cost (literally) less than half the price. Be careful before you dish out for this place.

We stayed at this hotel for 4 nights in September 2006. It's perfect -- a little way from the center of town, it's quiet and beautiful. The room was large and very clean, with a patio outside where we could take breakfast. The bathroom was also large, with a nice counter, and a separate shower and bathtub. The hotel staff seemed to appear only when we needed them, with towels and treats, but otherwise they just allowed us to go along with our day and enjoy our vacation. I definitely recommend staying here if you visit San Sebastian. Be sure to ask for the bikes to take a ride around town and to, at least once, enjoy breakfast in bed.
