“Lovely hotel”
Reviewed June 26, 2012

We loved our stay in this hotel---the staff were all super helpful and professional and San Sebastian is an incredible. My only complaint is that our room was located in the annex, rather than in the main building. Although the room was nice and certainly very clean, it lacked the charm of the main building.

The staff was amazing---every person that we dealt with was professional and well informed and they all went above and beyond to ensure that our stay was a great one.

The hotel is located about a 15 minute walk from the downtown area. Very pleasant walk (even with several rainy days during our stay). One day we took advantage of the free bikes that the hotel offers which was a fantastic way to spend the afternoon.

The breakfast every morning was really great---I recommend that if you are planning a stay here that you pay the extra fee for the breakfast!

We would absolutely stay in this hotel if we return to San Sebastian, we would just be sure to book a room in the main house.

Room Tip: ONLY stay in the main house!

Beatiful and charming hotel. We stayed in the main building and the room was spacious and very nice. No problem fitting a baby cot and 3 suitcases. Only downside was that we were on the -1 level that meant our balcony was sort of under ground level and didnt have a view, and there were no other windows. Breakfast was good, and all staff very helpful. We ordered dinner from the roomservice menu once, and the food was pretty avarage so definitively recommend eating out at many of San Sebastians meny nice restaurants.
The location is a bit out of the city centre, but only a few minute bike ride to the nearest beach, and 5 minutes to city centre. There are great bike tracks around town, and the hotel lend you bikes.

Room Tip: Book a room above ground

I stayed for six nights in the spacious room which has the balcony over the front door. The stay was part of my birthday celebration, and I was joined by a number of friends.

The staff were simply superb. I had planned the stay for some time, and was greeted like an old friend by Francisco. All of us commented on how welcoming the staff were and how much they wanted us to enjoy ourselves. All the front of house staff had an excellent knowledge of local restaurants and attractions in town and in parts nearby, including France. The breakfast, bar and lobby staff were charming and very efficient.

The deluxe room was very spacious and comfortable. The room décor is nicely understated. There was always an excellent flower arrangement in the main lobby, and the sitting room is that of an elegant country house. The impression one gets from the surrounding houses is that it was "the" area to build one's mansion back in the day.

I saw one of my friend's rooms in the annex and it was also spacious and tasteful if not quite to the level, or expense for that matter, of the deluxe room.

From my research, I knew that the hotel is not smack in the middle of downtown. It's a ten minute walk to the Zurriola beach, 20 to the old town, but with it virtually impossible to get a bad meal in San Sebastian, walking is by no means a bad thing. The street is a busy one, but quietens in the evenings which is when we made best use of the balcony. In any case, the windows are double glazed so noise isn't really an issue.

The lack of room service until 7pm caught a couple of friends off-guard as they arrived early afternoon and wanted a light meal. However, there is a supermarket less than 5 minutes away for snacks, plus you really should save your appetite for the fantastic local cuisine.

Room Tip: The most elegant rooms are at the front. The quieter rooms are at the back.

Villa Soro is a lovely old house. We found are bed to be a little uncomfortable, pillows good. We did stay in the main house not the annex and we were happy about that. Breakfast very good and servers very upbeat. We found the front desk to be efficient and very helpful. Everything was in good condition. You will need a taxi or car to get most everywhere. I would not call this a 4 star experience, but it was very pleasant, except for the bed. They have many complimentary beverages in the mini bar. We booked through Small Luxury hotels so breakfast was included. They do not really have a concierge. They do have a small business center. The Maria Christina hotel was still under renovation when we booked.

Room Tip: Stay in the main house. It rained the days we were there. Our room faced a side street and it was qu...

San Sebastian is not a cheap place to stay, yet this hotel still felt overpriced for what it is. The location isn't great - the road outside is busy and noisy - and it's a fair walk into the old town or to La Concha beach. The old house is beautiful, but the rooms in the rear annex are pretty uninspiring. The staff though were exceptional - the three front desk young people we dealt with we're all excellent, and extremely helpful with fantastic suggestions for places to eat.

Like a converted old mansion on a busy street but quiet enough; and very pleasant. Staff helpful. Breakfast good variety of food (even for veggies'). It is 10-15 minutes to the 'beach' and a further 10-15 to the main 'concha beach'. They have bikes to ride (stay on sidewalks - common to do) Old town is nice walk (20minutes). Safe feeling. Rooms not hugh but well appointed and upscale with good linens, bed and bathroom. We stayed in the Villa, they have building behind the villa; so not sure if it is equal. As you will find in spain, the level of 'interest' the staff has in service is variable and definitely not North american standard. No tipping as a reason? Cultural? Obviously, try to go to the famed Michelin rated restaurants (only live once they say); but you can easily find food restaurants all over. If you are not a meat lover, anywhere in Northern spain/basque is tough!

This hotel is a quaint and charming. I like its location and the hotel itsellf is nestled quite a distance from the street.
It's run very professionally. It didn't take long to register. Francisco is very helpful and made good suggestions. They anticipated guests' desire as putting our two reserved rooms side by side. After a night of absence, we came back and same rooms were given. We left our luggages for night to go to Lourdes and returned. We were happy to learn that they placed our luggages in the room.
The staff are courteous, friendly and efficient. I regret that I failed to get the name of receptionist who checked us out the day of departure. He even asked if we liked to have coffee because it was six am. Thank you! Europeans have changed. We stayed April 21 to 25.

Room Tip: I think the rooms assigned to us are very comfortable and look out to courtyard. We didn't choos...
