“Friendly reception, but overpriced”
Reviewed August 14, 2010

We paid 120 Euro a night to stay in a shoe-box. Definitely wasnt what I was expecting for our first night in Spain. Thankfully it got much better after this experience.

The people were very nice, but clearly out to earn every centime they could – the breakfast was in a separate bar. It was very poor. They also charge you extra to leave your bags with them for the day. Only advantage was that it was quite central. The sound-proofing from the street was good, but we still were woken at 6am each day by the baby in the next room.

Not great. Stay somewhere else!

Unique plus of the pension Gran Bahia - 2 is its location. Rooms are awfully small and if you have a suitcase it will take all place between bed and wallы, and you should jump through it over each time. Doors of the next room are almost end-to-end one to another. We managed a room number two. The conditioner was absent, heating too. Therefore it was very cold in a room. But it not the biggest affliction.

It seemed as if walls and doors are made of a cardboard. When anybody speaks or goes in a corridor or in a room of the manager, the impression is as somebody rushes into your room. Forget about any private life and about any romantics - you will be heard by all neighbours - and you will hear all. To sneeze, cough, pace the room, use a toilet, to talk and do all the rest to you it is necessary in a whisper! We in vain tried to have a rest after early lifting and flight. To make it was impossible because of noise in a corridor and a room of the manager because they called and came some times during our rest (and we have stayed in the room almost three hours).

Also the toilet is so small that you will rest a head against a huge clumsy wooden beam near to a toilet bowl.

The safe has been locked by the previous tenants. But Juan Carlos has promised us to open it. So he has pulled it out from a case, has put on a table, has taken out something on the forward panel of the safe, and there was a keyhole. We understood that it is possible to open or take out the safe simply in our absence. The desire to store there money or documents was gone.

We reserved pension for 6 days, but after three hours spent in the room, we have understood what to stay here is impossible. Having conferred with the husband, we have decided to find other hotel, more large, where our private life and safety of our money is guaranteed, and then were looking for a new hotel for almost three hours. Having returned, we have explained to the manager, that we would like to leave Gran Bahia - 2, and have asked, whether will be enough, if we leave to him money for residing at a rate of payment for one night. He has answered positively, and we have left to him 50 euros cash. But he has not given us any paper, or any receipt according to our paiment.

In two days he has again drawn out money from my credit card at a rate of 50 euros. I have asked to talk to him of my lawyer. Juan Carlos has answered that he was going to sell this room again, but could not, therefore has drawn out money from my card and for the second night too. He has referred that on a web-site is written about booking cancellation for 48 hours, therefore he has the right to take from us money repeatedly. But on a site it is not specified that payment at annulment undertakes for 2 nights, instead of one, as at booking in other hotels. He should tell us about it at our departure from the pension or warn by phone that will in addition draw out money from a card.

In reply to my inquiry about illegitimacy of repeated removal of payment for the hostal my bank has blocked my credit card, and I remained without money. In general, holiday has been spoilt by the further finding-out of relations with Juan Carlos. Despite an excellent location of Gran Bahia - 2, we NEVER will recommend it to anybody for to stay there or to contact with its managers and owners. Be careful! Beware of the spoilt holiday!

The Gran Bahia Bernardo is in the old part of San Sebastian surrounded by wonderful shops, the famous pintxo bars of San Sebastian, wonderful bakeries and sites. Mireia was helpful getting us settled in and telling us what we should see and where the most economical places were to eat. The rooms were very clean and quiet. We would definitely stay there again when we go to San Sebastian.

We booked 2 twin rooms for our first nights stay and unfortunately as 2 rooms were unable for our second night we were offered one room for 4 people. We presumed this was a different bigger room designed to accommodate 4 people, however this was absolutely not the case. They proposed removing the 2 lockers and adding a third bed adjoining the twin beds with a 4th bed at the foot of these 3 beds in one of the original rooms! The only remainaing available floor space was just sufficient to allow the door to open! i don't know where we were supposed to leave our luggage or how 4 adults were supposed to sleep in such cramped conditions. We declined to stay and found suitable accommodation elsewhere however we were subsequently billed for one nights stay. On a short break it was not an option for us to move accommodation after one night. I believe we should never have been offered the option to sleep 4 people in 1 room as it was a most unsuitable option and probably in breach of health and safety and fire regulations. A very unfortunate start to an otherwise enjoyable stay in san sebastian.

My first interactions with Hostal Bahia were a little rough. The image they posted of their rooms with associated pricing was not correct. They informed me that the superior room shown for 79 euros was booked, but that they had another type of room for the same price. Fair enough, but a little misleading.

When I did decide to actually stay there, they asked me to fax in my card details to reserve the room. Unfortunately, I do not have a fax machine and have only ever had to email or call in my card details. There was no other way to reserve the room, so it was very inconvenient to find a fax machine to send in my details using and international fax number. Since they are a part of a larger chain of hotels, I would suggest them having a secure page added to their site for people to enter their reservation and/or payment details.

Hostal Bahia could be a little more creative with breakfast and offer more of a selection rather than just coffee/tea and bread. I'm not asking for a fully cooked breakfast. Yogurt, fruit, cheese, cereal, meats, etc. Any or all of the above would have been appreciated.

Other than that the stay was nice. The rooms were clean and the staff was courteous.

The location was great. Only a couple of minutes from the beach and close to the train station.

I would recommend this hostal to a friend.
