“Great value!”
Reviewed August 14, 2012

We stayed for a couple of nights at this cozy hotel and we had a great experience. Our room was very spacious, clean and comfortable, and it had a beautiful view of the bay. If we were to come back to lovely San Sebastian we would definitely try to get again a room there.

Nice view, nice staff, nice hotel. No problem. Quiet and near by the beach. Free Wifi. Mini bar, tiny bathroom but nice room. We would come back if in Donostia. nice stay, nice weather, nice walking on the beach with donostian people along the beach ...

Room Tip: Choose rooms on the front.

We stayed here for 2 nights. It is on the quieter of the 2 beaches in San Sebastian and about 30 minute stroll along the promenade to the old town and nightlife. We were able to get a free parking space in front of the hotel and the staff moved our car daily to make way for other guests which was a good service and a great game to guess which space the car would be in...
Although not directly on the sea front the building between the hotel and the front has recently been demolished and so it is, by default, by the sea. We were told as we checked in that we had one of the best rooms, and they were right, room 403 Degas. We had 3 sets of balcony doors and a view of the sea. There was only one other room in the hotel with this view. Other rooms had no balcony doors, just windows, or a view of the road. I rate this hotel highly because of the luck we had with our room, if we were to have one of the lesser rooms I would not have been so happy. The room itself was also beautiful, very individual pieces of furniture and rugs which gave it a homely feel, different to the usual generic hotel rooms.
The hotel was quite pricey (135 euros a night), but for the room we got it was worth it and didn't seem too different from the cost of other hotels in the resort.
We were also told that we could have complimentary breakfast, precisely, 1 OJ, 1 coffee, 1 pastry each but we preferred to have lazy mornings and wander down to the cafe along the promenade with great views and well priced snacks, La Perla I think it was called.

We had just spent a night at the hotel Niza (15 minute walk away) before checking into La Galeria for the remainder of our stay in San Sebastian. My wife had booked this hotel based on their website and boutique rooms. As each room is based on a famous painter's painting, we were given Lucien Freud.

Immediately, I was a bit surprised as to how dark the lobby and rooms are. Ofcourse being part of it's atmosphere, I didn't feel as though I was staying in a beach town but at night is when the hotel looks it's best. The hotel is located just short of the beach and our room was facing the street so no ocean view. On the whole, I don't doubt most of the rooms have views to the ocean and all suffer from the same lighting problem. Like most hotels, Niza included, we could hear the guests come and go but it's to be expected in some of the older hotels.

The staff is minimal as there is only two persons alternating shifts at the front desk and a few cleaning staff. The downstairs is where they have a modest sized bar and is where they serve breakfast. A selection of hot or cold sandwiches. The staff were all friendly and accommodating during our stay.

The beach the hotel is nearest to is quite nice and the smaller of the two and a bit quieter as well. When it came time to go out for dinner or drinks it did take us a decent 20-30 minute walk each way. Even so, with the beautiful view we didn't find it to be a problem, only when it rained, haha.

If I had to choose again, I probably would pass on La Galeria partly for it's location but mostly due to the dark atmosphere the hotel has in contrast to the sunny qualities you'd expect from a beach-town hotel. All in all, the location of San Sebastian is so picturesque that it didn't hinder our holiday.

Turned up on Hotel doorstep and enquired about room availablity expecting to get a poor room as we had not booked in advance. Very pleased with room, modern, clean, above average size. Only a breakfast - snack bar but the walk into town for the restaurants in the evening is a pleasure anyway. Was sorry to leave after 2 days and find another hotel for our last night.

  • Liked — Good modern clean building and rooms
  • Disliked — No Pool

My husband and I stayed here for 6 nights in June 2006 - I was a little apprehensive after reading some of the reviews on tripadviser but I had left it a bit late to book a hotel for our trip and didn't have much choice.
Our first night here was hell (sorry) because of our bed - it was the most uncomfortable bed I have EVER slept in. The following morning we were prepared to move out and take our chances elsewhere (even knowing availability in SS would be tight!). Anyway, the receptionist was shocked at our bed complaint but said she would try and get us a different room - give her 20 minutes. We went out for breakfast and returned 30 minutes later - to be showed a room on the 4th (top) floor. The Gauguin room was very similar to our original room (3rd floor), perhaps a little smaller, but the bed was much firmer and proved to be huge improvement.
The rooms are very tastefully decorated, with dark wood flooring (which is a pleasant change for usual spanish hotels are tiled or marble) and have great air coniditioning (and radiators are there for winter) and the bathrooms are spotless with good toiletries. The rooms aren't massive but adequate bearing in mind the only time we spent in ours was to sleep and get ready to go out in the evening! I would say the hotel walls aren't thick so you do here your neighbours pulling the toilet flush but not so loud that it keeps you awake at night. The reception staff were excellent - helpful and polite all of the time. The location of La Galeria is fantastic for the beach, Playa del Ondarreta is just across the road and I personally liked it much better than neighbouring Playa de La Concha. It is a 30 minute walk into town but as has been mentioned by other reviewers this is part of SS charm and I am sure it is mandatory for all locals to walk up and down the sea front promenade at least 3 times a day, so staying here is great! The hotel hires bikes - there are cycle tracks all along the sea front right into the centre and to the surfing beach at the other end of town. I definitely recommend a bike ride to see the sights. A good restaurant close by is the San Martin - ask the hotel staff to give directions but basically its at the far end of Ondarreta.
If returning to SS would I stay here again? yes I think so but I would ask for a room on the 4th floor - Gauguin - if possible!

We stayed at the Hotel La Galeria in June of 2006. The hotel and the room were clean and simple. The hotel provided shampoo, toothbrushes and slippers, as well as a few other toiletries and those were replenished as they were used. The location was ideal - very close to the beach (across the street). The area was very quite. The room was comfortable and the front desk staff was very helpful - accommodating any requests that we made. On a couple of nights we requested silverware and dishes to prepare our own meal in the room and each day dishes were removed. The city center was about a 30-40 minute walk but the hotel had bike rentals for about 5 euros a day. We enjoyed the walk or bike to and from the city center each day.
