I was referred to Bar Azkena by our DE for San Sebastian, and a big THANK YOU ! for that !!
This place is easily missed by tourists... which probably delights the locals..but I had to ask TA to add it to thier list. I also have to highly recommend this place as a stop when hungry .
Inigo & mertxe (I know I have spelled that wrong M, sorry xo) are wonderful...she makes the most amazing dishes in her small kitchen. The following photos do not do them justice!
Inigo will help you along with ordering and the food is sublime! He also make s a mean cafe shot !
They are famous for thier tortillas..I tried the bacalao O M G !! the onion and tater so good...just soft enough in the middle... mushroom...you get the idea.. this place is open early for the local vendors...and it is hard to beat her tortilla. She garnishs with hand rolled idzabel cheese crisps , fresh fried peppers, crisp ibercio jamon...serious food folks
They are on the lower level of La Brexta market, which is a wonderful place to browse in San Sebastian as it is...the seafood is WAY above barcelona and many other places I have been. ... they are on the far side ... exact opposite from the fish market... so leave the fish stalls, go past the butchers...and you will find Azkena.
Her Morcilla was the best I had this trip to spain... and I had morcilla in 8 different villages and cities. The duck and orange... so good... had the ox tail twice... the meat stuffed green peppers... and then the soft cod encased in light, crisp potato..the nicest accent from the olive oil.. light drizzles of mustard, ink, aioli to garnsih.... did you get that? ;)
I think I stopped here 5 OR 6 times... I would shop the market for kokotxa or something different to cook in my apartment at night...and this place became one of my fav stops in SS. By my reviews... you can tell I get a bit fussy after all the time in SS. Treat yourself here !!
They close mid afternoon for a couple hours and then reopen till 5 ish...they are closed when the market is.
This is a great place to go earlier... great place to start your day
Mertxe made me a wonderful dessert before I left... the layered quince, her hand made wafers baked with goats cheese and seeds... soft quinelle of vanilla pod ice cream... now to find where i put those photos lol
do yourself a favor !!
