We spent a great day with Jon, not Jon Galdos who runs Basque Tours, but his colleague who is also named Jon. Jon was personable, punctual, informative and, despite it being a full day with about 2 hours of driving from Getxo (port outside of Bilbao) to Rioja, was enthusiastic and energetic the whole time. We had two little girls with us and Jon was very good with them too and flexible with bathroom breaks and adjusting visits.

Jon arranged for us to visit two wineries - Marques de Riscale is a very slick operation with a Frank Gehry designed hotel and production facilities to match while the other, El Fabulista in Laguardia, an incredibly picturesque medieval village, was a more family affair. Aside from the scale, the way they make their wines is very different so the wine geeks in our group were very excited.

We had lunch with Jon in the town square of Laguardia and he helped with the menu - they have menus in English but the translations don't always work (what's an "illustrated salad"?). The red peppers stuffed with shrimp and mushrooms was one of the highlights of our trip to Europe and that's saying something given how many places we ate at.

If you're going to San Sebastian/Basque Country - you MUST tour with Jon. Laid back but super informative, he was the perfect guide. He picked us up right on time in his immaculate Mercedes Viano. We toured breathtaking cliffs, took hikes along the shoreline, went txacolina tasting at a vineyard (note: the vineyard was closed to the public, but Jon is friends with the winemaker so we had a true behind-the-scenes experience). We finished up with a pintxo tour of the Most Insane Tapas. We strolled through the city after dark drinking rioja and nibbling smoked cod with biscuits, basked lobster bites, succulent mushrooms, spicy mussels, etc. NOTE: San Sebastian is filled with pinxto bars, they are a dime a dozen - Jon knows the best bars and what to order at each one. (Also, we're from FL and VA and his English was probably better than ours - for those of you who haven't mastered Spanish, you'll be in good hands). Cannot recommend enough. - Maria

We spent a wonderful all day tour with Jon, touring both the incredibly beautiful Basque countryside as well as the spectacular coastline ! Jon was punctual , personable and an interesting person with whom to spend the day. Since Jon has grown up there he has knowledge of little known side trips and walks. This was an all day trip which mixed touring in the car with walks, lunch and magnificent sight seeing. Worth every penny as we would never have had the opportunity to see what we saw without Jon's tour.

My wife and I recently spent a great day with young Jon (Jon G's trusty sidekick). We were picked up on time and headed out for a full day doing our trip that included a stop in St. Jean Pied de Port. This happens to be a quaint old Basque town with buildings dating back a long way and is an important destination on the Santiago de Compostela pilgrimage route. Jon did a great job helping us understand how and why the homes were constructed as they were. Leaving SJPdP we headed up into the Pyrenees, which surprisingly reminded me of some parts of New Zealand, and down into Pamplona with many stops along the way. The Pamplona stop started at the Plaza del Toros and did the reverse direction of the running of the bulls. We stopped at the Cafe Iruna, the same spot that Hemingway used to hang at, for a cold beer before making the trek back to San Sebastian. Jon did a great job with tons of detail about all the places we visited. He gave us a real nice introduction to the uniqueness of the Basque world as well as some stellar recommendations on where to go for great Pinxtos.
