We passed through the bar and headed downstairs for dinner, and enjoyed a lovely baked monkfish, a substantial salad and flan for dessert. Recommended.

It is almost impossible to choose a bar to start at when you begin pintxo hopping. Bar Munto was amazing... the staff was welcoming (and patient with newbies) and the pintxos were beyond delicious (the food I had in the Basque country was the best I've had in the world). Pintxo hopping is absolutely a must in San Sebastían and Bar Munto was a perfect place to start.

“Pintxo” bar crowded with local people. The saying “if you see a pintxo bar that is busy… then you know it’s good” truly applies to this bar. The pintxos spread along the bar top are an absolute feast for the eyes, though I didn’t try them.
But the hidden gem is downstairs, where you will find an excellent restaurant. We were served a two-course meal, including “kokotxas” (hake cheeks), a fish delicatessen at 25€ fixed lunch menu, good wine included. Very good value for money.

First of all, a general warning!
You probably know by now that San Sebastian is pretty expensive. Add to this the fact that it is a popular touristic destination and thus... don't be surprised that you feel hunted as soon as you start tasting the famous pintxos in the Parte Vieja. Going around, trying more than one bar, you'll start noticing that almost everywhere the bartenders try to get an "extra tip" of you: when you are finished with the pintxos you chose and ask for the bill, they would tell you an amount that will include that "extra tip". So, after a couple of bars I started repeating (in some surprised tone of voice) the amount they told me. As a result, they almost always showed that gesture of "oh, sorry, my mistake" and asked for a less amount. Naughty boys and girls :)

As for Munto, don't get confused with the bar at the entrance: typical pintxos bar, not the best (the best is next door, but I don't remember the name, sorry) not the worst. Sometimes it's crowded and the two girls in the bar are pretty rude (looking and sounding, typical Guiputxi females). But if you dare to go downstairs you'll find an oasis of tranquility and delicious food. The two waiters (another two girls) are nice and polite and the dishes are first class, from starters to desserts. We loved it. And the best part is the price: we had a menu (on Saturday) for only 25 euros per person with a bottle of good wine included. Fantastic!!! Incredible price for this quality in San Sebastian!
