“Atmospheric, Historical and Luxurious”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 28, 2010

We stayed here late November 2009. I messed up in posting a prompt review but hope that this is still useful to others.

PROS:
- Well located grand old hotel. A 5-10 minute walk from the old quarter. Right next to underground parking. We used this as a home base for a few day trips and this was very convenient. On our last night, there is free night-time parking in front of the hotel which was great given our very early checkout.
- Excellent and very friendly staff. Noted upon check in that they are happy to provide us with great accommodations. They didn't disappoint. The room was high up from the noise, with a 180 degree view of the river. The staff had both written and informal recommendations for cuisine befitting San Sebastian's reputation. They were quick to offer us umbrellas on cloudy days.
- Luxurious and well maintained facilities. The bathroom was spacious and luxurious. Had marble all over, big tub, separate shower area, double sinks with good lighting and a separate toilet room. The bedroom was very large and had access to a full length window/balcony. Although old, the property is impeccably maintained.
- Although they did not have a business center, they have several computers in a discreet corner of the lobby for a quick check on email or generation/printing of directions and boarding passes.

CONS
- Expensive breakfast but this is not a big issue since the location is central and the rate is expected for this caliber of hotel. And a very light breakfast is recommended given the pinxtos and multi-course dinners the old quarter has waiting.

Would definitely recommend for a nice luxurious splurge in grand old San Sebastian.

We were fortunate to use our Starwood points for free nights at the Maria Cristina. The staff was very polished and gracious, upgrading our room without prompting to one that overlooked the Bay, beautiful baroque theater and public statuary square to the west of the hotel. We spent our first afternoon watching a motion picture being filmed on location in the square directly below our room while hang-gliders were drifting by a few hundred yards away along the coast. Our room was large, elegant and plush, with the typical amenities you would expect from a 5 star hotel. Spain is full of smokers and the air in the hotel bar was unbearable. Fortunately, there were tables right outside the bar that were relatively smoke free. We had no problems with the air quality in our room. Internet service was priced at a typically outrageous amount. The only bright spot was that the pricing included a 5 euro per hour option, which met our needs for each day. As far as driving goes, parking is also difficult, and the hotel is located on a one-way street and if you miss it you could travel for quite a distance before finding a route back. The best thing to do is to NOT drive, we found the car not very useful except for our one trip to Mugaritz Restaurant, which is about 20 minutes from the hotel. Also, it was kind of annoying that the public parking garage basically under the hotel was expensive (over 30 Euros per day, with no in and out privileges), had very tight spaces and we had to run a gauntlet of panhandlers every time we went to retrieve the car. There are lots of stores, restaurants and attractions within a short walk from the hotel. One particular attraction is the beautiful public square and garden in front of the County Government building directly behind the hotel. It's an easy walk to the old town and all of the really great tapas bars that are there. Overall we had a very comfortable stay and would return.

Huge hotel located on the river with views of the ocean. Old world charm with courteous, caring staff. If the staff doesn't know the answer to your question, they will find out for you in a timely manner. It was an enjoyable stay within walking distance to La Concha. Parking can be difficult so check with the hotel if you are driving.

We stayed at the Hotel Maria Christina for 3 nights recently and it did not live up to expections. Service was poor from the moment we arrived, with a surly check in and did not improve. Although there were always 2 or 3 staff outside the doors, none ever offered a greeting or assistance - you passed by as though you were invisible. I dont think it lives up to its alleged 5 stars by a long way. No business centre, just 2 computers in a corner of the lobby. Other places we stayed in Spain including the Ritz in Madrid and Hotel Arts in Barcelona put this propery to shame as far as service and attitude were concerned. Whilst the location is great it does not outweigh the negatives.

I'm always sceptical when I see poor reviews for 5 star hotels. Once you're staying there you should know breakfast's going to be €25, wifi €20, valet parking €28, and all these things are indeed true of Maria Cristina. It's also true that how much you pay influences how you rate the experience. Well we stayed at only one night's notice, booked over the phone, so were paying a whopping €345 + tax for a "deluxe" room only, so we had very high expectations. The arrival was a bit confusing the car entrance to the hotel forecourt not being clearly marked so we went round the block a couple of times and had to go inside to find the valet to park it. Check-in was efficient, but nothing like as welcoming as a Four Seasons, or the Paris Ritz, etc. As for the room: it was quite big, but old fashioned (70s plastic light switches). There were two separate controls for the airconditioning, neither of which seemed to work - at night we ended up opening the window. The bathroom, again was big, but old fashioned and meanly supplied (one bar of soap!). The bath tap was misaligned and so caused water to go all over the floor - a recurring event judging by the rotting wood in the door frame.

In conclusion, if I'd paid €150-200 for this, I'd have been happy. At €345, just not good enough.

we liked this hotel - huge room with large comfortable bed and quite a good bathroom. We made a booking without breakfast on a 25 percent discount and the value was not good but not outrageous. At full price and with breakfast at 25 euros per person plus tax, with about 27euros for valet parking/day ( you don't use it as everything is within walking distance) , plus 20 euros for room wi-fi (this seems ridiculous in a top-class hotel these days) , it would seem seriously overpriced . Still, we had a very nice stay there and the location is great.
