Another superb Starwood property in Spain. Nice, comfortable room with neat view of river and Bay. Surrounded by amazing restaurants. Good location between old town and city center. easy to walk everywhere. Service was great. Concierge did top job with getting dinner reservations at some of the world's great restaurants.

The good: This is a beautiful, old-world hotel that physically retains a strong sense of what it would have been like to stay there a century ago. The location could not be better, with beautiful views of the ocean and the Kursall and just a short walk from really anywhere in town you would want to go. The room was enormous, extremely well-appointed, and we were very pleased being able to open our balcony doors and enjoy the fresh air. We adored San Sebastian, and would highly recommend visiting Martín Berasategui while you are there - truly one of the most glorious meals of my life.

The bad: The clientele. If you are looking for an understated, adult atmosphere - keep looking. The hotel appeared fully stocked with entitled, loud Americans (the kind who talk slowly and louder in lieu of Spanish or Basque) lugging their embittered children for the length of our stay. These hordes of naughty children and slack-jawed adolescents were a real downer and made us avoid the hotel common areas. In fact, at one point my travel companion was spit on (yes, spit on) from an above staircase landing by one of these monsters.

I guess if I had a bunch of children that I had to bring to San Sebastian, this would be the place for me. But as this is not the case, I would look elsewhere for a more sophisticated environment with like-minded travelers (Villa Soro comes recommended by friends who recently honeymooned there). Obviously, the hotel cannot be held liable for the clientele and I'm sure things are different at other times during the year. However, this is precisely the information I wish I had prior to dropping a load of cash at this place - it is exceedingly expensive.

My fiancee and I enjoyed a romantic weekend away in the deluxe room with river views. It was beautiful. The room had all the luxury comforts - fluffy bathrooms, oversized marble bathroom with shower and bath (very comfortable double shower jets, excellent water pressure), WC with bidet. What I like about the room most was the massive bed - high and huge with very comfortable bedding - makes for a truly luxurious experience!

Location wise its very central, but the view is not as good as the Hotel de Londres (which is only 4-stars) but enjoys a sea-front view. We stayed at the Hotel de Londres last time and whilst it was comfortable it was certainly not as luxurious as Hotel Maria Cristina - but the view of the beach was far more interesting than the river!

For room service - I suggest giving the Asian cuisine (from their Asian restaurant) downstairs a miss...its rather bland and nothing special. Instead order from their normal kitchen of local cuisine - the Iberian ham and curly fries are delicious!

San Sebastian is a food-lovers heaven so don't bother with room service unless you are craving a midnight snack. All the restaurants and bars within walking distance are excellent (even the non-Michelin starred ones). Walk along the harbor and eat fresh seafood at one of the local restaurants at the end.

Great service and friendly staff.

We stayed 3 nights in a deluxe room on the 4th floor. On the positive side, large room, comfortable beds, great location right in the centre of San Sebastian and very good breakfast (proper freshly squeezed orange juice, nespresso coffee, cooked breakfast and some organic products). However, despite some attempts to bring it to 21st C standards (useful IPad by the concierge) it needs a revamp, it feels grand but bland and dull at the same time, certainly decor is a bit old fashioned in the bedrooms and bathroom, amenities products are rather poor and overall we found the service a little slow and impersonal. Wifi did not work in the bedroom and it is very expensive. Did not have treatments but had a look at the spa and instead decided to book the nearby La Perla which we did not regret.

Stayed 4 nights in mid-July. I used Starwoods points so the high room cost was not a factor. My wife and I loved the hotel. They gave us a lovely room on the 4th floor overlooking the river, bridge and town. When our check-in turned out to be postponed, the desk clerk ioffered to buy us drinks at the bar while we waited. I have read re[ports that the hotel was dirty, but to us - that could not be further from the truth as we found it spotlessly clean. Staff was extremely helpful and very knowledgeable about locations, activities, transportation, etc. This is an old world class hotel. even though it is scheduled for a long closure for remodeling this fall, we hope they don't lose the beauty and charm that this great lady has. San Sebastian is an incredible place, and this hotel is a beautiful base to enjoy it from.

From the minute we arrived at the hotel, we were impressed by the warmth of the staff and the luxury of the surroundings. The receptionists could not have been more helpful or friendly giving the impression that they were delighted to be of service to us.

The deluxe room was exceptional in every way. The huge bathroom was luxurious. The bed was exceptional and the living space was most generous.

The concierges were exceptional and provided the very best advice on places to eat at, and visit. On our first night, we enjoyed a fantastic meal in the beautiful Saigon restaurant.

I cannot speak highly enough about the quality of our stay and we will most certainly be back.
