Pension Ira-Flor

Jyst stayed at this hotel with 3 friends. Firstly, the hostel was full so we stayed in an apartment nearby where there was no wifi (hostel is advertised as having wifi). Second, we had to share the apartment with 6 other girls. We knew we are booking accommodation with shared bathrooms but try sharing a bathroom among 10 women! Third, they dont offer the option to leave your luggage on the last day if you want to walk around after check out (so add €5 per person). And lastly, as many other reviews noted the worst about the whole experience is the owner. She yelled at us for wanting to shower in the evening when the other girls arrived saying that they probably want to freshen up (how were we supposed to know they are arriving??) She forgot to turn on the hot water in the apartment and when we complained yelled back at us asking why didn't tell her we wanted to shower. Every interaction with her resulted in her yelling at us for something! San Sebastian is a gorgeous city, but Señora Flor almost ruined it for us.... :c(

A friend and I, both from the US, arrived in San Sebastian without a place to stay and on a fairly tight backpacker budget. We looked at a number of pensions and hotels, but they were either too expensive, too far out of of the city, or both. We stumbled on Pensión Ira-Flor in Old Town just when we thought we wouldn't find a good and affordable place to stay.

A lady asked us through the intercom to walk upstairs when we arrived. We were greeted by the owner, Flor, on the second floor. I speak Spanish and was able to communicate well with her, but she also speaks a little bit of English. She was very pleasant from the beginning of our conversation. She showed us two separate rooms, and we agreed to take the double-bed room with a balcony (room 3).

Our entire stay was phenomenal. The room was nice, and the pension's staff did a great job cleaning it every morning. Flor is without a doubt one of the most pleasant business owners I've met. She helped us with everything. She gave us directions, helped us get to know the city, and even let us use her beach towels and her washer for our clothes. The price was also very reasonable (especially in relation to the many other places we looked at). We even decided to stay one extra night because the pension and the city were great.

I frankly don't understand how the pension could get any of the negative reviews on this website. The pension is by no means dirty. The staff kept the place impecable. The owner Flor is incredibly helpful and friendly, and simply one of the nicest persons I've met in my travels.

To be fair, from my room, I could hear some noise from Old Town on Friday night, but it was manageable and didn't bother me. The other nights the noise wasn't bad at all (we stayed there from Wednesday to Saturday morning). Also, my room was not new, but it had everything we needed. There were two full bathrooms at the pension, and I was able to shower or use the bathroom whenever I wanted to.

I recommend the pension to any traveler who is looking for a friendly, safe, centrally-located, and reasonably-priced place to stay. If I ever return to San Senastian, I'll definitely be staying at the Pensión Ira-Flor again.

My partner and I traveled round Spain for a summer on a backpackers budget and unfortunately came across pension Ira. It was by far the worst, smelliest depressing placed we stayed. The Old lady was a nightmare to deal with and we definitely will never return. Stay away at all cost.

The pictures from the web site are not representative of the reality.
The place is dirty, loud and uncomfortable.
The walls are made with paper or bed sheets.. for real!
