“The best pintxos of San Sebastian!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 31, 2013 via mobile

The place is full and the service is other than customer friendly, but it all pays of with the first bite: after two days in Donostia, it was casually the last pintxo place we went to and it was, by far, the best one!
It's an explosion of tastes, so good you wish you could save the taste in your mouth forever. Ask for the volcano, the bacalao and vieira pintxos and enjoy!

“Outstanding - some of THE best food I have ever tasted!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 25, 2013

I almost didn't write a review because this is the kind of place you want to keep to yourself. With the maze of streets in Parte Vieja having so many bars and the appeal of MIchelin star places hidden around San Sebastian, you wouldn't think to venture in to Gros. But trust me - Hidalgo 56 is THE reason to venture in to Gros!

It was recommended to us by a fellow foodie who we had met in another great place, Zaruka, the night before. He had described to us black pudding with an egg yolk on top, prawn lollipops with goats cheese, jamon and - wait for it - pineapple! Intrigued, the 5 of us headed there for lunch the next day.

Juan and Nubia (who speaks excellent English) were warm and welcoming. We began with Manzanilla sherry and wine, accompanied by beautifully put together pinxtos with peppers, goats cheese and anchovies and jamon. 3 hours later, having sampled most of the pinxtos on the bar and salivated whilst eating the tuna sashimi, anchovie tartare, hamburguesa tartare and countless other dishes from the menu, we left comfortably full and nicely tipsy.

The sherry and wine were some of the best I had ever had. For just two euros a glass (on average) we sampled a fair few and may have even indulged in a couple of bottles because they were so delicious.

We were due to meet friends a couple of days later and (although we had been there for lunchtime again) took them there in the evening. They also returned a couple of times during their stay in San Sebastian.

If you love simple but beautifully cooked food accompanied by refreshing sherry and delicious wine, all provided with warm service and friendly banter, spend some time in Hidalgo 56 (just don't tell everyone about it)!

“Pintxos to die for”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 22, 2013

If you can draw yourself away from the wonderful bars of the Parte Vieja and cross the river to Gros you will find a suburb bar called Hidalgo 56 run by husband and wife Juan (held a Michelin star and a wine expert) and Nubia. This charming couple run a bar that is so packed with goodies it is difficult to know where to begin.
The bar is crammed with wonderful, mouthwatering Pintxos with anchovies, mushrooms, bonito, jamon etc. But it is the pintxos and raciones calientes that are the stars.
For just under 4 euros, yes under 4 euros, you can sample homemade ravioli stuffed with hongos (mushrooms) served with a foie gras sauce. Or try the hamburguesa tartare, or the tuna sashimi, or the beef rib, the merluza, the list goes on.
All served by the friendly couple and accompanied by one of the best wines lists of spanish wines you will find anywhere.
Cannot recommend it highly enough. Superb. Que aproveche!

“Delicious Volcan!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 8, 2013

We visited this little pinxto bar having heard several great reviews, and we weren't disappointed. the 'volcan' - black pudding volcano with egg yolk in the middle - was a particular highlight - it's a must-try for any black pudding fans! We also had lots of yummy pinxtos, goats cheese, smoked salmon among others. Including four glasses of wine, our total bill came to less than 20 euro - incredible value for quality food and wine!

We stumbled upon this wonderful gem of a place completely by accident. The food was delicious, the service friendly and prompt, and the atmosphere, terrific too. Highly, highly, recommended!
