Pension Kaia
Reviewed August 29, 2012

Me and my friends also booked a 3 bed room at pension Kaia. When we got there they gave us a two bed room and across the hall a single bed room with a bathroom, even though we had booked a bed room for three with an own bathroom.
It took us a while until we realized that there were no windows at all in both of the rooms because it was dark outside already.
The two-bed room didn't even had the space to put any suitcases nor did it have a cupboard or anything to put your clothes. We were also not even able to move in the room.
The single bed room had a tiny bathroom, no window, but a cupboard.
Also the sheets were dirty and we found disgusting black hair on them. Also the beds were covered with gross wool-sheets even tho we arrived in the middle of summer.
Furthermore the locks of the doors were somehow broken.
To our surprise we arrived during La Semana Grande which we didn't know. So the guests in the pension where really loud and they were also smoking inside which we were able to smell through the doors.
We told the landlord that this was not what we had booked and he told us that he would refund us the money we had to pay right away if we were able to find a different pension.
Luckily we found another and better place to stay, even though it was during La Semana Grande when everything was booked out.
Conclusion: I would not make any reservations there again.

I would not recommend this place simply because when we arrived they asked for immediate payment (which I provided). They said that my credit card had not worked and asked me to resubmit the number. This I did. On return to the UK, I discovered that I had been charged twice. The card company would not refund - and neither would this hotel. Even an appeal from my Spanish friend had no effect. What a poor show! I was really disappointed.

According to our experience this hostel is absolutely not recommendable. We booked an ensuite double room well in advance for 70 euros. Upon arrival they gave us a double room without window and bathroom across the floor attached to a different room. They requested our passports immediately after our arrival and refused to give it back until we did the payment. So we didnt had the option to change the hostel. The bed linen was dirty, there were several hairs and stains from former guests. The doors were lockable, but for re-opening them we needed 10 minutes, because the doorlock was broken. After a discussion the landlord agreed to let us change the room for the next night. She told us, next morning, we could change the room and get one with window. So I asked next morning for the changing. She told me, well that would be 10 euros more....

so, think well enough before making a reservation here. if theres no other option available in san sebastian and you have to book here, ask for a room with window! The location of the hostel in in the casco viejo is great but can be noisy at night.

The hostal is close to the beach, La Concha, and in the middle of the old city with tapas-bars everywhere around. We were two friends who luckily had asked for a three-beds' room. The room was tiny with just enough place for two persons and suitcases. We had our own bathroom, tiny as well. Maybe as espected at a hostal, but we paid € 100 a night!

The beds were done and we had clean towels every day. The place is probably family-run but don't expect a cosy and personal service. At our arrival, we wanted to call off the two last nights of our 7 nights' reservation, but they denied - while telling other tourists they were full. If you go to San Sebastian you shoud make a reservation well in advance and avoid Hostal Kaia.
