Very much a theme hotel for those who love their Hollywood movies!

One of many many hotels we stayed at during a recent Basque Country food and wine holiday with TravellingMyWay.

Great hotel although in hindsight would have stayed closer to the old town. But if modern, clean and usable is what you want the. This hotel is very good.

We booked two rooms for three nights, one for my husband and me and the other for my mother. Well, my mother certainly got the better room. Even reception mentioned the single rooms are better. She had a balcony and a nice, quiet room. Our double room had a window overlooking nothing with the sounds of the garage door opening and closing all night. Aside from that, the rooms and the themes are amazing. We loved looking at and reading about all of the celebrities. Each room has a DVD player and you can borrow movies featuring the celebrities highlighted in the rooms. The common areas were fun, with Alfred Hitchcock by reception just waiting to take a picture with you. The rooms were clean and comfortable. Reception was helpful and friendly. It was about a 20 minute walk to the main areas of town, but was certainly not an issue. One room for improvement is a need for coffee machines. Nothing was available until 8:15. Maybe Spain isn't as coffee-dependent as America, but we certainly could have used at least a coffee pot at reception a little earlier.

Room Tip: Single rooms are best. Perhaps request one away from the parking garage door.

It was my second time around in what is probably one of the five top cities in the world for me. The palace was completely booked (i.e. hotel Maria Cristina) so this came up as an alternative. Being in such a hot spot in Spain I think it is a good value for the daily rate. Just as importantly I got a real king bed, hopefully this is becoming a trend in Europe. Since I had been to the city before I remembered some of the spots for food, which is generally great in S Sebastian. With that in mind I did not suffer too much in the morning as breakfast was not included. I would just not consider it, at that time it was probably $17.

The location was not great but it was definitely not bad. There was a bus stop across the street and it was reliable in frequency. Also the city is an enjoyable walk. You could probably get to the beach in a brisk 12-15 minute walk.

The room itself was average in size but comfortable. I had an issue with the phone that I reported but I really cannot say they ever took care of it. It came to the point where I had to make calls from a friend's room. The other thing was the Internet. I think I cannot even say it made it to average. In summary, slow and unreliable and heaven forbid you have to send anything over 1 MB.

Even with the shabby Internet and the cost of breakfast I would still come back. The service was ok and anything in the middle in S Sebastian in terms of cost I think would not be worth it.

A nice hotel, decor is modern and chick, even if wear is showing here and there in the rooms.
staff attentive with different level of eagerness to help and english language proficiency.
Cleaning staff managed to enter while I was in the shower in both days i was there even in my checkout morning when they usually wait until you check out before cleaning the room.
location for me was quite nice in the middle of a real neighborhood and not a touristic area (I realize some tourists would find that a disadvantage). anyhow it's 15-20 minutes by foot or 5 by bus (1.6E) to touristic areas.
The reason I'm giving this hotel only 3 points is that for me it wasn't very good at what is most important in a hotel and that is sleeping quality - the room was either too cold or too warm regardless of the AC settings, the bed was just uncomfortable and my room was facing an inner yard which became quite noisy as morning dawned. Maybe it's better in other rooms, can't tell.
Regardless, San Sebastian is a great city to visit, the hotel is not bad and if you get a nice deal on it you would probably enjoy it.

...and we were in Europe for six weeks; most were four stars and a few had five stars.

We prefer modern hotels with sharp decor and fittings and with plenty of room space. Astoria 7 certainly "ticked those boxes". The 20 minute walk to the cbd/old town was compensated by being just across the road from the main bus station for buses to Bilbao (our next destination) and very close to the bus stop for the local town buses.

Add to the above very pleasant and knowledgeable front desk staff and we had everything for a real 5-star experience without the 5-star prices.

in the centre of town and only a short walk to the bars and resturants each room is a tribute to an actor or director great bar attached to the hotel for a nightcap or two buses are cheap & frequent but car parking not so good about 18 euros a night at the hotel, the reception staff were extremely helpful with all the questions we asked overall a nice hotel
