“Generally up to the mark.”
Reviewed April 8, 2013

Besides the hiccup of being given a smoking room on arrival that we had to change everything went very smoothly. Only a short bus ride from the city centre. It can be walked in 20 minutes. Staff all very helpful and tolerated my poor Spanish. I did enjoy the challenge of reading about the film stars and directors whose photos and bios adorn the walls. They also have a unique "on demand" movie list you can access at any time.

This is a modern trendy hotel with a great staff and with great details but... it has some crucial points that make it an average hotel that actually is overtaken by some 3 star hotels...

The negative points:
sleeping quality (a key aspect in a hotel): good bed but the lack of insonorisation to the corridor outside and to the next rooms means that you ear the cars outside and the people passing in the corridor and even the water pipes in the neighboring rooms during the entire evening.... not really what you expect in a 4 star hotel... very bad ...
parking costs ...well some hotels include parking in the room others don't ... i really don't mind paying... but 17 EUR per day ?? this is ridiculous ... there are 5 stars in central capitals in Europe were you pay half of it!!
heating system is difficult to control... you always get your room at 19C.... no chance to cool it in March ...

Positive: great staff and a great library that included access to tons of DVDs that one can borrow to watch in the room... brilliant idea!

however at the end sleeping quality made my final ratting less positive... if one goes to a 4 start and if one pays for it one at least should have a silent room

If you have a car and are driving around the Basque area, this is a decent hotel to stay for 3-4 nights to explore the city and surrounding. It has a car park which directly connects to the hotel but make sure you tell them you have a car as its not that big. There was a minor booking error where we had requested a smoking room and they didn't have one for the first 2 nights - that was fine and was remedied when one became available. A slight draw back was that to experience the pinxto bars, you will have to walk at least 20-30mins into town which is a little far to walk back if you've had a couple of drinks. Overall, the rooms were clean and service reasonable.

My wife and I arrived in San Sebastian by bus and found the hotel very conveniently located next to the bus depot. It was about a 15 minute walk to the old town but the local bus stopped directly outside the hotel and for 1.55 € you could be in the old town within 5 minutes.
The reception staff were extremely friendly and helpful and spoke English well. One evening they helped arrange a dinner reservation for us.
Breakfast was good. The continental selection was fairly comprehensive and included such items as tomato bread and local Basque yogurt. The hot food was cooked to your order and was okay.
We stayed in a King room (901) and it was really good. It was probably one of the quietest hotel rooms I've ever stayed in. There was plenty of room to move around, enough wardrobe space and hangers, and the bathroom was very clean and modern. My only complaint is that there were only two English TV channels available - one on cable and one on DTV. For a hotel that is based on a cinema theme, perhaps they could run an in-house movie channel in various languages.
Overall, our stay at the Astoria7 was very pleasant. For just over 100€ per night, I consider this hotel to be good value

We stayed at this hotel for a few night last December around New Year's Eve. It was our second stay in the last 2 years. The hotel is located where an old cinema used to be and so it is designed based on a movie theme. From the decor at the lobby, with a row of old cinema seats on which Alfred Hitchcock is seating, to the rooms which are named after movie stars and decorated with pictures of the relevant star, to the books in the library and even the ambient music, everything is related to Hollywood. A very well implemented concept that gives this boutique hotel an unique character. Since it was christmas, even the tree was made of old film reels and film strips.
Rooms are bright, functional with contemporary furniture and with good amenities, including free wifi and tv with plenty of international channels. The only comment is that the storage space is somewhat limited.
Breakfast is very good with a wide choice of items. Service overall is very attentive and friendly.
There's also underground parking at the hotel.
It is in a good location just 15 min walk from the centre of San Sebastian.
We are very satisfied with our experience and we hope to stay at Astoria 7 the next time we visit San Sebastian.

Slightly odd with the movie star themed rooms (we were in the Jeremy Irons room!!) but otherwise a decent fairly basic hotel. Bit of a walk to the centre but nothing too dramatic. A fine choice if you are not overly fussy.

This is a magnificent hotel to stay in if you like the movie world! Alfred Hitchcock is sitting in the foyer reading a newspaper as you check in and every room is themed for a past actor or actress from the golden days of Hollywood. We stayed in the Sigourney Weaver room which was full of reminders about her acting past. Clean rooms and friendly staff make this a worthwhile place to stay when visiting San Sebastian although it is a little away from the old part of town down by the port. About a 15 minute walk or a short bus ride.
