My partner and I booked a double private room for our first two nights in San Sebastian. Upon arrival we were told to leave our bags in the hall and come back in an hour so that our room could be prepared. When we went back the door to our room was open so we assumed that it was ok to go in... a couple of minutes later the owner came in and started telling us off, removing our bags from the room and telling us to get out so he could sweep. There were a number of times that he made us and others feel uncomfortable. I really just wanted to get out of there so we moved to Pension Edorta which was a relief -they were very welcoming.
The room that we stayed in was built on a platform that I stubbed my toes on a few times and was extremely noisy.... you could even hear the floor being swept through the walls. To look at the place is actually really quite nice and modern - has a bit of an IKEA look and feel to it.
In terms of the owners people skills, he said to us on leaving that he runs the backpackers for 6 months then goes places that he does not have to deal with people - in short he does not really enjoy the interaction and it shows.
I would not recommend Kaixo to my friends - there are too many other options in San Sebastian to put up with such a rude man!

To be honest, aside from the location, I didn't like the hostel. It was more like an apartment; we stayed from a Monday to a Friday and not once did anyone even do so much as empty the bins in the rooms. The room we got was a twin and we were charged €40 each which was pretty expensive considering it barely had enough room for the two beds, and had nowhere to hang your towel let alone your clothes. The owner greeted us on our arrival with a decidely unpleasant demeanour and accused us of arriving three hours late (I had emailed him three days previously to tell him I couldn't confirm my arrival time, but that it would be late afternoon - he himself had responded to my email!). He grunted that he could have spent the day on the beach instead of waiting around for us. It didn't get much better after that. There were builders in from 8 in the morning making the most awful racket with radial saws and hammers and when my friend asked Jon if the builders were going to be working every morning he responded in such a petulant and rude manner I was quite shocked. He asked us what we wanted him to do, go out and kill the workers to stop the noise? He then offered, in a sarcastic tone, to move us to another building out of the city. I said it was fine, we'd stay where we were. But when I tried to change the subject and ask for fresh towels (on our third day) he grabbed a bundle and practically flung them on my bed. This man's attitude is not one that bodes well with working with the public. I spoke to other guests during our four day stay and they too had been subjected to encounters similar to mine; him lecturing backpackers on buying bottled water (it was well into the thirties when we stayed there for goodness sake), to his generally arrogant manner of speaking down to you, or surly silences when passing you in the corridor. Also, he charged €1 per hour to store your bags (per person!) after you check out! I was beyond shocked at this miserly attitude. Jon may come across as helpful but it is a very thin veneer. He did give us guides to the local area but warned us to return the pamphlets to the common area. We left them behind and got the necessary info from the tourist office around the corner. At least they didn't lecture us. Unsuprisingly, I would not recommend staying in Kaixo hostel, although San Sebastian is absolutely stunning. What a pity this rude little man left such a sour taste after an otherwise pleasant visit to to a lovely, welcoming city.

Kaixo hostel was in fact an apartment with several rooms and a common kitchen. The kitchen had good equipment, e.g. micro wave, washing machine, large fridge and a stove. Rooms had a safety deposit, free of charge. I suppose other rooms had a window, but mine didn’t. No TV in the rooms or in the common area. The sound insulation…well there wasn’t one. The apartment was a bit worn out, especially the bathrooms were not in good shape.

The location was perfect; near the beaches, in the old town and a market hall opposite of the pedestrian street. A big plus for the free internet access, which was available on the other street. At the time I was there, there were a lot of young people from around the world. Good variation of small and bigger shops nearby. You must try the mouth watering pastries from the bakeries!
