“Friendly pension, great location, but a bit disappointing”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 9, 2009

I booked the Pension Altair after reading all the glowing reviews here. I have to say the room was lovely but the bathroom was pretty dirty. Hair all over the floor, mildew round the bath and shower and the loo was dirty. A disappointment, as the room was really stylish and modern with a fabulous stone arched window. As with previous reviewers, we found the owners / managers to be really friendly. Something that's not clear on their website: the reception isn't manned all day. Don't turn up at 4pm because there's nobody there until 5pm. Overall a good place to stay, just a little let down by the cleaning, sorry.

I spent a week here with my fiancé and has a great time. It's clean, in a great location and a real hidden gem. The staff are friendly and there's free internet and Wifi. The only downside is that they rooms can be a little hot, so if they had aircon it would be perfect.

Pension Altair was our first stop during our 2.5 week long honeymoon all across Spain. We had pre-arranged a check in time with Ricardo since we knew we would be arriving when the reception area would be closed. Unfortunately, we arrived before Ricardo and panicked for about 10 minutes when we thought we had missed him. Luckily he showed up just as we were about to leave and look for other accomodations!

We stayed in room #2 overlooking the street, which added to the ambience. As we read in other reviews, it was decorated in the Ikea style which was new, modern and comfortable. The bathroom was spacious with excellent water pressure in the shower. This was the only place we stayed in Spain that did not have hair dryers available in the the bathrooms, so pack one if you need it.

The pension is located the the Gros district which is a short walk (about 10 minutes max) from the Parte Vieja. Even with our limited Spanish and no Euskera we were able to figure out our way around with the city and even get around on the buses.

The only downsides we found to staying at Pension Altair were that 1) There was no A/C available. The temperature was well into the high 80s (farenheit) in mid-August during our stay. 2) There is only one long pillow that runs the length of the double bed. While we found the pillow asthetically pleasing, my husband and I found it difficult to share.

I would recommend this pension when staying in San Sebastian.

We stayed in Pension Altair for a long weekend in early July. The pension was fantastic - much more modern than we expected and it made very a very comfortable stay. While the location is a slight walk from the Old Town, it only took about 5 minutes and benefited from less external noise because it was more of a residential area.

We didn't spend much time in the pension, but it had all the conveniences you would expect from a hotel room, and the price was so much less than what the equivalent hotel rooms were going for.

The downside were the walls were a little thin, and so it could be a little noisy at times.

We spent three nights at Pension Altair in May, spending Euros 50 a night for mid-week and Euros 63 for the Friday. The location and rooms are probably the best value for money in San Sebastian and the owners, Ricardo and Nadalya, are two of the friendliest we've come across.

Caveats - the reception is not manned all the time and hours are a little flexible so if you have an early morning departure, make sure you check out the night before. Also, room cleaning/maid service is erratic. However, these are niggardly complaints and overall, we had a very positive impression.

It's a 5 min walk to the beach, 15 mins to the old quarter. Rooms are quite spacious, modern, with extremely comfortable beds. It's generally quiet but because of the small reception area, you can be disturbed by other guests checking in/out or just chatting at the front desk. Parking (paid) is available at various locations close by and free parking further away. There is Wi-Fi plus a PC/Internet access in the Recption area.

Ricardo provided us with maps, restaurant and bar recommendations, offered to help with bookings, looked up tel. numbers and was generally very helpful. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in San Sebastian and the great weather probably helped !

P.S. It's worth taking the funicular - great views over the bay.

The man at the fron desk was extremely helpful and gave me great food recommendations. I'm a foodie and can be very selective on where I eat, I try to avoid touristy cafe's and diners whenever possible. The places he suggested had some of the best food I've ever had.
I had a very clean double room, a great bathroom and FREE WIFI. This is crucial!

The location was about 2-3 blocks from the surfer's beach, which I prefer over the touristy Concha beach. A quick 5-10 minute walk brings you into the old part of town, where the streets are loud and full of tourists. The Pension is in a great location for a quieter and more realistic perspective on San Sebastian.

I have travelled extensively in Spain and think this has to be one of the best places I have stayed! Once again I would like to thank trip advisors for all the advice. What a great place. Lovely staff, elegant rooms, gorgeous deco, super clean. I love the location in Gros, near the Playa de Zurriola. Great traditional patisseries near-by and we even found a veggie restaurant- Toldone around the corner. Book now- I say!
