Description: Guria restaurant in Bilbao is a short walk across Doña Casilda Park from the iconic Euskalduna Palace and worth every step. Guria has widely known as a temple of traditional Basque gastronomy for nearly sixty years – ten at this location – and the kitchen is still under the watchful eye of chef Genaro Pildain and his partner Carlos. Guria is divided into two parts. The luxurious, formal dining room is decorated in the English style in tones of taupe with leather seating, thick carpets and drapes that can be pulled to create private enclaves. The buzzing, brasserie-like bistrot, with its more affordable prices, features a long wood and brass bar, chequered tile floors, and an informal air. Wherever you sit, do not miss one of the two famous cod dishes, either simmered very slowly ‘al pil-pil’ or a la Vizcaina, as Pildain is known as the King of Cod. Wines are service are exemplary

“Old world classic service excellent food”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 21, 2012

Had a superb lunch - the best fish soup followed by cod fish- very comfortable leather armchairs - excellent linens - very good service and a great local white wine - txacoli - went there after a morning at Guggenheim preceded by a coffee on the terrace overlooking the museum of the silken domino hotel (stayed there previously and is top class) -in Guria make sure to book restaurant at the back.

“Overpriced and disappointing”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 24, 2012

We visited Guria on a Wednesday evening in June and ate in the restaurant. The service was very attentive but we felt uncomfortable as we were the only diners all evening. I don't particularly like being watched while I eat. However the big disappointment was the food. This is supposedly one of the best restaurants in Bilbao, and maybe we we unlucky, but our meal was decidedly average for a high end place. I had the famous local dish bacalao pil pil, which turned out to be two slabs of chewy cod coated with a very indifferent sauce. My husband had lobster thermidor which he pronounced ok but not a patch on our local seafood place at home. Starters were also not up to scratch. We had eaten a far better meal the evening before at Serantes11 for half the price. Very disappointing and very expensive for what we had.

“very expensive”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 6, 2012

It is considered one of the best restaurants in Bilbao. I read in a previous review that somebody has found the restaurant full: we have been there for dinner on a Saturday night, but from the beginning to the end we have been the only ones. The atmosphere and attendance are of high class, but we have not found anything particular in the food. For a normal dinner of 2 persons (starter, main course, dessert, wine and water) we have spent 160 euros! (similar dinners you can find in Spain at 30-40 euros per person).

“Expensive, good service, faultless food”

High end basque cuisine. Fish is cooked to perfection. The resturant was full when we went and the staff were stretched but attentive.

“Brilliant food, charming service, fantastic value”

Ate in the bistro rather than the restaurant. A memorable meal, that was far better than a far more expensive one we had the following night.
