Description: Etxanobe restaurant is amazingly sited above Bilbaos second iconic building, the gleaming Palacio Euskalduna. Etxanobe is one of the hottest dining spots in the world right now, drawing breathless reviews from food-writers and food-lovers for the grand cuisine of chef/owner Fernando Canales. The post-modern dcor of the two dining rooms one of them available for private hire features a fabulous ruched fabric ceiling, wittily skirted lighting, white linens and seating, and unforgettable views over the estuary and the Guggenheim from the terrace. Light pours in everywhere. Innovation is on display in every mouthful that emerges from Canales kitchen. Theres no menu of the day; you choose a la carte or a series of tasters. Dishes change monthly and may include deceptively simple descriptions like starter of lasagne of anchovies, main course of sole with pil-pil sauce and trout eggs, and home made dessert of cinnamon and rice puff-pastry with milk, though youd be mad to miss the little chocolate bombs. The wines are excellent and the service is a mission unto itself in a word, sublime.

This place is terrific..4 pre-starters: a dizzing array;
Patridge - fresh, delicious
Salmon - 'smoked' marinaded in sugar, raw in the middle - but delicate taste, exquisite ; white asparagus warm and cold and sweet: unctious ; rape asado sobre compote de cebolla roja - a revelation, salty and sweet; lomos de pichon (pigeon) asados con patata morada - an outstanding expression of a confident culinary genius; costillas de euskai txerri Maskarada! Chinese flavours perhaps? - faultless cooking; 'Cooked' ice cream - chef at the table: breathless!; chocolate buttons to finish...say no more.....and he is a really cool, friendly guy into the bargain. He spends time with all the guests and exudes charm. A gem of a place!

“Beyond our expectations”
Reviewed April 27, 2013

From my experience, the best restaurants to visit are the ones with 1 Michelin stars - the restaurant is still unpretentious and retains its originality.
Etxanobe served truly excellent food. What stays in my memory is the scrambled eggs with truffles and their steak, as well as the to-die-for dessert. They only had 2 servers for the whole restaurant, so service was a bit slow, though food came quite efficiently. There was a lovely view of the river.
It was great value for money (as we ordered the tasting course) and definitely worth a visit!

“Great food”
Reviewed March 31, 2013

Delicious food - we had a 6 course set menu for our large party and it was excellent. Although on the top floor of a convention centre, the inside of the restaurant is very nice. The service was excellent too.

“Excellent option for dinner in Bilbao”
Reviewed March 9, 2013

Excellent food (try the carpacio de cigalas), good service, very decent prices. the surroundings are not the best, the restaurant is located at the 3rd floor of the convention center, so plan on reserving a cab to pick you up, but this is an excellent restaurant.

“Expensive for what it is!”
Reviewed March 3, 2013

Four of us had dinner there on a Friday night.

We each had three courses from the a la carte menu. In addition, we also had two bottles of wine and aperitifs. The cost per person (including tip) was 112 EUR.

The food was good but not exceptional. We felt there was an over-emphasis on presentation and gimmickery rather than the flavour of the food. The decor is quite formal.

The service was pleasant enough.

We dined at Aizian the following night and were much more impressed with the food, value for money and ambiance there.
