“A good basic hotel”
Reviewed July 2, 2012

We've stayed here twice now and it does exactly what it says on the tin: accommodation is fairly basic but entirely adequate and spotlessly clean, staff are superbly helpful, and the hotel is a short walk from the old town. A bonus is that there is secure parking: a real advantage if, like us, you have a car full of Spanish and Portuguese wine. One warning though: no breakfast. But we like the Bilbi a lot and will certainly go there again. And for the price, I think it's a bargain.

Owing to an internet snag my booking was duplicated. As soon as this was noticed from the Agency's Confirmation I contacted them and, whilst I waited, they immediately contacted this hotel and believed they had resolved this overbooking. However when I arrived, the hotel had not amended this booking and subsequently charged for the error! That was: two people for two nights each, instead of, correctly, one person only for two nights. I contacted the Agency again who had made a record of the previous facts and they again raised them with this hotel's management who declined to make any refund. The Agency has, as a gesture of goodwill, offered me a generous complimentary voucher but it does not absolve this hotel's attitude!

Nevertheless the hotel itself is situated in a residential part of the city. Approximately 10-15 minutes walk from both the Euskotren - Atxuri Station and the Renfe/Feve Abando stations. Google's Map directions are correct. The hotel is up a steep hill from the riverside but there are buses from the bus station to the stop at the junction of the Calle Miribilla and the Gorte Kalea [about one minute to the hotel]. My room was clean with a nice view over the city. The bed was comfortable with only one pillow, a desk chair and no refrigerator. The table was occupied by an elderly TV with a faulty picture; Spanish channels only. The shower room was of a good size, clean and everything worked. So did the elevators because this building is high. The 3x Reception staff had little English. No food available and any drinks are from vending machines [not their's apparently] but there is a corner-shop close by. For food they direct you to the 'old town' which is about five minutes walk away across the bridge over the narrow river. So, if like me, you arrive late in the evening, ensure that you have already eaten. Shops etc start at Abando and the Guggenheim is on the same riverbank about 1 kilometre away. The riverbanks are landscaped and are attractive. I would suggest this hotel is ideal for backpackers but for those looking for a little more comfort, perhaps try the TRYP by the Feve station, as there seems a shortage of 3* hotels in this city.

In regard to the comments elsewhere regarding the local 'street trade', by walking up & down the two roads opposite the bus stop to the riverbank, I was never aware that it existed.

Room Tip: Request a room from about the 6th floor upwards overlooking over the city.

Good clean rooms, bedsheets, bathroom and helpful staff. It IS near an unfavourable part of town but this can be avoided by heading straight down to the river. Stayed here while travelling to watch Athletic Club vs Manchester United. We walked just about everywhere but there are good transport links nearby. Overall a good hotel for the price.

The hotel is in a weird neighborhood (with a lot of ladies of the night). The rooms are ok, the staff is helpful. Aircon, hairdryer (which didn't blow hot air). Were woken up a few times during the night (you can hear everything through the thin walls). All in all: if you need a place just to come back late and sleep - good choice.

Very comfortable mattress, new bathroom. Simple but comfortable. The corridors have no decoration at all, unless the owners were looking for the "unfinished warehouse" style (you get used to it). Street view rooms are warmer, even though all of them have central heating / aircon. I stayed 4-5th november 2011, in single and double rooms.
The price in low season (29€ single, 39€ double / bed only) it's even better than in the "pensiones" as in Bilbi Hotel you have private bathroom.
The red light district? You won't see it unless you want to stroll around. From "Casco Viejo" (old city) to the hotel it takes a 5 minute walk crossing a bridge. You will meet a restaurant and a bar at the end of this bridge. When it doesn´t rain, people enjoys drinking outside of the bar, overlooking the "Ria".
In general, highly recommended. Low season, great price. High season, better go to "pensiones" if you are a budget traveller.
Helpful and friendly recepcionist (Lander).

Room Tip: Street view rooms, the others are darker

This is a well located, good value place to stay in Bilbao. The room was small, functional and clean; a few minutes from the old town and about 15-20 mins walk to the Guggenheim. The staff were polite and friendly, and spoke good English. If you want a simple room for the night that does not cost the earth, this is a decent option.

Room Tip: A top floor room is less noisy
