I first stayed here a few months after it had first opened and was under Sheraton management, approximately a decade later and I was back.

This hotel is officially a five star property, given my experience with other five star properties in Spain, it is without doubt right at the bottom end of that category in terms of service, in fact I cannot see what differentiates this hotel from a four star. When I arrived no doorman came out to help with my luggage; there isn’t really any valet parking (which given the horribly tight car park pillars would make a lot of sense), and the rooms are only serviced once a day and there isn’t even a basic turndown.

The room itself is tired, and the décor hasn’t been refreshed – even a lick of paint here and there would help – since the hotel first opened. Fortunately the style back then was very contemporary so it hasn’t dated, but rather just looks a bit rough around the edges. The facilities make it perfectly comfortable and the position is excellent (but then again Bilbao is only a small city anyway).

I didn’t sample any of the food available as it didn’t look particularly exciting especially given there are many better options within a five minutes walk from the hotel.

Overall, at the low rates that are available, you are not going to be disappointed with this hotel, but just don’t go there expecting any services you normally expect from a five star property, otherwise you will end up being disappointed.

Had a high floor (9th) with beautiful views of the park. Bed was so comfortable, especially after an overnight flight from Canada. We booked the hotel with breakfast, even though it was a lot more for breakfast, but we were worried about where we would eat in the morning. Well we did not regret it. It was great. Even Champagne is included and the coffe was fabulous. Hotel is located next to the Tram and easy to get around town.

We recently stayed at the Melia, Bilbao for one night prior to returning to the UK after our hols.My wife booked it via their website a few months ago, inc car parking. Its very central, within 10 mins stroll to the Guggheneim and surprisingly quiet for a city centre hotel. Our room was big enough for 2 kingsize beds, and the bathroom was big.We ate at one of the restaurants in the hotel and our meal was excellent!
The car park is underground and secure and is well worth the 23 euros charge, the room was 99 euros and it was certainly reasonable. We intend to return and spend a couple of days at this hotel and explore this interesting city .

Room Tip: Book a stay in August as the locals are on holiday and the hotel is quiet

Very good location. Close to all Bilbao attractions. Bright large rooms and nice reception area. Very good small gym with views of Bilbao countryside. Small outside pool which was fine to use in early May.

i have mixed feelings about this hotel. the room itself was ok although it felt a bit like there is a lack of maintenance (missing paint, tv stand loose etc.). the breakfast was really disappointing. the scrambled eggs tasted weird and were almost liquid. the orange juice seemed to be sparkling. anyways i didn't feel well in my stomach after that.

then hotel doesn't have a driveway for loading/offloading. you basically have to drive onto the pavement but nobody will help you because there is nobody.

For the price we paid (got a deal on Expedia) this place was great compared to some of the other hotels we stayed in on our recent trip to spain. Ok so the decor is not a good in some places as it clearly has been in the past but its far from 'tired'. The hotel itself is in a lovely little location on the river just back from the Guggenheim, not too far to walk into town for drinks. Staff were very professional and helpful. Bedroom was very nice, comfortable bed, nice view, bathroom lovely with separate bath and shower, room service not too expensive and food was good. Wifi signal not very strong in our room but useable!
Swimming pool nice enough, gym is functional changing facilities could do with an update, they have signs up saying this will be done soon? beauty treatments and massage available on site (we booked a massage the day we arrived and they fit us in that day which was nice!
Overall I would recommend this hotel and would definitely return. Bilbao is a fab city and the Melia is a good base to explore the city.

We have just returned from Bilbao having stayed in the melia.
We got a sweet deal on booking.com,
It's such an amazing location we couldn't of got better,5 min walk from The Guggenheim, central for the city centre, overlooking a beautiful park on one side & the river on the other.
Hotel pool was fab & heated so that was a bonus, restaurant food not expensive & of a reasonable standard, very nice actually.
Staff exceptional, they are externally polite & seemed genuinely happy at work, our room had an amazing view, very comfortable bed, amazing bathroom, only negative the decor was a bit tired & it had an oder of having previously been a smoking room & I detest smoking,im sure they
WOuld of relocated us but to be honest the view compensated for it.
We will most definitely return to this hotel & the beautiful city of bilbao & its neighbour San Sebastian.
