Stayed here for 2 nights in June. The location was very good and the room was pretty simple but clean and comfortable. The decor slightly dated but nothing bad. The reception were friendly and helpful even when their english was limited. There were also computers with internet and a shared lounge space which was nice. Would recommend to others, certainly good value.

I was warmly welcomed by the 20-something son who has an engineering degree and a einning smile He offered me an upgrade, at no additional cost, to a LARGE room -- a near-suite -- even though I had booked a single room at their lowest prices. I accepted, after he showed me the difference in room size, happy to deposit my bag and explore the city while giving the maid time to clean the larger room. It turned out that Insonloved Bilbao I asked to remain a third day. Luckily Hostal Begoña had a room -- they were fully FULLY booked all of the following week -- but would have to take the smaller room. 'No problem,' it seemed only fair as I was but one person paying for this smaller quarters anyway. I would gladly leave my bag at the reception after my second night so hotel staff could clean the rooms and affect the transition. But, Lo! A few minutes after agreeing to what I thought a completely fair arrangement, that nice young man called me in my room to say that he had found a way to arrange things so I could stay in my large room, with commodious bath, if small, but ingeniously-doored shower stall, mini-fridge, large-screen TV, and firm double bed!!!

The young man's father was just as friendly and helpful with directions. He suggested the PERFECT Pinxto tasting tour (PINCHOS = Tapas, heightened to a delicious basque art form) and taught me several useful phrases in Euskadi so I could order the local wine and fish dishes I so enjoyed and also share a few words of polite thanks for them.

I could have passed a pleasant week in this city, had more time -- but chose instead to see a couple Basque Beaches before ending this trip in Madrid.

Longer notes below.
be sure to WALK, WALK, WALK, everywhere in town -- the traditional Casco Viejo AND its neighboring hamlet built into a steep hill and fully outfitted with outdoor escalators and elevators; The Goog for at least five hours, inside and out, Pintxos bar hopping, new city wandering, river and bridge watching, and, if time permits, take a tour of the town and buy a pass which offers discounts on transport and sites, museums other than the Goog ...

Disoriented upon my first foray in Bulbao I struggled to find this hotel which sits on a quiet street leas than two full blocks from The RENFE station. The security guard at this train station gave me a tourist map and explained that though the hotel on Amistad St (aptly named as all who work at Begiña proved friendly indeed -- and all the locals who gather at the bars/cafés and frequent the shops along this short block were obviously quite happy in one another's company too) lay a two-minute walk (with luggage!) away, he couldn't find the words to describe exactly how to cross the roundabout and turn right twice -- or exit another door, cross a pedestrian courtyard, descend some steps and make two lefts. No worries, My first trip took a full five minutes, but subsequent journeys to/past the RENFE Station all lasted under two minutes.

Beware, however, if you arrive in Bilbao via the other train station, from, say, San Sebastian, where RENFE fears to tread and a local Basque train that plies the sylvan countryside does go. Hostal Begiña lies just across the Navarra bridge on the "new" side of town and the regionall Eusko Tren station lies a 10-15 minute, charming walk away in the older Casco Viejo. If you arrive by bus, you'll find yourself deposited all the way across the newer side of town. Despair not, fine voyager -- Bilbao sports a clean and efficient subway that will whisk you from Bus terminal to near the aforementioned RENFE stop. Or, of you have light bags and sturdy legs, fortified by a good sense of direction or friendly aspect and gregarious nature, or some workable admixture thereof, you can set out to discover the less touristy but (once a block or two away from the bus station, busy/noisy/redolent of, well, bus station odors, as all such places are, and across the widest thoroughfare in all the city) calm, clean, and comfortably livable/walk able streets that lead to HB. Note: You'll be surprised, if you do opt for to take this route, by your first glimpse of Gehry's Guggenheim ("El Goog") as it appears, all a jumble, at the far end of a north-running street.

Stayed here for 2 nights last week. Location ideal for old town, Guggenheim, shopping etc. Good breakfast at bar ('Lar') directly opposite. Room was simple but comfortable with small balcony, staff are friendly and helpful. Can't fault it and will stay there again.

Very centrally located, walking distance from the Guggenheim and the Old Town. The reception is friendly, helpful and English speaking. Our room,104 Junior Suite, was spacious, clean, well lit, the bed comfortable and the plumbing worked. This is an old hotel but inexpensive. We would certainly come again.

We stayed 3 nights in May. The location is perfect. A few blocks from both RENFE and FEVE (coastal narrow guage) RR stations, from the old town, tram stops, good eating, shopping, El Corte Ingles which has everything you need from supermarket to clothing. Located on a pedestrian street, it is very quiet at night with services close by. The staff are extremely helpful. All speak some English. Some are completely fluent. The desk is staffed 24 hours. There is a very nice livingroom area with comfortable seating and a large library of books (most are Spanish, but some in other languages in cluding travel books). The price is a great value. Everything is clean and well maintained. Some would prefer carpeting in the rooms, but I prefer surfaces that can be kept clean which these are: squeaky clean linoleum floors in the bedroom and tile in the bathroom. Beautiful wooden stairs and shelving in the rooms. Comfortable beds. No view, but this was not important to us.

Room Tip: We had the last room available, which was the first one at the top of the stairs on the second floor...

I stayed here last month in March for 5 nights and this was a fantastic hostal in Bilbao. Central, cheap, clean, warm, quiet and adjacent to all the main sights with a tram stop (and train stations) a stone’s throw away that runs straight to the Guggenheim and the main bus station, you can’t beat this place for a visit to wonderful Bilbao. The staff were extremely friendly and accommodating. I particularly liked the fridge in the spacious room (for storing refrigerated Spanish snacks and drinks) and a dinky, wooden mini clothes dryer you could hang your washing on – a couple of useful additions for travellers. If you are visiting the area, make sure you take a couple of bus/train trips out to the surrounding countryside – it’s amazingly scenic on the coast and inland. 10/10 for the Begona, if I ever am fortunate enough to visit Bilbao again, it would be my first choice.

Room Tip: Ask for a room facing the back - although there's no view, it's so quiet in this busy part o...

Very good location. Near the old town and shopping areas. Prior to the Guggenheim Museum are within walking distance. Near many bus and tram line passes and subway line. The central x \ railway station across the street. Sam was very friendly and nice. In general, the lobby seating area and a library. Here are general computers with internet access (as we learned). There is Wi-Fi in the room. Hour front desk, all the time there is someone from the staff. Remained located on two floors. The room has everything you need, including even a fridge with a minibar, a large closet. Plumbing serviceable. A window with a French balcony looked out on the side, from the main, street, night was shumnova somewhere, but did not interfere with sleep. Worked well in the spring of central heating. Very nice girl respeshen, suggested that it was necessary, and chat. Before the bus to the airport 10-15 minutes on foot. In sleduyuyuschy dwell times in the rest.
