Gran Hotel Domine Bilbao

We recently spent 3 nights at the Domine and although it was a lovely hotel, there was nothing that stood out over other hotels in Bilbao, giving it the five star rating. Let's start with the positive, the hotel is very well located with a lovely roof worth a drink or dinner. The lobby is fun, funky and has a great bar. The staff is courteous and efficient. Now, on to the other observations. The room is fine, good bathroom, average products but for an internationally known hotel, there is almost nothing on TV besides local stations, The room is fairly appointed but with no bells and whistles. One thing that bugged me was that you have to request robes...really, one more thing I have to do? Another thing that bothered me is when I made my reservation I was under the assumption that it included breakfast, like its 4 star neighbor down the road, however, we were informed that we did not have breakfast included and it would be 25 euro per person. All in all, go to the Hotel Miro, just down the street. Better and more personal property with a charm that seems to have alluded the Domine.

Room Tip: try to get a room with view but it still will be too close to the guggenheim to really appreciate it...

This hotel, situated directly opposite the Guggenheim museum, was perfect. Perfect view (book for a Guggenheim room- 5th floor), perfect beds, perfect service and perfect breakfast. Bilbao is really a city to visit. Go to Bilbao and book this hotel.

Stayed in Nov 2012. The complementary upgrade to a large room at the front with a view of the Guggenheim and £200 for two nights on last minute certainly added to the experience, but nevertheless this an excellent hotel for couples, individuals, business and families. The rooms are good, spacious, modern and despite the road outside the noise isn't noticeable due to the insulation. The cocktails are a bit pricey in the bar and a bit strong, but apart from this small thing it is excellent all round. And it is 100m from the Guggenheim.

Our fourth visit and it retains its supreme comfort and style. Efficient and courteous check-in, spacious room with fabulous views of eth Guggenheim directly outside the window, very plush bed and lovely breakfast on the roof terrace. Nice new restaurant on teh top floor too.

We stayed here 3 nights. Situated directly opposite the Guggenheim museum, this hotel makes a perfect base for a Bilbao city break.

The taxi from the airport to the hotel cost €20 and takes about 10 minutes. Apart from the Guggenheim, it is a short walk from the hotel to the funicular railway, the tram, metro and bus stops are close by, and it is a pleasant 25min stroll along the river to the old town.

Whether the hotel merits a 5* status is debatable. It is not an imposing building, the reception area is compact and there is an air of minimalism. Some rooms have excellent museum views, though many do not. There are some quirky aspects – the room had glass separating the bedding area from the bathroom with the shower being open plan; there are glass lifts; a rock tower, a pleasant waterfall – though the restaurants looked ordinary. And pricey. The continental breakfast at €25 is possibly priced to deter those that haven’t pre-booked breakfasts. It is not a major issue as there are some pleasant restaurants nearby where breakfasts are €5-10. All the staff were particularly pleasant and made us feel most welcome. There were also nice touches like boiled sweets on the reception counter. And we found the wifi/internet speed slower that we’re used to.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a view of the Guggenheim museum

Perhaps spendy, depending on the rate you 'negotiate' on the Internet, this is a beautiful hotel in a location across the street (!) from the incredible city park and Guggenheim (Frank Gehry design) Art Museum. The staff are (almost) universally friendly and English-competent, the food is quite good, the complimentary buffet breakfast on the top-floor restaurant (with stunning view of Bilbao) was absolutely superb! Would return here in a heartbeat, and probably would pay a premium to do so!

Only stayed for one night as we were catching a flight out of Bilbao the following day. Hotel decor is modern and is very tastefully done. Executive room was spacious with luxurious bathroom. The breakfast served on the roof top over looking the museum in the morning was delicious.
Only down side was the price for an evening meal. At 35 euro per main course we felt it was a little expensive and headed in to town.
Overall an immaculate hotel with great access to the city or ol town.
