An excellent tour through the old town and commercial district of Bilbao, with plenty of personal input and interaction and details of Bilbao's history to put the streets in context. Bibao Greeters contacted us prior to the meeting to find out our specific interests. Ana (our guide) also brought along her sons to help keep our 5-year-old amused during the 2-hour walk. Plenty of recommendations of more things to do and Ana even ordered our lunch for us...

In June 2012 this year, my husband, brother and best friend traveled to Bilbao to experience some of the Basque country. As our initial plans for one of our days fell through, we emailed Bilbao Greeters (after reading the reviews on Trip Advisor) to see if they could squeeze us in at the last moment.

We were incredibly lucky to have Marivi answer our email and agree to meet us for a few hours in the morning. We later found out that it was her day off but that she decided to meet with us anyway. This in itself really speaks volume to the wonderful and committed greeters.

And how lucky we were! Marivi gave us a wonderful introduction to Bilbao and in the short time we had with her, was able to tailor the experience to our interests For example my friend is interested in architecture so she made sure to point out some of the interesting buildings around the city. I love libraries so she took us to a beautiful library I would have otherwise completely missed. Not only that but Marivi was patient, funny and kind and answered all of the questions we had and provided us with a great introduction into Basque culture and history.

We all fell in love with Bilbao and the warmth and friendliness of the Basque people and without a doubt, our experience with Marivi and Bilbao Greeters really shaped our wonderful experience.

Thank you so much Marivi!!!!

We'd already had time for a walk around the old town and some highlights. But of course we didn't really know what we were looking at.
We met up with our greeter (Maribe) our first evening and talked about the things that interested us. We then went for a walk around the town on the Thursday. It took most of the day and the only difficulty was the heat - well over 30C. We were shown locations we otherwise wouldn't have known about; we were told things about locations that we otherwise wouldn't have known; we were recommended shops, restaurants and other attractions that we otherwise wouldn't have gone to, and it was all genuine personal recommendation, rather than commercially motivated.
We'll definitely look out for Greeters in any other towns or cities we visit. It's great to get a local perspective and a sense of real local pride.
There's no charge - if you enjoy it you can make a voluntary donation. So why wouldn't you??!

I would encourage everyone to put the Basque region and Bilbao on their itinerary for a trip to Spain. In my opinion the food is the best in Iberia and the wine is terrific. There is, of course, "The Goog" and that is certainly worth a trip. But Bilbao itself is a really charming city - neighborhoods, architecture & cafes that are not "over-touristed" and are just really nice places to hang out. I particularly recommend contacting Bilbao Greeters for your introduction to the city. While it is true that you can get around Bilbao with a map pretty easily, you will not have nearly the sense of history, culture and background that these very well informed and amiable guides can give you in a half day or a day. There is much more than "The Goog", and spending some time with the Bilbao Greeters is definitely worth it.

Whilst searching for inspiration for places to see during our limited time in Bilbao I stumbled upon the Greeters scheme, which seemed a fantastic way of getting a snapshot of the City rather than just wandering around on our own. As a party of 6, with ages ranging from 64 to mid 20's, I did wonder if it would suit us all, but it certainly did. Ana our Greeter could not have worked harder to ensure that we had a brilliant day. She was interesting, knowledgeable, enthusiastic, and full of energy all at the same time!! During our occasional stop for a drink, we were able to discuss and compare so many things about life in general and also learn about the history of Bilbao and its surrounding area.
So, if you are intending to visit Bilbao, I urge you to take the opportunity of experiencing the hospitality shown by the Greeters. You certainly will not be disappointed.
