Hotel Ercilla Lopez de Haro
Ranked #23 of 42 Hotels in Bilbao
Reviewed October 1, 2011

There are two Hotel Ercillas in Bilbao both belong to the same chain but If you ask directions for Hotel Ercilla everyone will point you towards the modern one which sits in the opposite direction from the other older one. You have to ask for "Hotel Lopez de Harold" instead. It's a far cry from it's modern sister. The location is okay - a bit hidden and hard to find. The rooms could use some improvements but overall not bad - largest safe in a room, free minibar drinks and snacks, and a very helpful staff make this hotel. There are several grocery and fruit stores nearby if you don't want to pay the 12€ breakfast. There is also a nice gym (there's not much to do in Bilbao besides the Guggenheim) down the street. Next time I will stay in San Sebastian and take a day trip to Bilbao. Hotel charges an outrageous 15€ a day for wifi and has a free computer with Internet access in the lobby.

Room Tip: Stay in San Sebastian and take a bus to Bilbao

This hotel is perfectly located for culture, shopping, siteseeing, night life and dining. The staff - mainly the reception staff - is very friendly and are always available to help. On the downside, the room had several problems: the carpet was stained as one of the couches, the window handle was broken, you had to fight with the cistern to make it stop dripping, the fridge had always some water on the bottom. One of the nights, the bed sheet had a hole. Wi-fi costs 9 eur per hour and 15 eur per day. It is not a SLH Standard Hotel, for sure!

Room Tip: The rooms at the back seem to be the worst

A very well located hotel, within easy walking distance of the downtown, the old town and the Guggenheim museum, all just minutes away.
The room was tired and needed freshen up,the beds were comfortable with a nice big bathroom.
On the downside, the safe didn't work, the cistern continuously dripped and one of the lights flickered continuously -- not really good enough for " one of the leading small hotels of the world"
while on that subject no free wifi is pretty poor for a hotel that claims to be in that group.
On the plus side the restuarant offer of the "plate of the day" was exceptional, high quality food
at a very affordable price

Room Tip: Surely there must be some returned rooms in this hotel, and if there were then our opinion would go u...

We stayed last week at this hotel for two nights. The reception staff were efficient, the hotel just the right size so as not to be impersonal and though the room was smallish, the bathroom was well equipped. Well located for the Guggenheim, old town and the excellent public transport, we also followed a recommendation from a restaurant reviewer here and took lunch at the lounge restaurant. Excellent!

We were very pleased with our hotel choice in Bilbao. The booking was well handled by an excellent English-speaking receptionist, who checked us in very professionally 2 days later. The junior suite - really a suite, and good value at 175 Euros, in the centre of the city - was well-appointed, and the included breakfasts were tasty and more than adequate for a day's sight-seeing. The staff's suggestions and directions - particularly for the amazing nearby Guggenheim museum, were first-rate. Our only big gripe was paying for in-room wifi. Overall we found the Lopez de Haro to be excellent value, and we can thoroughly recommend it.

Room Tip: Ask for a room upgrade or included breakfast

Bilbao is a surprisingly big town and this hotel is located in just the right place for all the sights. The Guggenheim Museum is a pleasant stroll and the old district is close by with a wealth of tapas bars and restaurants. The hotel is smart and the room was large, clean and well decorated. There is an underground car park with valet parking (although I discovered after we left that the valet had scraped our car alongside something).
Breakfast was a good choice of international and local food.
