We drove into Spain from Biarritz on a day trip and wanted to visit the world famous Guggenheim Museum. We found it and an underground car park quite easily. It was a hot sunny day and the area was not busy at all. Next to the museum was a tourist office where we were given a map of the city and nearby was the bus stop for the City Sightseeing Bus Tour.
We entered the Guggenheim with expectation of wonderful things as the exterior was stunning.
However, like many people, we were disappointed. The rooms were huge with few exhibits in each resulting in a very tiring visit to see less than one expected. A few exhibits were interesting and enjoyable but the vast majority were either insignificant, pointless or simply boring.
From inside the building, one could access a few exhibits on the outside - a colourful display of large spoons, some silver balloons, a huge spider etc with the river in the background. These were all interesting but I would rather have visited the Fine Arts Museum in Bilbao had I known what this was like. The Guggenheim has a little café with a small menu and a bookshop but both were not well patronised. Once outside, we took the Bus Tour and thoroughly enjoyed seeing what the rest of Bilbao offers. We saw magnificent buildings and would have loved to spend longer seeing other more worthwhile things but we had to get back to France via a stopover in San Sebastien
