In Bilboa after a 4 week road tour around Spain and Portugal, before a ferry back to UK. we wanted a nice special meal.
We went for a walk around the Old Town area. (Casa. Vieja) and had a couple of beers, before walking into the Plaza Nueva. ( the trendy bit of The Old Town). This area has lots of bars and restaurants, and looks like it would normally be very busy, but at the end of Nov on a Monday evening, it was quite quiet. One of the few decent looking places was the Restaurant Victor Montes. Really good choice !
It was very buzzy: It was a combination of a good tapas bar and a formal restaurant. When the waiters discover that you want a meal, rather than a snack, the service really steps up a gear. We originally wanted the Lamb Trotters (is Lamb Shank in UK) but they had none, so we chose sirloin steaks. Again, a good choice: some of the best steaks we have had,. Had a bottle of 2007 Rioja with it, and then had desserts. (Goats yoghurt with honey, poached pears in red wine). A really nice meal, well presented with good service. Not cheap, but it was the last night of our holiday. Prices were on a par with what one would pay for this in UK, but quality and service was better.
