Quinta Douro has one major (dis)advantage: it is not easy to find. You will need your GPS to arrive where it is located on the edge of Gijon, but having arrived and entered the park-like surroundings in which it is located, you will be thrown back a hundred years in to the summer residence of an Asturian Steel mogul. the house has been adapted to make in a comfortable hotel, but it still feels like a family home, adorned as it is by family portraits and the original furniture. The grounds are beautifully maintained and the reception by the owner, a member of the original family and who lived there as a child, is charming.
Although there is no restaurant, the breakfast is excellent, and there are restaurants of different styles not far away. The nearest, a tradtional "sidreria" provided us with a good meal in their garden, under the apple trees.More
